Proto-Katy and Wubhamer (Patreon)

Way before Sublo, and before I moved to LA, I was developing various animation projects. This would have probably been 2012-13. An early version of Katy appeared in one of them, as part of a gang in a post-apocalyptic world. The guy next to her was the group's mentor figure, but also basically just Cabbie from Escape from New York as a schoolbus driver. I'm so glad I didn't actually try to make this cartoon, it would have been pretty bad. A lot of those early projects, and even the earliest Sublo stuff, didn't have much clarity of tone-- I wanted to just throw a bunch of random ideas together. I think Fester Fish worked well because it was a tongue-in-cheek pastiche of old cartoons, but anything more earnest like this would have been extremely awkward. I also just didn't have the drawing ability to execute it.

Dick Wubhamer also came from an abandoned project around that time, where he was a gangster terrorizing some little kids and chasing them around a city at night. Pretty much the same character as in Sublo, but more menacing and he smoked all the time. I still like to bring back the purple suit for stories where he has to dress fancy.

These will appear in the Sublo season 1 artbook thing too. I also have some rough animation tests from those projects to post.
