I've seen a lot of people comment about how Chappel's red carpet outift/performance theme gives Joan of Arc, which makes sense, but I read this AMAZING YouTube comment interpreting her Good Luck Babe performance as being a reference to Julie d'Aubigny, a woman who is known for many things, but amongst them, being a skilled swordswoman who won many fights against men, and burning down a covenant in order to escape with a female lover. This is represented by her sword and cross on her red carpet outfit, her being the only victor amongst the men at the end of her performance, and the "castle"--which is actually perhaps a convent/nunnery--being burnt down, with the flames being shaped as crucifixes/crosses on the fence. I'm absolutely obsessed with this interpretation and think it brings such a fun, historical element to the character she embodies for this performance.

So in regards to Taylor just like, not really being there for most of the show--it seems as though she might have disappeared because the VMA's decided to place a camera directly in front of her seat to have a constant stream of just her, probably because they know how many people love to get a glimpse of her dancing and reacting during awards shows. However, I don't think they considered that having a camera trained on you for an entire awards show, knowing for 100% certainty that EVERY thing you do will be seen and commented on rather than it just being a luck of the draw sort of thing, is extremely stressful and tiring. Especially when you've already been in the direct spotlight nonstop for over 2 years straight. I don't blame her at all for stepping away and trying to enjoy the show in a more private and secluded way. Everything Chappel Roan has been saying and doing in regards to her own boundaries should really be comprehended and applied to all celebrities, including Taylor. People really do need to remember that we are not owed constant access to her, and even at a public event like this, she shouldn't be expected to be "on" for a livestream audience the entire time.

Yes!! I saw a YouTube short from a historian and a comment about this too. The Julie d’Aubigny reference and burning down the convent seems fairly likely to me and brilliant if true. I do think she was a bit nervous in this performance— I think she kind of indicated this on the red carpet and I can’t blame her for it because she truly did grow so rapidly and this is a massive shift for her. I think her performance was great though, even if she seemed a little nervous

Hot take 🔥 I actually love that chappell only did one song and I loved her performance so much its one of my favs 😍 Chappell roan actually has some deep meaning behind her performance and choosing to only sing good luck babe. Since good luck babe is about queer people dealing with people who arent coming out due to compulsive heteronormativity. I think her knight theme is referencing Julie D'Aubigney who is a historical queer woman opera singer who could swordfight. She often went to balls dressed in a suit and one of those times she's talking to a woman that 3 men have tried and failed to get her attention so the 3 men and Julie fight in a duel, she defeats them without killing them due to her badass fencing skills. Then these 2 start seeing each other and they eventually get caught by Julie's parents who ship Julie's lover to a nunnery once they find out. Julie takes matters into her own hands by going in disguise to this nunnery and rescues her lover then burns the whole nunnery down. Hey ladies, I was waiting for you to post this!! I'm so happy for Taylor. They only aired 2 awards, but she took home so many! I personally love both her outfits. The yellow plaid was unexpected, but the corset and skirt/short was very TTPD to me, and I loved, loved,loved her hair down with a slight curl. The cute little babydoll dress with the alien design, was clearly giving down bad, and I'm wondering if she's hinting at a third single/MV from TTPD. The little side flair at the hip was to die for. As for her ghosting most of the show... you know they had a camera dedicated to her. They called it the Taylor's Version camera or some sh*t. It's one thing to be at an awards show knowing the cameras are panning around and you might get caught reacting to something. It's another to have a camera literally at your feet, pointing at you the whole time. Way to ruin the show for her. Of course she got up and left. The same woman who can do an entire outfit change in 45 seconds on tour does not need 45 minutes to get changed at an awards show. And she was gone for over 2 hours in order "to get a drink". No, she was gone for so long because they made her uncomfortable with the unwarranted attention.

I would just say that the VMAs aren't really an indication of how Grammy's will go since VMAs are fan voted. Also I saw some theories that Taylor wasn't out in the crowd as much during the newer artists (like Sabrina & Chappell) in order to not take the moment from them. IDK if that's true but I like the thought of that since it does become all about her. Also the VMAs had like a whole separate stream that was just the camera on Taylor the whole night. I didn't watch it but that could've also caused her to go hide out for a little. IDK if that would be something she would have to consent to or not but it feels a little intrusive.

👋🏼 hey ladies, just a couple things re: the endorsement (I know for non-Americans it’s been a bit of a lot this last week which I totally get). 1) it’s pronounced Kama-la, (literally “,-la”); just don’t want your pronunciation to get you lumped in with the crazies over here hahaha. 2) I totally understood the point you guys made on Twitter about a lot of the fans (and especially the non-fans) that were all over her about her using her voice; however, especially because of her association with Brittany, and the fact that so many of those policies on the other side are so damaging to so many marginalized communities, that many of us that wanted her to speak out were coming from a place of scared and worry. As far as Taylor being absent for 45 min, what I was reading that sounded pretty reliable, was that she learned that they had a camera on her, showing her every move during the show. And that she told tree that she is not happy about it and had to leave for a while.

