Better Call Saul 1x8 Full-Length Uncut Reaction

Yeah this story does become split in 2. It is the Mike story & the Jimmy/Saul story, but they do often intersect :) Chuck's betrayal is ruthless and harsh, for sure. There's a snobbish element in his critique of Jimmy's law school. The bar is the bar so that really doesn't matter. If anything it amplifies the accomplishment of passing. But yeah there's also a reluctance from Chuck to accept that Jimmy's path is fixed. He was a conman and a crook, as we've seen, but he's certainly trying to fight the good fight now and be a proper lawyer. But perhaps due to his former life, he's not totally averse to bending the rules a bit in that fight? So far we've already seen him try the skateboard scam on Betsy, the billboard stunt, the coffee stunt & then have Mike break & enter the Kettleman place to re-take their stolen money. In E5, after the billboard stunt, Jimmy says "from here on out I'm gonna play by the rules" and Chuck responds "as any lawyer should" and I think it sums them both up well. Jimmy sees the rules/law as curtailments, Chuck sees them as instructions ("the law is sacred" from this episode). Of course we know Jimmy becomes Saul: so is Chuck right? Or did Chuck's animus create a self-fulfilling prophecy? A bit of both? Maybe the great debate of BCS! Looking forward to the finale! :)

“I thought you were proud of me” 😢 Watching this back, I love that they chose to put this specific Mike storyline in this episode. We get Mike’s speech about how meaningless the law is to morality, and then only a few minutes later, Chuck holding Jimmy down because “the law is sacred”.

I love how well this show portrays the dichotomy between doing wrong for the right reasons and doing right for the wrong reasons. Jimmy has his heart in the right place, but bends the rules to get there. His brother won't bend the rules at all, to the detriment of clients who could surely use his services -- except he abandons them if they don't serve his ends and his ego enough. As we all know, as BBad viewers, Chuck has basically created a monster he couldn't even imagine. Chuck has set Jimmy on this path, to become the kind of lawyer who rejoices at any opportunity to outmaneuver professional, smarmy lawyers, the likes of which Jesse's parents would be inclined to hire. "How about it, counselor. Do you *concur*??" It's all in service of getting back at Chuck, for this betrayal here.
