Michael Kang-Beats

Randy's story so sad. Look at those early episodes... he was always smiling and laughing. He's a shell of himself. Brings me to tears each time. Great reaction, my friends. Thank you.

ShaneSpear

It took less than four months for these kids to go from hunting rare pigeons and throwing piss balloons to ...this.

Michael Kang-Beats

Bubs need to stop thinking he's gonna be some kind of teacher/life coach/mentor. Not saying Bubs is responsible for Sherrod's death, but he is just not responsible enough.

Michael Kang-Beats

Y'all gotta react to BEEF on Netflix. 9 episodes. 30 minutes each.

One of the greatest episodes of television ever!

Alexander

the greatest trick the devil loserfer ever played was making people believe he isn't real. Pls react to Michael & the Exorcist "I saw her climbing on the wall" ft Dan Rehill

Alexander

the greatest trick the devil ever played was making people think he doesn't exist.

One of the saddest, if not the saddest episode in the entire show. I felt so bad for Randy bc he didn't look for trouble, it just found him. Naymond was born into a tough situation but if he had Michael's inner strength, he could've been okay. Michael is basically built for the streets but his story is probably the darkest out of all of them. It really goes to show how important guidance and environment play a part in kids' potential.

Yeah, this episode is absolutely incredible, lol. Idk, if it's my absolute #1 favorite of the show (probably Middle Ground for me), just because it's almost TOO much, but it's definitely right up there. Like goddamn, how emotional and shocking can one episode be? It's actually physically draining to watch, lol, shit fucked up my day the first time I watched it. I agree with Formal, that I didn't really love the Sherrod death scene. I am not sure why they added an extra cut to make it so obvious it would happen. Everything else is great, though. It's interesting that each of the summer boys+Sherrod has a man trying to look out for them that isn't their father (which has to the point I think). It got to me when Cutty pushed Mike away the last time and Carver failed to protect Randy. I'd be interested to hear how y'all rank the seasons after this finale. Seems like 4 is y'all favorite.

Every time I watch this episode it gets me. Respect to all the kids acting

I always assumed Chris had some military training. There was an episode of Gangland (History Channel) that showed a police gun fight with a gang member who used detailed combat tactics as he cornered off with them. Turned out that white supremacists, Bloods, Crips, and MS-13s were sending young gang members into the military to train and bring those fighting skills back to them to train other gang members. Chris works and acts that way. He's even smart enough to always look unassuming and is far from flashy. Snoop, who was already deadly, just bounces her own abilities off of Cris's unique training. That's what my imagination says anyway.

You some semper fi MFs for not shedding a single tear on camera

Summary of the number of episodes in each season, for completeness and FYI: S1, 13 S2, 12 S3, 12 S4, 13 S5, 10

And BTW, this series was always meant by David Simon et al. to have 5 seasons, each focusing on a different element of Baltimore/Society/Life -- won't tell you about season 5 in order not to spoil, but you can already tell the first four seasons' elements: criminals, labor (dock workers), politics, education/schooling, in that order. They almost failed to get funding from HBO a couple of times to continue to their designed goal, since the series just didn't have the ratings (at least not back then), but luckily back then HBO still had the full ballZ to commit to artistry and literary value, which it's now starting to lose more and more for money and cost-cutting after the corporate acquisition...hopefully won't go farther than it already has, but not holding my breath...

I think it is the best TV series of all time, and there is a reason why it's studied in college literature courses: David Simon et al. based the whole thing on Greek Tragedy/Drama (with its characters and elements corresponding to the same on the show), and Shakespearian drama -- there are Easter Eggs all over the show pointing to these, and I bet 99% of people don't pick up on them, but still just enjoy the phenomenal storytelling, execution, and naturalistic depiction of Baltimore/inner-city/everything, which on top of everything was made on a limited budget with great network risk, AND introducing largely unknown actors representing minorities (many of which blew up afterwards of course). Another major theme is cyclicity, with cycles repeating themselves through time, which I think both of you already came up with at some point in the commentary. For some reason the literary information (like from those college courses) is not really covered on the internet, even though it's obvious to anyone acquainted with the original material and with David Simon's work. I will write more way later after the whole thing, in order not to spoil, but believe me, this show is way deeper than it appears, even as good as it is on the surface. Wanted to alert you to the great depth of this literary masterpiece.

physaks

I've already taken up enough of the comment space here for now, but to conclude here's a reasonable summary of the academic interest in the series EVEN from 13 years ago from Slate magazine. Make sure to read both the initial part about sociological courses and the latter part about literary courses -- I CHECKED, NO SPOILERS that you haven't already seen: https://slate.com/culture/2010/03/why-are-professors-at-harvard-duke-and-middlebury-teaching-courses-on-david-simon-s-the-wire.html I don't agree with every point raised in the article, in particular with Mittell's, since &R *A %P $E is a critical plot element in at least two cases (Randy's school-snitching thing most recently, and Wee-Bey's party abuse of the woman who OD'ed later in S1E8). But it's a good sense of just how culturally significant this show is. Anyway, sorry for the length, LOVE THE REACTIONS, CONTINUE ASAP!!

Make sure you watch the prequal clips before starting season 5! or after. i dont know which was intended

The scene where Carcetti goes to Annapolis to see the governor and is left waiting until he's about to leave is a real story from Maryland politics. (The guy who plays the security guard who stops Tommy from leaving is the former Maryland governor who snubbed the real-life inspiration for Carcetti.)