I know the clowning for rep tv never ends but genuinely this outfit to me seems like a big indicator that we’re close. Personally the original outfit gives gladiator, she mentioned gladiator very randomly in here TIME interview for person of the year which is also the interview she mentioned the rep tv vault tracks being “fire”. I think she was 100% aware there was going to be a camera pointed on her all night. They did it last year and honestly those were the most viral clips from the event so she went in fully expecting it again in my opinion. I agree that most likely because of this camera is a big part of the reason she was backstage for huge chunks of the show. it was her taking control over the situation. I also think purposefully stayed backstage during Sabrina’s and Chappell’s performance so the focus was on them and not what was Taylor doing in the audience.

Please react to Halsey!!! 😍Also I think it wasn’t Chappell’s strongest performance for many reasons, which is crazy to say because she’s such an amazing performer! (I saw her live during the summer and she took my breath away 🤯) She doesn’t usually have that much stage production or choreography and she definitely wanted to take advantage of the budget and scale that the VMAS provided. As a result though, I think she got lost in some of the staging and her presence wasn’t shining through as much. I also think her vocals were mixed too low, Good Luck Babe is already a tough song to sing live since most of the chorus is sung in falsetto. I disagree with people saying that the theme didn’t fit for the song. She had a Joan of Arc theme running through all her looks for the night which is an interesting and fitting theme to choose given what was discussed in her Rolling Stone article! 🤔 It’s definitely not obvious, but Chappell always has a larger story to tell than what’s just on the surface!! I saw Steven Sullivan talking about how Taylor might have purposely gone backstage during Sabrina and Chappelle so she was not on camera since she knows we all would want to see her reaction, dancing, cheering them on, etc. She probably wanted them to have their moment fully and there not be any conversation about her, she wouldn't want to steal their spotlight which I think is super cool. Otherwise, there would be a ton of videos of her dancing and not the instead of the performers which is most important. And with watching your reaction and seeing you guys asking multiple times for the Taylor cam (understandable) I think this further proves this theory and shows how truly self-aware Taylor is which is just so commendable.

I was so sure we'd gotten something big more recently but going through her discography I genuinely didn't recognise any song from her last 2 releases. Taylor didn’t want to take the shine away from other nominees and winners. The VMAs this year was disappointing not presented majority of awards on stage. More of a concert than an awards show.

I loved your comments on the VMAs and especially the photos afterwards. Some great shots there! LOVE the idea of doing some lead in videos to the Grammies once the nominations are announced! Also I will watch any of your reactions, to anyone, because you always have something interesting and enlightening to say. I’m decades older than you, Bonnie, but we never lose the 20 year old in us. Benson is a hottie. I was kind of surprised the producers of the VMAs didn’t capitalize more on controversial stuff - I don’t know if you remember but it seems something wild happened every year and a lot of it was egged on by the VMA team. Lots of opportunities here that they scrupulously avoided, like not showing any of the three from the Sabrina - Shawn - Camila triangle while Shawn or Sabrina were performing. That kind of thing. I was sooo happy to see Taylor dancing to Katy. I’m not a Katy fan at all, I just loved it that Taylor was supporting her. Again, a missed opportunity for the VMA team to highlight them given their past feud. I’m not really wanting drama, just surprised at how much tamer - maybe more adult? - the VMAs have become. My Swiftie group chat thought the VMAs were so strange! The Taylor cam felt invasive but I can’t help but think they (Tree) agreed to it because she probably only wanted to accept 1-2 awards instead of the 10 she actually won. Unpopular opinion but, I don’t need a reaction from any of the artists you suggested. Respectfully, I don’t think most of their lyrics and production is deep enough to react to. I think most of it would be “oh cool key change” or “I love this beat” and just overall vibing. Taylor’s songwriting is so complex and has a good shock value upon first listen that I just don’t think the others have.

As much as I hate to inflict the horror show that is American politics onto others, I wanted to give an FYI to the girls about “childless cat ladies.” The Republican vice presidential candidate, JD Vance, has used that term to label a group of people that he basically disagrees with and to say that that group is basically ruining the country. This is a guy who bemoans the fact that Americans are having children later in life, if at all. And he has floated the idea that the childless should have less rights in America than people who have children, because he thinks, if you do not have children, you have less of a stake in the country. Obviously, he’s been getting a lot of criticism for using this phrase, and people have been co-opting the phrase and wearing it with pride like our dear Taylor, and bad ass Stevie Nicks.

It has nothing to do with long-past Taylor beef. Katy is an inauthentic artist who sold-out to work with (at best) questionable producers to try and claw her way out of her flop era. It didn’t work.
