Henlo guys!!

On this post, I'm gonna share with you besties how I make my Augmented Reality versions of my paintings!

For beginner besties, Augmented Reality is used to... augment your reality hehe and you do that by putting digital elements to real world environment!

I have a highlight of it on my instagram if you want to see videos but it looks like this:

NOTE: The app I use here, Adobe Aero, works fully on apple products. I think they only have beta versions for limited Android devices at the moment.

INGREDIENTS haha:

  • Adobe Aero App (free)
  • Nomad Sculpt app (I think it's $15.99?)
  • iPhone
  • iPad Pro 12.9
  • Chargers. This app sucks the life out of my phone FAST
  • Gaviscon Extra Strength Antacid
  • Kinder Bueno Chocolate Bars

1. MAKE YOUR ELEMENTS (0:04)

You could put images (jpgs/pngs)  gifs, 3d models and even add audio to your AR!

For IMAGES: (0:04)

  • Don't forget to turn off your background!
  • It's just like your saving your paintings. Export as jpg/png.

For GIFS: (0:16)

  • Make an animation using Procreate's animation feature! Make sure the file isn't too big, make your canvas a bit smaller.
  • Export as ANIMATED GIF.

For 3D MODELS: (1:02)

  • I don't know much about 3d modeling yet, but I use NOMAD APP, interface is not as overwhelming as bigger programs like Blender. I also like that I can do it directly on the iPad. I've also tried Blender for this, just lots of work for me hehe

EXPORT YOUR 3D MODEL TO PROCREATE: (1:24)

3rd icon on top left corner.

Rightmost icon.

Tap DECIMATE.

Tap UNWRAP ATLAS.

1st icon on top left corner.

Export as OBJ.

Tap on the Procreate icon and it will redirect you to Procreate where you can paint your 3d model!

CONVERT OBJ FILE TO GLB: (2:50)

Ok sooo I'm not sure if I'm doing anything wrong, or maybe it will work for you guys, try saving your 3d model on Procreate as OBJ file then open it in your Adobe Aero app. The model doesn't appear in the app for me so I had to convert the OBJ file to GLB.  Here's how I do it:

After painting the model on Procreate, I'll save it as OBJ file.

Then open in the FILES app. The files are separate like this:

So I'll select all then compress into one ZIP file.

I use THIS SITE to convert it.

If you look at your downloads file again, you'll see that it's now a GLB file!

2. IMPORT ELEMENTS TO ADOBE AERO:

ADD IMAGES (4:04)

First thing you gotta do of course is download the Adobe Aero app and sign up! Having an account makes it easier to access the file on your ipad and phone simultaneously.

  • You'll see dots, just tap on any flat surface. You can anchor it horizontally or vertically.
  • Bottom left > Camera Roll > Add your image!

SHORTCUTS: (4:24)

  • One finger to move the element left or right, front or back.
  • Two fingers to rotate and scale.
  • Three fingers to move it up and down.
  • You can also adjust it on the app if you want accurate placements!

ADD GIFS: (5:29)

  • Bottom left button > File > Look for your GIF file!

When you import your GIF it will NOT be animated at first! You have to do these to make it animated: (5:47)

  • On the bottom bar, choose BEHAVIORS > TRIGGERS > SELECT WHEN YOUR ANIMATION WILL START.  I always choose START so the GIF will move right away.
  • Click ACTION > PLAY IMAGES. Make sure you have your file there. You'll also see other options like SPIN, for example, you can use that to make your element spin!
  • There are also other options like you can delay the animation, the speed, the play count, or if you want it to be looping infinitely

ADD 3D MODELS:

  • Bottom left > File > Look for the converted GLB file. Should be in your Downloads folder if you didn't move it.

I usually assemble all of this on my iPad, and since i have the app on my phone too, I can just open it on my phone!

3. SHARE YOUR AR! (7:52)

Upper right icon > EXPORT > SHARE A LINK > CREATE LINK

You can get the link or generate your QR Code! You can then save the QR code, i usually edit it first on procreate to make it smaller and add instructions for the peeps.

8:18 timestamp on video is where you'll see how to access the AR through the printed QR code! Make sure the fren you're gonna give this to has Adobe Aero app installed in their phone. No need to sign up!

Anddd that's it! I'll make another post about another alternative app! Hope you guys will try this too! AR is such a super cool medium and I can't wait to see your creations! Please tag me if you ever try!

Thank you!!! Got a VR headset recently but have used Blender almost exclusively for all my 3D stuff, might tip my work over to see how it could work on a phone! Always great to get insight on other processes!! Thank u! ☺️

nic!!

i've always wondered how you did that!! thanks ^_^
