As much as I love this movie, I do understand why Stephen King was upset about it. In particular, Jack's character was meant to have more redeeming qualities and seem like a tragic figure who tried but couldn't overcome his demons (at least that's what I remember him saying) in this movie though, Jack seems a lot more villanous and deterministically antagonistic. Given he's the main character and the hotel is meant to bring the madness out of a person, I don't think Kubrick really paid much attention to that kind of character development and it does take away from the original novel. As far as cinematography, dialogue and the scenes are concerned though, it's an absolute masterclass of a movie.
