As a massive fan of Batman 89 and Returns I always saw this film as a metaphor for Michael Keaton's past 'Batman' role. But according to Michael Keaton, however, it is not the case. But you can easily see the Parallels and how Batman 89 along with Keaton kickstarted the modern mature superhero genre that we saw with films like Iron Man (Inspired by how Batman Begins told a superhero origin) only for Keaton to drop the role of Batman once WB wanted to make the films more kid friendly giving birth to Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. It also reminds me a little bit of Batman: The Animated Series episode "The Gray Ghost" (1992) starring Adam West as Actor Simon Trent who is on the verge of bankruptcy and cannot find any acting roles thanks to being typed cast as The Gray Ghost a TV hero that a young Bruce Wayne grew up watching. Adam West himself played Batman in the 1960s TV series and 1966 movie and in real life struggled to find roles after coming off Batman. So the character of Simon Trent was based on Adam West's real life struggles finding new roles after being Batman. Gray Ghost of course standing in for a Batman like character.
