Since Jaffe for some reason thought I was joking(?) or something, I (brandon, hello) didn't get to finish telling folks about my method for getting to sleep. I learned about it from a sleep podcast my partner was listening to and it totally works for me, so here's what it is:

- you tell yourself a very boring story, starting with a conceit like "once upon a time there was a (x sort of creature or person or something) named Y"
- you give your character a little problem or journey to go on, and it doesn't have to be, and in fact should not be particularly interesting or engaging. you don't want to think about any actual creative projects you're working on or anything like that. just your fella wants to get across the street but can't find their glasses or something.
- keep the story going, and try to stay on track without letting your mind wander. if you get slow, you can list things, like "and she brought her hat, and her cane, and her coat, and her shoes," etc. let them meet other characters, whatever, just keep it moving forward.
- basically the act of keeping your mind on track with something so pedestrian but also creative can kind of slip you into a dream state. The hardest part, really, is remembering to do it when you're trying to sleep, rather than letting your mind wander to worries or things that are actually going on in your life. so you gotta be mindful at the start of it basically.

I've tried other things like counting, thinking of nothing, etc, but this is the one that has worked for me, so hopefully it'll work for you too! Lemme know if it does!

This is a great approach! I have a kind of similar method I’ve been using for a while where I meticulously design two kaiju-style combatants and, time permitting, imagine them going at it. This doesn’t seem like it would be an especially calming process, but somehow hyperfocusing on the little details and trying to make them as weird and out there as possible gets me into a trance that inevitably and seamlessly leads to ZZZs.

nice! yeah, I guess all these things are about keeping your brain focused on something that isn't "important" until you drift off

Excited to try this! I have ADHD and my brain yells way too loud for me to get lost in breath focus or guided meditation. Trying and failing to let thoughts pass feels like squeezing my head in a vise (and NOT in a fun, relaxing way)

Nice idea! I listen to podcasts in English, as that’s not my mother tongue. And I set a timer for 15 min. Best of all are topics I know enough about, so I don’t care if I miss something. Something like Retronauts works best for me.

And do you ever continue in your dreams the story you started?

Brandon you are a jewel 💎
