The ancient von'kir left many of their transformative artifacts behind when they withdrew from the core of 'civilized space' several millennia ago. The elf-eared ashiri still engage in rituals using the artifacts, transforming themselves into servile 'pets' for various reasons that mostly escape the casual observer. They're quite happy to snare guests to include in their rituals, as they've done with Nashie, who doesn't seem to have quite grasped the deeply intimate and extremely permanent nature of this particular artifact's effects until it was already a too late for second thoughts.
