The part where you didn't understand what was happening, when Forrest called in about the people using flashlights across the way - that was the Watergate Scandal, in 1972. President Nixon sent people to burgle the Democratic National Committee offices, and it ended up with him resigning from office in 1974. President Gerald Ford - who had served as Nixon's VP and became President when Nixon resigned - pardoned Nixon "For the good of the country." That's the only reason Nixon didn't end up in prison. It's the reason why every political scandal now gets the word "gate" attached to the end of it. Oliver Stone did a movie about it, with Sir Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal Lecter) playing President Nixon.

It makes me really happy that this new viewing gave you a different outlook on Jenny's character. I've seen so many people give Jenny shit and say she wasn't good enough for Forrest, but that's exactly why she couldn't be with him. She had so much trauma that she never felt that she deserved love which led her into a pattern of self destruction. It isn't until the end that she realized that Forrest is right, he does know what love is and it's she who doesn't. Goes to show how much impact your home has on a person. Like how Forrest didn't have an easy life, but unlike Jenny he always had a safe place to call home and people in his life who loved him unconditionally.
