Last day of September my Patrons! Hope you're all enjoying the encroaching Autumn/Winter days.

This is the first draft of a YouTube video that will be live on my channel on Monday. It's not entirely finished but it does exist! So please enjoy. As always, I'm open to feedback for future videos.

Moreover, we also have:

  • Sunday: Overwatch 5 Minute Review
  • Tuesday: Gris 5 Minute Review
  • TBD, probably later next week: Sneak Peek - Blair Witch Review

We're eating good this weekend!

SOTC is such a great game and I think you touched on basically everything I felt it contributed to the gaming world. The setting being the graveyard of a civilization that had done incredible, transformative things, brought low and ultimately destroyed by something we ultimately learn nearly nothing about. The sheer determination of Wander to kill the colossi but not explore or question anything. With so many games inundating us with information, codices, and wikis, SOTC is frustratingly coy with lore. I think this video reflects a lot of the things you brought up in the Edith Finch video - the tropes had a huge impact when they were initially presented, and possibly now that they've been refined and (ostensibly) perfected, the game hits differently.

Very true! I feel like (since I didn't play San Andreas), SOTC was also my chance to discover internet/gaming myths and legends - the game was even teased with a fake news article saying some weird old rock robot had washed ashore somewhere, with some (at the time) very convincing photographs :D

Watched the full version today and I loved it. I didn't even know about some of the secrets you spoke of. This truly was a masterpiece of a game, and it is a shame there probably will never be anything else like it. There is one game, Praey for the Gods (yes the spelling is bad, Bethesda forced the poor indie devs to change the name because of their game, "Prey (2017)"), which has a similar formula, but with somewhat clunky third-person combat and survival elements needlessly bolted on. It does have a pretty cool grappling hook, though, which is neat, but only a handful of colossi by comparison. Still, it's the only thing even remotely similar I can think of.

A few people mentioned Preayayayayapaya of the Gods in the comments of that video, and honestly I'm fairly intrigued! It is a shame they had to rename it and apparently the game isn't /brilliant/, but it's always worth a shot right :D
