In days long past, yes there were multiple ways to make your own phone number ring. The tracing thing is kinda hard to explain. The short, not exactly precise process: Basically when a call came in, someone would have to go around and manually see which switches the call were activating. They would find out what switch was being, well, switched and it's location, which they noted. They did this process for each digit, running around the room, constantly trying to see which switch is being switched, which gave the next digit. Etc. Etc. God bless modern technology.
