I guess it's a little blurry, oops. But yeah, two episodes back I (brandon) recommended buying games at Good Deal Games because they're just a regular store! And they have games in stock that are expensive on ebay. And if you mention insert credit you can get genesis games $5 off.

So yeah, here are the things I got. Beggar Prince and Magic Girl are two Taiwanese games that superfighter team localized. the quality of the cartridge and manual and everything is pretty nice! And I think all genesis releases should go cardboard, it's less wasteful.

the 3 genesis games in the back are all piko interactive ones. they're cheap feeling and sometimes have the wrong sized label on them, but Magic Warrior is one of the more playable Taiwanese RPGs on the console. Water Margin is like Knights of the Round but more simplified (too bad), and Yang Family is a bit more engaging gameplay-wise but less visually striking.

Implode was the first (I think) homebrew turbografx game to get pressed to disc back in the day, something like 2010. The original guy doesn't even have any of these anymore.

Skyhammer meanwhile is a Jaguar game I always wanted to get. It's one of those unreleased but complete enough type games that Songbird releases, much more complete than most of the stuff they bring out. It was a Rebellion game, and is far and away the best looking 3D on the jaguar. Like all Jaguar games it basically sucks but is still interesting because it feels like if video games were described to aliens and then they made some. If they'd been able to bring stuff like this out at the start maybe they would've had something with that platform.

Here's a video of it... amazingly the jaguar still hasn't been emulated so it's hard to find good footage (without somebody talking over it). Somehow stuff like this that's barely holding together feels like the Most Cyberpunk Thing in the 90s vision of that concept.

Wow that Jag game is really something...I'm a big fan of grungy polygonal games that are actively falling apart at the seams (more aesthetically...playing them is usually painful) and this hits the spot

yeah, this is absolutely a game to just hang around in rather than actually engage in the mechanics of. luckily that's largely possible in Skyhammer! If I get steaming working for old game consoles again I'll stream this.

taiwanese games, neat. i'm always curious about console games developed in non-japan asia

So these were all grey market unofficial releases (I think!?), but certainly full featured, which makes me wonder if there were some official channels going on. They stand up against many releases of the day but all made some concessions. Like Magic Warrior is probably one of the best taiwanese RPGs for the system, and it uses an ATB system like final fantasy (almost no RPGs on genesis did that), but it's also a bit simple in some ways and I think the sound especially is lacking in a lot of these games. Not a lot of channels used, tinny sound profile, etc. Still an interesting glimpse into another genesis game market.

Where is Good Deal Games? Didn't see their address online, only travel dates. Assuming it's on the west coast, I'll pull through on my next road trip!

they don't have a physical store, it's just online. I assume they're in like iowa or something. (~brandon)
