So as I made this video I came to the realisation that I played it wrong and didn't pay attention. I did still really love it (to be clear), but take my criticisms with a pinch of salt. This is MEGA SUBJECTIVE

I understand your critiques, and I actually had similar issues in my first play through. As a puzzle game it has great ideas but a couple quality of life fixes could've helped. Weirdly, the difficulty of the puzzles actually spiked for me the closer I got to the end, sometimes what ends up being the correct answer can feel a little arbitrary (especially with defining the cause of death), and with fewer possible entries you lose the helpful confirmation you get after every 5 entries solved. But Obra Dinn is by far one of my all time favorite games. I'm a historian and the sheer amount of love that clearly went into the little historical details makes it shine for me. The ship itself is its own character and one of my favorite things to do after my first run with most of the mysteries/entries solved (I never actually got 100%) was to just walk around the ship with all of the rooms unlocked. The sound design is amazing, it's not just that the ship creaks but each deck has a different sound and feel, you get a sense of this ship as it once was: a floating town but one that's now dead. With only a few lines of dialogue and some models it did a great job (in my view) in showing all the little relationships between officers, crew, and passengers. One of the highest compliments I can give it is that it's (for now) the only video-game equivalent of the atmosphere/vibes of the movie Master and Commander

I started playing Obra Dinn but never finished it as I felt it became a bit convoluted. My flatmates kept insisting it got better but I ended up a bit... too complex, i guess? I adore the stylistic decisions in the game, as you mentioned. It has a really unique feel to it because of this style. It also had an interesting mechanic of making the player piece together deaths based on previous and current context. However, this doesn't stop it being a bit too confusing for me. Granted I am a bit dumb but yeah. Thanks for the great review! :))
