The ongoing saga of Nintendo vs emulation took an interesting turn this week as Apple's updated App Store policies have allowed this type of software on their platform, with one such app becoming the most popular download on the service. Unlike many of Nintendo's usual opponents in this space, Apple is a company with more resources and legal means than they typically face.

How do you think Nintendo will react to this new development?

I just wanted to add that I’ve tried out this new emulator on my iPhone and I’m having a great time! In fact I remember playing Pokemon on emulators nearly 20 years ago now. But I’ve also bought every single Pokemon game, remake and virtual console re-release. And yet sometimes these emulators are just a better experience especially for older games. If Nintendo (or GameFreak in this scenario) decided to re-release these games but with the modern features emulators have, like sped up gameplay, save backups and quality upscaling, I would gladly pay money for it on the Switch! I’ve certainly given them enough in the past. They could very easily solve this issue for themselves by simply providing an experience equal to or better than current emulators.

Of course, I think we’d all LOVE for Nintendo to be more proactive in adding more legacy content to their online service. However I don’t think Nintendo really wants to do anything differently there. I can see Nintendo reaching out to Apple about removing the app or some other type of action to protect their IP. Apple is also very protective of their own IP, so I think they can probably come to some sort of agreement.
