I feel your frustration, But this season will be making Progress very soon

Yo Mama

As stressful as this season has been so far, there is one scene in the next episode that almost makes it all worth it

Trdmrk

I also hated Herc this whole season lol

Omar Al-Farouq

"I came onto the eastern, and it was a piece of shit Lieutenant hoping to be a Captain. Piece of shit Sergeant hoping to be a Lieutenant. Pretty soon we have piece of shit patrol men trying to figure out the jobs for themselves. And, so what happens then? It's hard as hell to live it down. There comes a day whether it's about you or the work." Daniels had already called it out in Season 1 and we have seen the progression from Season 1 until now in Season 4 on how far Carver and Herc have come. Carver went from one of those "piece of shit" to "good poolise"(although, he is far from perfect. However, he is still trying and learning) while Herc has stayed as one of those "piece of shit" that ended up being fast tracked to be the lead detective for the Narcotics team. I think what I like about the Wire is that it went from a heavy focus on politics, gang and police work into incorporating the education system. The show was able to portray their "piece of shit" in the education system, in which, Prez made the "Juking the stats" as to say, they are not that different from what he saw during his police days. Although my environment was nowhere near as dangerous for the kids in Bmore, I'm glad I wasn't the only one rolling my eyes during those standardize testing days lol.

I think Herc is the prototypical cop. Especially this season. It'll bear out this way for most of the cops we meet in the series and the ones for whom it doesn't, will be their friends and advocates. I know you don't like Burrell but I enjoy him so much as being a savvy operator. Especially when his back's up against the wall. Not as much of a bastard as Valchek and Rawls but not so much where you get to like him. But also Frankie Faison plays it so well.

Running red

The scene with Colvin and the kids reminds me of season 1 when Dee took Donette to a fancy restaurant

That restaurant scene and the following one paint a pretty accurate picture of these kids' everyday lives. They're absolutely out of their element, having to face the unknown, and in response they lash out in anger and frustration. But once placed in front of their peers back in class the next day, they play it all cool like it was the best thing ever, because they can't/don't know how to admit a weakness or shortcoming

skye

the difference between Carver and Herc, imo, is while you're right that Carver is far from perfect, but it's the fact that he's trying and it comes from a genuine place and he truly cares and his development shows that so well but, with Herc, it's ironic bc, in the beginning of the show, i'd say Herc was the one between the two who seemed like had empathy and now all he cares about is image and wanting to be at the top, which sucks bc he literally doesn't care who gets hurt in the process (aka Bubs, as an example, and maybe he doesn't know the extent of what him not keeping that promise would happen to Bubs but, at the same time, it's obvious what his priorities are).

Omar Al-Farouq

I agree with you there and I should clarify it, since I was being lazy with it, when I was writing it. Most of them, if not all, started from a genuine place, hence, "patrol men trying to figure out the jobs for themselves." At some point down their careers, some of them realized if they played the game right or were just lucky, hence "there comes a day whether it's about you or the work." They would be able to get into higher position of power without having to do any heavy lifting. While, doing whatever it takes to protect their new position of power, even if it means hurting other people, like you said with Bubs.
