Loneliness is seen as the experience of social isolation and a lack of meaningful connections. It can have significant effects on both mental and physical health and may increase the risk of premature mortality, comparable to the risks associated with obesity and substance abuse (Holt-Lunstad et al., 2015). Due to its widespread presence and potential negative health outcomes, loneliness has become an important area of study within the psychological and medical fields.

Research indicates a connection between social isolation and cardiovascular health, suggesting that loneliness may impact blood pressure, inflammation, and the regulation of stress hormones (Valtorta et al., 2016). Additionally, studies have shown that having social support can enhance immune functionality, consequently reducing the risks of infection and chronic illness, and can promote faster recovery (Cohen et al., 1997). Loneliness can also disrupt sleep patterns (Hom et al., 2020), whereas social connections have been found to improve sleep quality.

From a psychological perspective, loneliness can lead to a cycle of negative thinking and social withdrawal. Meanwhile, engaging socially can help disrupt this cycle, developing a sense of belonging and enhancing mental health (Hawkley et al., 2010). Particularly, strong social connections provide necessary emotional support that can protect against suicidal thoughts, especially in vulnerable populations (Joiner et. al, 2009).

Cognitive engagement through social interactions is essential for maintaining brain function and may help delay cognitive decline, including dementia (Lara et al., 2019). Beyond that, solid social networks often encourage healthier lifestyle choices, such as increased physical activity and balanced nutrition, which can lower the risk of lifestyle-related diseases (Umberson et al., 2010). Improving social bonds is also beneficial for psychological well-being, promoting resilience, trust, and community, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more fulfilling life (Cacioppo et al., 2011).

This field also contains a subfield that will reverse the negative effects of Loneliness.
