Interview : Fraka (photographer) (Patreon)

On poursuit cette petite série d'interviews avec un autre membre du Patreon qui traîne avec nous sur le chat Telegram officiel (pour y accéder, le lien est toujours sur by.paingout.com). Son nom est Fraka, et ses photos sont particulièrement belles !

- Paingout :
Hello Fraka ! On t’a découvert sur le Telegram de byPaingout avec quelques très belles photos que tu y as posté, tu peux nous en dire un peu plus sur toi ? Qui es-tu donc ?

- Fraka :
Donc moi c'est Fraka, Alexandre de mon vrai prénom. Le pseudo n'a aucun sens et aucune origine. Juste, quand j'étais ado, je trouvais que ça sonnait bien. Je suis plus ado. Mais j'y suis habitué. Aujourd'hui j'ai 36 ans et je suis photographe indépendant depuis 3/4 ans environ. J'arrive plus ou moins à en vivre et j'enseigne aussi la photographie à des jeunes adultes en complément dans une formation de mode.
Je vis à Lille. J'ai un peu bougé. J'ai fait l'école des beaux arts de Valenciennes. Après j'ai bossé un peu dans le domaine de l'art numérique et du spectacle vivant, notamment au théâtre Paris Villette dans le cadre d'une scène qui interrogeait les rapports entre numérique et spectacle vivant (c'était il y a 15 ans et on faisait des mises en scène via Skype déjà).
Ensuite j'ai été un peu sur Bruxelles, un peu dans les Alpes. Et je suis revenu dans le nord où j'ai bossé pendant 8 ans à la Fnac comme vendeur photo. Au bout de 8 ans je ne trouvais plus du tout ma place dans l'enseigne alors j'ai décidé de me barrer et d'essayer de devenir photographe.

- Paingout :
C’est avec les photos de nus qu’on t’a découvert sur le groupe, tu en as fait beaucoup ?

- Fraka :
Pas assez. En fait j'ai fait un peu de lingerie/boudoir et de nu quand j'ai commencé à faire de la photo, et pendant quelques années. Et au fur et à mesure j'ai eu comme un blocage. Je ne savais pas trop ce que je voulais raconter de cette façon là. Je ne voulais pas faire du nu juste pour le nu. Je voyais plein de vieux gars qui avaient juste un truc très voyeuriste qui ne me plaisait pas. Genre une fois j'ai eu un client qui mna demandé, je le cite : un appareil pour faire des photos de chaudasse genre grosse chienne en chaleur. Bon...
J'ai quand même continué à en faire un peu avec de rares copines. Et aussi parfois avec des modèles masculins.
Et aujourd'hui j'aimerais bien en refaire un peu plus et de façon un peu plus décomplexée. Mais je crois que c'est surtout que je commence à avoir un peu moins le syndrome de l'imposteur. Enfin je crois que ça joue.

- Paingout :
Comment tu trouvais tes modèles à l’époque du coup ? Ça n’était que des copines à toi ?

- Fraka :
C'était toujours des copines ou des copines de copines.

- Paingout :
Je connais ça !
Qu’est ce qui te plaisait dans la photo de nu ?

- Fraka :
Ce qui me plaisait et me plaît toujours d'ailleurs c'est de chercher l'image qui va rendre joli-e. Le bon cadrage, la lumière, la courbe, etc. Depuis quelques temps j'ai appris à gérer les flashs aussi et ça me permet de complètement travailler différemment (j'aime aussi toujours la lumière naturelle). J'aime bien voir la photo un peu comme une énigme. T'as tous les outils, la modèle, ton boîtier, des optiques, des réglages, etc. Et y a des combinaisons qui fonctionnent, d'autres pas. Et c'est un équilibre assez fragile en fait. Mais si tout s'aligne ... Ensuite il y a aussi le côté intime. Le fait de partager un moment vraiment particulier, la confiance aussi. C'est assez précieux en fait. Chaque fois ce sont des moments uniques et de partage. On construit un truc vraiment ensemble. Je trouve ça chouette.

- Paingout :
Et du coup ce qui t’a fait arrêter c’est de pas trop te sentir légitime ou un truc du genre ?

- Fraka :
Oui, il y a de ça. J'avais du mal à voir ce que je pouvais apporter au genre. Je voyais des choses très chouettes mais d'abord je n'avais pas envie d'être dans la copie et ensuite je n'arrivais pas à trouver ce vers quoi j'avais envie d'aller.
Et non, effectivement, je ne me sentais pas légitime à apporter ce regard là.

- Paingout :
Je me suis souvent posé ce genre de question, puis au final je m’en fous un peu. Ca vaut le coup de faire les photos juste pour passer un moment intéressant et créer un truc à soit je trouve. En tous cas les quelques photos que j’ai pu voir de toi étaient vraiment belles en tout point !

- Fraka :
Merci beaucoup pour le compliment.
J'avoue qu'aujourd'hui j'ai effectivement envie d'en refaire aussi un peu plus avec ce côté "et puis merde, pourquoi pas ?"
Après j'ai aussi pas mal progressé techniquement et à côté de certains trucs que je vois, je me dis que bon, ça va, je suis pas déconnant.

- Paingout :
Tu utilises quoi comme matériel ?

