Yank isn't really a bad word at all. Derives from Yankee, which is largely what northerners were referred to in the Civil War. Today it just is used by people to refer to American's in general. You often hear British people refer to us by that term.

This part is based on Bob Leckie's book (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmet_for_My_Pillow). It's rumored that her name wasn't actually Stella, due to Stella being Australian sang for "Girl". That Bob used that name to obscure her identity.

I thought Sheila is slang for girl. Stella means “star”. There was no Stella, but Sheila is the name Leckie used in his memoir. Sheila was married and cheating on her husband so Leckie dumped her when he found out.

They were in Melbourne for a year. Leckie called it “The Great Debauch”, as they drank and messed around with girls during that time.

If I’m right (but I’m not quite sure) the British wrote Yankee Doodle to make fun of us but I guess we were like “fuck it” haha I could be wrong but that’s what I was told.
