you have to remember that The American Revolutionary War was the first war that everyone used guns, so this new way of fighting was new.. The had to line up in lines so close was because the guns at that time were not very accuate, so using a wall of guns was the best way to fight. What confused the English was the American mostly ( espaecally in the south) didn't fight like that...this way of fighting went to the civil war and into the Boer wars into WWI where the guns were much better and automatic guns came into play.
