Let's Stop Half Arsing "Blank Slate" Protagonists

Link in the Legend of Zelda games is never the most interesting character in his own adventures. He's a shell, usually given a generic, world-ending motivation to go off on adventures, and the motives of those around him are usually much more fleshed out.

I think there's a place in the world for the Half-Slate Protagonists, but I totally agree it makes no sense to defend their weak points either. For me, that middle ground exists under the assumption we all wish we were good little boys. We hand-wave away the part where controlling a character means you can be genocidal Fallout maniac, in order to say "In this game, you're a good boy. Play a good boy story." There's merit to that, and when done well it can feel like a soft pat on the back to commend you for being such a smart and good and interesting good boy. It's the video game equivalent of a Mary Sue. It's not deep and intellectual in that respect; it's comfort food. However, there's rarely a good reason not to offer a gender swap. C'mon already.
