Once or twice might have been excusable, but by the forth violent outburst from an LGBT character I was starting to lose my patience.

Poor LGBTQIA+ representation kept me from enjoying one of Netflix's sweetest anime

When it comes to shows that premiered in 2019, probably the show which most immediately felt like exactly my jam was a Netflix anime called Carole & Tuesday. The premise behind Carole & Tuesday is simple and sweet.

Faith and Valor have a good month creators. Love all that you do.

Carol and Tuesday Note I appreciate your article. You acknowledge the beauty in the show but don't shy away from where it utterly fails and is seemingly insulting. During the Cybelle episode and Dalhia’s past I remember being confused watching the Sub because it was never clear what their identity was suppose to be but not in an intentional to the story way. Rather it hurt the story because I sat there unsure what they were trying to say. I didn't pick up on the violence being associated with the queer characters until you pointed it out but it is there. I guess I was just glad the Mermaid Sisters were standing up for themselves even if inappropriately rather just be bullied but you're right this is a problem of the show as a whole and I can see it now. One small spoiler about Desmond since this is where you stopped watching he does not die in that scene. I think the idea was for him to have just gone back to sleep. I can confirm this because he comes back at the end for the big finish. Still I can understand your frustration and wanting to stop at this point. I can't help but wonder what fell apart here? I love Shin'ichirô Watanabe’s other work but thinking back I remember times in his other shows where a trans or homosexual character was just there for a punchline. Like C&T it’s always awkward and detracting from otherwise amazing story, animation, and music. I can’t help feel it’s different in C&T though because it almost seems like it was trying not to be offensive. Almost like a creator who may have been flippant in the past was trying to acknowledge it and course correct their story telling. I admit now that it did not succeed but I have to wonder what happened. Is Wantanabe just too ignorant and inexperienced with the subject mater he was trying to approach that he botched it all? Maybe I’m choosing to be ignorant but I don’t want to believe this was intended to be offensive. Also with the very conflicting Dub and Sub versions I wonder how much the studios got in the way of his original text. It wouldn’t be the first time in anime. It makes me think of where Japan is at socially in addressing LGBTQIA+ issues and how behind they may be. Not that my homeland in the USA is really progressive but I wonder if Japan is even worse. I definitely get that feeling from watching other anime that things feel backwards. Still we’re talking about one medium written almost exclusively by heterosexual males (most of them obviously horny to get their fetish on screen). It’s not fair to assume that’s an entire cultures mindset as a whole. If people looked at American Reality TV as a source for how we all think… dammit. To close my thoughts I wanted to thank you for this article. You brought to my attention some issues I would never have considered previously. In the future I’m going to be more careful about recommending C&T. While as you said it is wonderful at so many things I need to consider the audience I’m recommending to watch it and at least prep them with a “Hey it’s great but they get some stuff real wrong at parts.” Thanks!

That sounds so disappointing. I appreciate the heads up and fantastically written opinion piece. 🙂
