Henlo frens!

Here’s a very long post on how I make a Procreate brush, specifically the Oil Paint Brush!! I really like making my digital paintings look like traditional so I’ve always been experimenting with brushes and textures. Here’s an example of a traditional painting look I’ve done!!

The brushes I used here can be found under the brush tag!!! U can download and edit that!!! But if you want to explore more and make your own brush, here‘s a lil beginner frenly step by step!

So now let me show you a super easy way to make an oil brush!!

First of all, I don’t actually make it from scratch.. ha! Clickbait!! Procreate already has a wide selection of brushes, so it’s a whole lot easier to tweak those brushes! Starting from a blank brush is super overwhelming!!

On the left side of the brush studio, yo can see all the brush settings! It’s a lot! But we’ll only change some settings to achieve the oil brush look!

Here are the settings where I change some stuff! I don’t really bother with the taper, color dynamics and dynamics! Too complicated! The most important part here is the SHAPE AND GRAIN!

If you’re gonna follow this and make your own too, I suggest using KUNANYI brush, one of my faves, because it already has the texture and flow of a traditional paint!

1. STROKE PATH

As I’ve said, the most important is the SHAPE AND GRAIN. SHAPE is essentially a container of the grain. It’s the outline/outer shape of your brush.

A brush strokes consists of a series of these shapes! (TOP TIER GRAPHICS!)

As you can see below, if you max out the spacing, you can see the individual shape of the brush.

No space gives you a brush stroke!

Aside from the spacing, what I usually change is the STREAMLINE.

Max streamline gives you a smooth, precise line, great for calligraphy!

Min streamline makes it more natural! And wobbly! which we like for our oil paint brush!

2. SHAPE

I’m not gonna change anything on the shape setting, I’ll leave it as it is, the original kunanyi shape setting.

But! If you like to change the shape, you can always add your own photo our choose from Procreate’s source library! Lots of variety of textures to choose from!

EDIT > IMPORT > SOURCE LIBRARY

3. GRAIN

The texture on the surface of your shape! I’ll also just keep the grain source photo but I’ll change the MOVEMENT and DEPTH setting.

MOVEMENT is how the grain moves on every brush stroke. Low Movement = smoother, low texture visible

Max movement = very textured! This will look best for charcoal/pencil brushes.

I like it just the right amount, we’ll use around 24%! Not much grainy texture but you can still see like a dragging brush effect.

DEPTH setting is how strong that texture will appear on your brushstroke. The difference is very subtle, but you can still see that max depth is def better! So we’ll adjust the setting to max depth!

4. RENDERING

Rendering is how your brush strokes interact with your canvas or another brush stroke.

It’s got a couple of options but basically, the lightest, obviously, is the LIGHT GLAZE. It will appear more like a watercolor brush. The heaviest mode is the INTENSE BLENDING, this will make the brush look more like a thick paint.

I’ll choose the INTENSE BLENDING option for our brush!

5. WET MIX

Wet Mix option is also one of the most important setting you need to use when making a traditional brush

DILUTION is basically just how you add water on your paint to make it look watered down and transparent. This comes in handy if you want to make a watercolor brush!

Picture below shows no dilution, so it still appears a very heavy thick stroke.

Charge is just like how you recharge your brush with paint!! This sets how much paint you add on your brush for every new brush stroke. I don’t really bother with it a lot.

Attack sets how much paint stays on your canvas. The higher the attack is, the bolder the brush stroke will be.

Pull is the most important setting under wet mix when making this brush! Pull is how the brush stroke will drag another crush stroke color on your canvas, making it look like the paint colors are mixing together!

Here’s the WET MIX setting for the brush. 42% Dilution, 32% attack, 50% pull. The rest is 0.

Here you can see the difference when you use the Pull setting:

If you add another color:

You’ll see that the blue kinda drags the orange outwards, which makes it look like a wet-on-wet traditional paint!

That’s basically it but if you ever want to change the size of the brush..

6. PROPERTIES

You can adjust it under the properties setting! Max out the max size!!

So here’s the final result! The orange stroke is the original KUNANYI and the strokes below is the new oil brush!! Looks more flowy and oilyyyy!

Here’s how it flows on top of a canvas

You can just adjust the blend mode to make it look more traditional like!

Again! go to the brushes tag to download my brushes! If you had problems downloading it using the app, try downloading it using ur browser! I made an exclusive patreon highlight on my Instagram, u can see how to download the brushes via browser there!!

These brushes looks very traditional, you can edit these too! Do whatever you want with it!! Hope you guys like it!!!

Hi, sadly I can‘t see the link for this set! Would you mind sending it to me?

artcyll

Hi bestieee! All the links should work if you use the browser instead of the patreon app! Let me know if it works!

Un Nico

Also how do I adjust the blend mode to make it look like that? Where it says "You can just adjust the blend mode to make it look more traditional like!" Thanks in advance!

artcyll

Click your layer, you’ll see all the blend modes right away (multiply, darken, color burn, linear burn, etc) and just change your blend mode into the blend mode you think is best for your painting!
