In two weeks Germany had reached the city of Lwów, but their army couldn't yet capture the city centre. 17th day the Red Army crossed almost undefended eastern border, and quickly reached the city where they had their first significant engagement. German forces left the city for the Soviets, and the Polish defenders surrendered after a few more days of fighting. Despite the conditions of surrender, most of the officers would be imprisoned and later executed. The capture of Lwów meant that the Polish worst-case-scenario defensive plan failed, and Poland's defeat became inevitable.

I recall reading somewhere that part of the reason why the soviets were allowed to progress so far into the city was because the polish thought they were there to help initially. Couldn't say if it's true, its been a long time

The Soviets executed over 20,000 Poles in the Katyn Massacre. Dumped all the bodies into a mass grave.
