Terrible losses in this episode. First their lieutenant is killed on the stretcher (Lt. Jones “Hillbilly”), which causes their NCO, Gunny Sgt. Haney to break down. Then their beloved Captain Haldane “Ack Ack” gets killed by a sniper. Sledge wrote in his diary that the loss of their captain was the worst grief he suffered in the war, as he was like a father to them. We also see the “death” of Sledge’s innocence. I think he wanted to take the gold teeth from the dead Japanese soldier because they took from him - his captain, his lieutenant and his innocence. Snafu stopped him because he didn’t want to see Eugene go down the same dark place he’s at. It’s going to get worse. The Pacific war was sheer hell.
