While I love the fact that one of my favourite gaming protagonists might be trans, I really wish it wasn't so easily deniable.

Celeste's creator's silence on their trans protagonist isn't great representation

One of my favorite video games of the last couple of years, as well as probably the most critically acclaimed indie game released in 2018, was a tough platformer called Celeste. The game tells the story of Madeline, a young woman with anxiety and depression, climbing a difficult and dangerous mountain.

I didn't know the devs were staying quiet about this. That is disappointing. As you say, representation matters and the devs' silence allows for an interpretation that the flags were more a gesture of lip service rather than actual representation. I believe Madeline is trans.

I admit I sometimes get a *little* annoyed when I see obvious stretches to interpret characters as trans or gay or what have you, but I understand people do it because there’s so little clear, purposeful representation. And while in this case the “clues” are pretty fucking blatant, I agree the devs need to make some kind of statement. Because if after all this they’re afraid of upsetting whatever portion of their player base that doesn’t want Madeline to be trans, then fuck them. Grow a god damn spine.
