Hi know I’m a bit late but I think it’s interesting that Keith Urban does backing vocals on We Were Happy, because i always thought these songs were connected. Because to me that song is her realizing she doesn’t love him anymore and has to break up with him even though she doesn’t want to. So to me it would fit perfectly between her leaving and coming back in this song. Realizing she was wrong.

I am sooo late but i just think "laughing when im crying" could have many meanings, and the first time it's used i thought of it as meaning that even when they're actually having this conversation about needing space, and it's really sad and they're crying, but they're still laughing. Like the first chorus of this song I can see as being a very literal back-and-forth dialogue and they've just had this sad convo about "I need time" and "I know" and she says "when can i come back?" and he makes some joke about "oh when i wake up in the morning!" or however it goes, but even in this sad conversation there's so much love and safety between them that they're literally laughing when they're crying