- Fraka :
En tant que photographe pro, j'ai un peu de tout. Je bosse essentiellement sur un nikon z6 aujourd'hui mais j'ai eu pas mal de reflex Nikon. J'ai des optiques très quali, très propres, efficaces mais je crois qu'un des trucs que je préfère ce sont des objectifs un peu cheap ou vintage. Dans le genre j'ai un 35mm 7artisans. Le truc m'a coûté 100 balles, il est bourré de défauts, il a un méga vignettage mais d'abord il est tout petit et en plus les photos qu'il délivre ont du caractère. C'est celui que j'ai toujours sur le boîtier quand je me balade ou que je shoote juste pour le plaisir.

Et j'ai aussi quelques objectifs vintage. Du genre helios, etc. Des objectifs d'URSS qui ont un look vraiment particulier. C'est assez marrant à utiliser.

- Paingout :
Ah ouais tu rigoles pas.
C’est quoi les autres photos que tu aimes faire en dehors du nu ?

- Fraka :
Je ne sais pas si c'est mon goût pour Araki mais je fais énormément de photos de fleurs. Et j'ai une super fleuriste.

- Paingout :
Ah oui j’ai eu une grosse phase d’amour pour Araki aussi mais ça m’est passé :p

- Paingout:
Hello Fraka! We discovered you on the Telegram of byPaingout with some very beautiful photos that you posted, can you tell us a little more about you? Who are you?

- Fraka :
So I'm Fraka, my real name is Alexandre. The nickname has no meaning and no origin. Just, when I was a teenager, I thought it sounded good. I'm not a teenager anymore. But I'm used to it. Today I'm 36 and I've been a freelance photographer for about 3/4 years. I manage to make a living from it more or less and I also teach photography to young adults as a complement to a fashion course.
I live in Lille. I moved around a bit. I went to the school of fine arts in Valenciennes. Then I worked a little in the field of digital art and live performance, especially at the Paris Villette theater in the context of a scene that questioned the relationship between digital and live performance (it was 15 years ago and we were already staging via Skype).
Then I was in Brussels for a while, and in the Alps for a while. And I came back to the north where I worked for 8 years at the Fnac as a photo salesman. After 8 years I couldn't find my place at all in the store so I decided to leave and try to become a photographer.

- Paingout:
It's with the nude photos that you were discovered on the band, did you do a lot of them?

- Fraka:
Not enough. Actually I did a little bit of lingerie/boudoir and nude when I first started doing photography, and for a few years. And as I went along I kind of got stuck. I didn't really know what I wanted to tell in that way. I didn't want to do nudes just for nudes. I saw a lot of old guys who just had a very voyeuristic thing going on that I didn't like. Like one time I had a client who asked me for, and I quote: a camera to take pictures of a hot bitch in heat. Well...
I still continued to do a little bit with some rare girlfriends. And also sometimes with male models.
And today I would like to do a little more and in a more relaxed way. But I think it's mostly that I'm starting to have a little less imposter syndrome. At least I think that's part of it.

- Paingout:
How did you find your models at the time ? Were they just your girlfriends?

- Fraka:
They were always girlfriends or girlfriends of girlfriends.

- Paingout:
I know that!
What did you like about nude photography?

- Fraka :
What I liked and still like is to look for the image that will make you look pretty. The right framing, the light, the curve, etc. For some time I have learned to manage flashes too and it allows me to work completely differently (I also still like natural light). I like to see photography as a bit of a puzzle. You have all the tools, the model, your camera, lenses, settings, etc. And there are combinations that work, and that are not always the same. And there are combinations that work, others that don't. And it's a pretty delicate balance. And it's a pretty delicate balance actually. But if everything lines up... Then there is also the intimate side. The fact of sharing a really special moment, the trust too. It's quite precious in fact. Each time it's a unique moment of sharing. We really build something together. I think that's great.

- Paingout:
And what made you stop was not feeling legitimate or something like that?

- Fraka:
Yes, there is that. I had a hard time seeing what I could bring to the genre. I saw some very nice things but first I didn't want to be in the copy and then I couldn't find what I wanted to go towards
And no, in fact, I didn't feel legitimate to bring that look.

- Paingout:
I have often asked myself this kind of question, but in the end I don't care. It's worth doing the photos just to have an interesting time and create something of your own I think. Anyway the few pictures I could see of you were really beautiful in every way!

- Fraka:

I admit that today I actually want to do a little more with this "what the hell, why not?" side.
After I also progressed quite a bit technically and next to some stuff I see, I tell myself that well, it's okay, I'm not messing around.

- Paingout:
What kind of gear do you use?

- Fraka:
As a pro photographer, I have a little bit of everything. I mainly work on a Nikon z6 today but I've had a lot of Nikon SLRs. I have very good, clean, efficient lenses but I think one of my favorite things are the cheap or vintage lenses. I have a 35mm 7artisans. The thing cost me 100 bucks, it's full of flaws, it has a mega vignetting but first it's very small and on top of that the pictures it delivers have character. It's the one I always have on the camera when I'm walking around or shooting just for fun.
And I also have some vintage lenses. Like helios, etc. Lenses from the USSR that have a really special look. It's kind of fun to use.

- Paingout:
Oh yeah you're not kidding.
What are the other pictures you like to do besides nude ?

- Fraka:
I don't know if it's my taste for Araki but I do a lot of flower pictures. And I have a great florist.

- Paingout:
Oh yes I had a big love phase for Araki too but I got over it :p
