While a simple coming out story shouldn't be a surprise, how tactfully it is handled in Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts is still a pleasantly noteworthy occurrence.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts makes coming out as gay simple and direct

Over the past couple of years, DreamWorks has been putting out thoughtful and ambitious new children's animation, raising the bar for shows that challenge younger audiences with more complex narratives. The studio's 2016 reboot of Voltron and 2018 reboot of She-Ra both took initially simplistic premises designed mostly to sell toys and developed them out into emotionally engaging narratives that captured audiences with their characters' depth of motivations.

Time to binge watch this show. Hadn't heard of it before today so thank you Laura. 😃

I was so stoked with two things about this. Three, because someone else noticed it. But it was firstly the casual and uncomplicated way Benson told Kipo he was gay. And two, the absolutely mundane way - mundane in the sense of ordinary, everyday - in which Kipo accepted it. I love the normalcy of it all. I loved the way that no one felt the need to explain everything, and the way it was just seamlessly integrated into the world. And I loved everything about Kipo, but this was one of the things that stuck in my mind, for all the right reasons.
