Okay wait but Taylor’s lyric is def not an insult. He doesn’t want his friends to date her, so he’ll tell them she’s crazy so they avoid her. She doesn’t want her friends to date him, so she’ll tell them he’s gay. It’s not an insult, it’s a deterrent. Taylor’s friends wouldn’t bother flirting with a guy that’s gay. I believe that’s the intention, and everyone just took it the wrong way.

LOVE this album so much. On the topic of the “if you don’t want me, I’ll just deem you gay” lyric and Taylor’s “I’ll tell mine you’re gay” lyric: I get Bonnie’s take that it could be taken like she’s saying it as an insult. But when debut first came out and that was the only version, I always thought of it like she would tell her friends that he was gay so they wouldn’t see him as available to date. Like a guy telling his friends “my ex is obsessive and crazy” would make them not want to date her. It was like her way of getting back at him by making his available dating pool think he wasn’t into girls. I totally get why it could be taken the other way, but that’s what my 13 year old brain took from it 🤷🏼‍♀️

I (Emily) do agree with this take, and she changed it so quickly that there really wasn’t even time to see how it fully settled with public opinion! I don’t think her intention with that lyric was ever bad but I do wonder if she received some negative feedback and thought she should accommodate accordingly in an effort not to cause any unintended offence, which I can absolutely respect!

I posted this on youtube but just wanna say it again here lol. You guys are so in tune with Jack you just immediately put his songs into one of your favorite before even checking the credit. Love that for you 😂 but I also did that with sharpest tool. I just knew immediately when the beat hits on the “we never talked about it” that it’s a Jack song. I’m 99% sure he use the same instrument, synth, or whatever it is to make that beat with the one in ‘dancing with our hands tied’. That is almost the exact same beat, not the pattern, but the style and effect and tone of it is the same. And that is one of my favorite song in reputation so I recognized it straight away. I know it’s not your favorite from rep, but it also has similar vibe, like a quite emotional song with a beat driving the lyrics, but sharpest tool has a more progression from slow to fast unlike dwoht, super fast to a bit of a drop which can be quite jarring for some people. But I looooove both songs. Still can’t believe people hate Jack. Even if the songs he produced are so recognizably his, every single one of them are so unique, detailed and lyric oriented. He knows how to make the beat, atmosphere, and tiny little sounds in the background that could make lyrics more impactful, not just great to listen to. He is THE producer for the girlies who cares about their lyrical content first. I think.

I’m gonna leave a very “tell me everything is not about me, but what if it is” comment so take it with a grain of salt BUT in her Apple Music interview Sabrina said “don’t smile” is actually written about a friends experience of a break up and it was written while she was on tour that leads me to believe it could possibly be about Taylor. no that's exactly what it means and I swear growing up I saw this exact same idea somewhere else in some '90s movie or something. because I didn't grow up being a fan of her and I remember this distinctly. it's really just more of a sign of the times but I don't think it comes with homophobia attached I think it really is just I'm going to sabotage your future dating pool by making all the girls that you want to date think you're unavailable just like how Sabrina has the all the ones are gay or taken girls always say back then it was a popular saying to say all the best guys are gay and we just wish they would date us. I think growing up in that time it's kind of obvious but without that perspective I can see why some people might just assume the worst. Wow I loved busy woman!! To me the song reminded me how back when I was in the dating scene that if a guy wasn’t really into me (even if I initially thought he was cute) I would be like mehh about him if he wasn’t reciprocating. Like it actually made him less attractive to me. And then the opposite was true too. Like if somebody was way into me and treating me well then it could make them even more attractive to me (even if they weren’t really on my radar before). I don’t know if that’s what she meant but that’s what it reminded me of bc I’ve always been that way. I was usually never into chasing somebody who didn’t want me. And I’ve never really heard that put into a song! I love it

I will die on the hill that Taylor’s use of “gay” was not an insult - she’s saying that if he says things to his friends that would make her undateable (being obsessive and crazy) then she’s going to do the same, because if he’s gay her friends wouldn’t date him because they think he’s not attracted to them.
