This week we saw the cancellation of E3 2023, and possibly the end of this major event forever! As we consider the potential demise of E3, how are you feeling about it?

I think the industry needs E3 and is making a mistake. Nothing can replace the benefit of having media, developers, publishers, and distributors all in the same physical space. The myriad chance encounters that occur between people who otherwise wouldn’t interact is what we are losing. The bean counters at every individual company understandably don’t see value in that, but that dynamic networking does add to the health of the overall industry.

I’ve never been to E3 but I always enjoyed watching the big presentations and gobbling up the commentary. But those same presentations and commentary are mostly happening now, though sometimes I’m not as aware of them. And a lot of developers just can’t compete or can’t even afford the spectacle of a physical E3 show. But I do worry a little about everything becoming these finely tailored digital showcases with not much personality. I love crowd reactions. But I definitely get it. I’m sure someday it will try to return as a big “E3 is back!!!!” thing, and maybe it will succeed. We will see.
