Hi besties i'm backkkkkk!! Anotha one anotha one about poses!

This time.. instead of blocking in colors right away.. I'm gonna show you how I sometimes sketch..... or use line lines... perspective.. and all thattt

Important note! This is NOT an anatomy posttt, I could do that if you guys want, like we can do the anatomies of each body part, but this post is not going to focus on the anatomy but the overall shape of the body parts!

MATERIALS:

WHY THIS TECHNIQUE? HMM??

  • ummm well.. if you don't like straight up putting colors on your canvas right away like in Part 1, thennnn you can try this sketching shapes technique first!
  • Using 3d shapes and adding curved lines around your shape will 100000% make the part easier to paint! You'll be able to figure out faster where to put the shadows and highlights better!

TIP # 1!

If the pose is very angular like this, it's easier for me not to sketch the actual body parts, i just  look for the simplest shape for each section of the pose.

For example.. the whole head looks simply like that for me lol so i'll sketch that exact shape on my canvas too. Then I can also separate the inside of the shape again to smaller shapes to identify where I need to put the face!

Like this! If you do those exact lines on your canvas, then you'll know that the triangle in the middle is where you need to put the face, you'll also know that those shapes around are for the hair

Here you can see how the shapes are super easy to identify, the overwhelming pose earlier seems to look a lot easier now with those shapessss

Example 2!!! So you basically just reduce the whole pose into super simple shapes like this, yo udon't have to worry about like the curves or anything, you can just improve each part, spend time on it.. but at least this way, you get the overall shape of the body pose!

Here's also how I know where to out the parts, I basically just use imaginary lines like that (or u can also draw actual lines) to determine which parts are the same level, which part is perpendicular or aligned with which part etc etcccc

TIP # 2!

This one you can use if you're not that familiar with like.. accurate anatomy sketches, like me lmao so what i do is just simplify the shapes of each part, thennn you need to add little helpers to make your shapes look more 3d, like the lil circles between the joints, for example.

and the curvy lines, chonky shapes make the sketch more.... like a human sketch, not just flat body!!!

Curved lines inside the shapes gives it a form!!

See how the right sketch is more... human like with the curves, and the mesh makes the shapes appear more 3d-ishhh

So i know u besties studying art know more about this, but the curved lines inside the shapes are called Cross Contour and it helps give the shape form and volume!

I found this cross contour technique super helpful for me to see the 3d forms of the shapes (since head empty lmao)

TLDR:

  • Reduce the whole pose to simpler shapes
  • Use Curves! Chunks of shapes!
  • Practice putting cross contour to your shapes to give your flat shapes form and volume. It'll also make painting that part easier and better, since the lines will give you an idea which side touches the light and which side should be the shadow area

So that's ittttt! I'll post more this week besties!!! Part 3 and then the conclusion! And thennnn umm more color palettes anddd umm art vs reference!! Yay!
