Hollywood Ghost Stories continues as we get into the mind-warping, brain melting, sanity blasting story of Donald Defreeze and the kidnapping of Patty Hearst. From bank jobs to CHAOS agents, the Phoenix Program to revolutionary fervor, MKUltra to the LAPD, this story has it all, and is easily one of the most incredible we've ever discussed.

Oh wow. I just realized that the day before this episode came out, the History Conspiracy pod released the 1974 Lake Headley and Donald Freed press conference. Cool coincidence.

It's the History Conspiracy podcast (link: https://podcastaddict.com/podcast/2916197). The episode I was referring to is here: https://podcastaddict.com/episode/133075762. The podcast is essentially various tv or audio broadcasts in audio form. Sometimes they upload entire old documentaries and I think even some congressional hearings.

Mind-bending episode (not just the podcast episode but the historical one). I was quite young at the time, but I have vivid memories of the whole Patty Hearst kidnapping drama, which was given wall-to-wall news coverage. Nebbishy loser Steven Weed was interviewed regularly. And I remember the gun battle/arson footage particularly acutely. (Coverage of the Waco seige/inferno brought it straight back.) The entire thing was utterly bizarre and seemed altogether 'off' even to my 10-year-old mind. It definitely cemented the idea, seeded by Altamont and the Manson killings, that everything about the 60s - cultural, political, and pharmacological - had descended into horrific putrescence. Which may well have been the point of the whole exercise.
