So, the whole fungus infection is kinda based on real science, but it's very improbable that it would take over humans in that way. The fungus they reference in the show, cordiceps would have to mutate in several major ways to even come near anything like in the show or game, but there are some things that are close to the truth. For example, it's true that fungus infections are becoming slightly more of an issue with global warming. as of now, it's not too bad, mostly people that already have weak or compromised immune systems are at risk of fungus infections of any kind, but there have been a rise of them over the last couple of years, though not only because of global warming, but more because of the pandemic compromising more people. In fact the greatest risk of fungal infection is that it will spread even more to our crops, making it harder to feed ourselves. Also, the show makes the assumption that there isn't any medicine against fingal infections, but there are anti-fungal medicine, though there is a rising concern that fungi are becoming more resistant to those.

I read an article that talked about how covid infections damage our immunities to many things including how resistant our bodies are to fungal infections. there's still a lot to be studied especially with climate change playing a factor as well. improbable is very accurate, but we also don't know what the future holds when we are currently letting a virus run rampant through our bodies and pretty much completely giving up on trying to mitigating multiple infections.

So fun fact, the actress who plays Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies, is also the voice actress for the same character in the game and at the beginning the scientist talking about the fungus is the brother from The Mummy movies if anyone was wondering why he looked so familiar
