Hi, welcome to episode 15 of the Kit & Krysta Podcast. We are getting close to E3 SZN and even though there isn't an E3 this year, we're looking forward to sharing some of our crazy E3 stories with you. This week we're going to tell you what planning was like leading up to a big show like E3 including a wild story about a very important person who thought Breath of the Wild would fail. Also in this episode, we have a fun segment playing "Most Likely To...", talk about the games we're playing (not Elden Ring lol), share some thoughts on recent news and of course answer a hot dozen of your questions. Let's go!

Great 15th Podcast, Kit and Krysta! What would normally be E3 season is almost here and even though we’ll be without an in-person or online show from the ESA this time around, perhaps Summer Game Fest will deliver (or at least a nice Nintendo Direct on June 14th)! Interesting behind the scenes story on Breath of the Wild. Anything hit a failure for sure! Thank you for answering my question regarding Rare’s departure from Nintendo from the 1:33:05 to 1:34:44 mark. I spoke with Nintendo on the matter back in 2002 and 2003 and was told that it was due to a few factors, such as a perceived decline in quality from what Rare had in early development on Nintendo GameCube (behind the scenes Dolphin days), including key staff that was leaving and a redirection of cash into Nintendo’s own ip and R&D. Though it is true that people slowly were leaving Rare, thus the caliber of development was potentially lowering and Nintendo witnessed that internally, long run, it was the ip that Rare held, that would have forever been Nintendo’s. If Nintendo did purchase Rare fully in 2001 for instance, they could have had Retro Studios alternate between Metroid Prime and Perfect Dark in the years to come. A new PD was in development for GameCube and perhaps it wasn’t up to snuff with what Nintendo wanted, but long-run, I think it would have been valuable for them. A new Banjo-Kazooie could have come out here, a Killer Instinct there (or KI characters as guests in Mortal Kombat titles on Nintendo platforms), some WayForward developed Battletoads games, and just owning Jet Force Gemini, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Blast Corps, etc. Some companies get acquired for their talent, others for their brands…sometimes both. These days, the people that make up Rare are largely different than 20 years ago and make quality titles like Sea of Thieves and presumably, Everwild, but I think had Nintendo had access this whole time to those precious ip, especially in the day where nostalgia runs wild, there’d be even more exclusive diversity on Nintendo platforms. Then again, you could argue that Nintendo has a lot of IP that they don’t really touch too often, like F-Zero, Kid Icarus, Eternal Darkness, Golden Sun, and Star Fox as examples… so who’s to say that they would have maximized on Rare’s ip that would now be theirs. Ha ha, I guess that’s the end of my extended thoughts on the subject! Stay great and keep up the good work.
