DDay is the term they used for the first day of a major campaign. The invasion of North Africa, Italy, Iwo Jima etc, all had their own DDays. This particular one, June 6, 1944, was the biggest(the Germans had conquered all of European continent and this was the Allies first attempt at landing on it). The heavy losses they took on that day and the strategic importance of the campaign is what makes it remembered as THE DDay.
