I love the eight steps. Even if they don't end up applying to the particular session or system i'm prepping for, they're useful to go through. It's my warm up, gets the creative juices flowing. SO far I've found they apply very well to Mork Borg, Cy_Borg, Deathbringer, Index Card RPG, Viking Death Squad, and Dungeon Crawl Classics... as well as the intended 5E obviously. Haven't gotten to play or run shadowdark yet, but believe you me, it's on the list.
