Today we enjoyed The Ruins, a 2008 film that really just didn't quite hit the spot.

I read this book and it freaked me out, so I was a little wary about watching the movie. Fortunately (?) the movie drained a lot of the horror out of it. There are several scenes they pulled from the novel but didn't rewrite to make sense for the events of the movie, which is why it feels so disjointed. For instance, the scene where Stacy 'confronts' Eric and Amy about supposedly cheating. In the novel, the vines make sounds that insinuate those two are having sex. The vines are a much more malicious force that toy with the characters a lot more psychologically. I don't know if the movie cut down on that because it seemed silly (the whole premise is evil vines, just OWN it), but it takes away a LOT of the horror and the sense of futility.

How smart are these plants that they know Matthias is related to a previous victim and know what mobile ringtone to imitate?

That's what I assumed, that it was the plants making any off-screen sound. It seems the book definitely has a better developed story though. The movie basically just has 'plant bad' and that's it. XD
