I love this movie! One of my favorites! It is VERY LOOSELY based on the life of PT Barnum - the movie absolutely takes many liberties with the story. But the film itself is wonderful as it is. I watch it often, I listen to the soundtrack often. If you get the opportunity, watch the YouTube of Keala Settle (the bearded lady) singing This Is Me for the first time in a rehearsal/read through. She was terrified to sing at first but as she slowly started, the song resonated with her and magic happened! And it just happened to be filmed. It will make you cry. (happy tears) Guaranteed.

Also to answer your question - Zac Efron and Zendaya's characters were not based on real people. They were added purely for drama. It wasn't until much later after this movie ended that PT Barnum met up with Bailey and Hutchinson and became partners to create Barnum & Bailey's Circus.
