The Firing Episode: That Time I Got Fired, A Sysadmin's Life, If You Lose Jason You Lose Us, A Steaming Cup of Coffee, The Unnamed Worst Customer Ever, Goodbye, Hello Internet Archive.

An episode about the only time I've been fired so far! Not bad for roughly 20 years of working life. I am pretty sure I got most of the details right, but you never know. I say this compared to most of the talking about history I do because it seems to be that when a person describes an emotionally traumatic event, they tend to get details real weird - it must be how the brain copes.

One point of order for the people who might bring it up: I say Sony Psygnosis ended, and got immediately hired, but I don't count that as fired? Well, my reason is that when the word came down they were closing, Mark Tsai took over the Psygnosis offices and started Focus Studios, so absolutely nothing changed.

This episode really hit home for me. I'm in my late 30s, a burned out sysadmin, and my dream employer of 7 years was just acquired by a huge east coast company and drained all the fun out of it. Only difference is I don't feel like I have the cultural clout and firm knowledge of what I want to do that you did when you got fired from Savvis. I don't get invited to give speeches after which I can demand a job doing what I want to the benefit of both parties. I'm just some guy.

Well, to some extent I felt like I was some guy as well. Also bear in mind I contacted people/friends at Etsy, a couple museums in NYC, Kickstarter, and so on about proposing some sort of "Jason is Jason" work, like documentary making on a retainer or similar. They didn't work out, ultimately. So there's a missing piece there - I didn't just turn 90 degrees and clap my hands twice. I should also say I went from owning a house and living with a wife and three cats to renting from my brother in a single room (with shipping container out back), so my costs went way down while I was trying to making this all happen. Depending on who depends on you (family? partner? children?) you might find a radical change would be a great benefit. Some people throw everything they have into storage (that they don't throw out) and live somewhere else for a while, get a new perspective.
