Chester puller was promoted to general after the war. He is/was probably one of the most beloved officers by his marines. His son wrote a book after he got back from Vietnam about growing up under his father’s shadow and what not. He lost both of his legs in Vietnam and fell into a bad depression and turned to drugs and alcohol. He later took his own life. It’s a really sad story.

AS USUAL.......GREAT JOB YOU TWO!!!!!

Those marines were really built different. They went through absolute hell. Sgt. John Basilone actually did even more than what they showed, they decided to leave some of it out because it would appear too unreal for the series. You guys are great reactors, excited for the rest of the episodes! It'll start to get reeeeeaall tough.

Great reaction! What they didn’t portray was the fact that the attack by the Japanese went on for two days nonstop. John Basilone and his Marines manned the two machine gun nests, going back and forth, bringing ammo, fixing jams, etc. Basilone was an expert machine gunner, who would blindfold himself, take apart and re-assemble the machine gun so he can fix jams at night by touch. He burned his arm by picking up the sizzling hot machine gun because he lost his glove. After the second day, only 3 Marines were left standing. They ran out of machine gun and rifle ammo and fought off the last of the attackers with machetes and pistols. The Japanese lost a regiment in that attack.

Basilone won the Medal of Honor for his actions in that battle. Eugene Sledge - the guy with the heart murmur enlisted and later wrote a book about his experience with the Marines called “With the Old Breed”.
