We totally have been on the far side of the moon, it’s not any colder than the near side, because it gets just as much sun (when the moon is new, the sun’s all on the back). We have always landed on the near side in order to maintain communication, but we’ve orbited around the back numerous times, and last year the Chinese Chang’e 4 spacecraft landed on the far side. I don’t know why this bothered me so much in a discussion about moon juice, but there it is.
