Chapter 5 

Chapter 6 Gaining Strength

Luffy got some medical treatment once they got out of the mines. The village was so grateful, there were monsters in the mine that spawned normally, adventurers used to accompany miners inside and that was enough. Once the wave monsters started nesting there things got impossible. Monkey, Law, and Zoro stayed in the village for a bit.

He sold some of the ore he obtained and fed some of it to his shield.

Light Metal Shield: DEF + 3: Equip Effect: Magic Defense 1

They took a job from the miners and he got to observe professionals. Law and Zoro trained with the miners, strengthening their bodies as they worked to get ore. He used his new Two-Headed Black Dog Shield while he was on guard duty. Thanks to Alert Bark, when a monster tried to get near them, his shield would bark and alert them.

Luffy could fend them off, the Dog Bite Skill lashing out at creatures that attacked him. While not super powerful it was giving Law and Zoro the chance to go in for the kill. The miners were so grateful and impressed, so they gave Luffy and his party some mining tips. In mines there were rich vines were you could find high quality ore and rare minerals, the down side was that monsters tended to be attracted to these veins. They explored the mines quite a bit.

With Luffy, Law, and Zoro’s help they were able to go deep into the mines and find a rich vein. It was the home of an Evil Centipede. “Cave Spider Shield: Web Spitter!” Luffy changed his shield and provided support, binding the vicious bug monster giving Law and Zoro time to slice and dice. Luffy even landed a good punch. “Gum Gum Pistol!” He sent his arm stretching back, and used the recoil to double his attack power.

He fed the whole beast to his shield.

Evil Centipede Shield 2: ATK + 3, Shield Skill: Centi Armor

Luffy activated the Evil Centipede 2 Shield. Centi Armor gave Luffy red armor that spread from the shield over his body. It boosted Luffy’s defenses but this armor was unique as with Luffy’s rubber body this armor could actually extend with him.

He liked his new armor, but he could only use it when he had this shield equipped. Thanks to their help the miners taught Luffy Mining Arts, a special skill that not only boosted his Mining Ability it unlocked Pickax Shield 2: Mining Skill 2, Vein Blessing. Now when Luffy or his party mined the vein would be blessed granting better materials.

Luffy used this skill and was able to find some Magisteel Ore, a very valuable material used in crafting magic weapons and armor. He didn’t find a lot of it so he planned to sell instead of feeding it to his shield.

When they tried to leave they were attacked by an Armorsaurus, a powerful beast that was attracted to the Magisteel Ore. This creature lived in mines and caves and fed on ore strengthening it’s natural defenses. They were quite fast and vicious, with deadly claws and fangs. Luffy held the beast off allowing the miners to escape, but this creature was level 15 and its defenses were quite high. Zoro and Law couldn’t break the armored scales it possessed.

“Let’s try this!” He activated his new Centipede Shield. “Paralysis Mist!” A green vapor was expelled and blasted right into the beast’s face. It was knocked out allowing Zoro and Law to kill the beast by stabbing it in the face! Their levels boosted Luffy to 11 and his party jumped to Level 14!

Luffy dissected the beast, gaining Armorsaurus Scales, He fed half to the shield and then the Armorsaurus Meat was absorbed.

Scale Shield: DEF + 5 ATK + 1 Shield Skill: Rough Scale – Causes damage when struck by a physical (non weapon attack)

Armorsaurus Shield: Armor Boost – Boosts the effects of armors worn.

Luffy’s time in the mines allowed him to master Alert Bark, so he could apply this effect to all his shield. It was nice to have an early warning system. He also mastered Web Spitter so he could use it in other shields, but the down side was it cost more SP to use them outside of their source shield. Luffy would have to figure out how to use his Equip Effects and the Shield Specific Skills together.

If he master’s a shield, the equip effects could be shared among his other shields for a bit more SP, but while in the source shield the sp is greatly decreased. The more he used certain effects or the longer he spent using a shield the more he’d master them. This led to him unlocking the Cave Spider Shield 2.

Cave Spider Shield 2: DEF + 3 SPD + 3 Equip Effect: Spider Sense, Shield Skill: Sticky Net – Fires a glue-like webbing that traps an opponent.

Luffy wondered what the difference between Spider Sense and Alert Bark was, thankfully his help option explained. Alert Back would activate if a monster or someone identified as an enemy came near. Spider Sense would activate in any form of danger, be it natural or unnatural. So if someone was to poison his food, his Spider Sense would activate warning him of danger.

Zoro and Law both gained Apprentice Miner skills, this allowed them to gain EXP while mining. IT was possible they could gain skills he couldn’t since he was a hero. He wasn’t sure and didn’t really think on it too long. If it meant they could get stronger he was cool with it. Monkey still got shared EXP from them as a party.

The trio stayed in town for a few days, grinding, leveling up, and Luffy even unlocking some new shields from the local monsters.

He also gained some other shields from materials he found around. Wood Shield 2: Woodcutting Skill 1 and the Pipe Shield: DEF + 2 Equip Effect: Shield Prison. Luffy was focused on mastering his shields believing they would help him get stronger to survive. There was a cool down between changing shields, so if one shield wasn’t strong enough he’d be stuck in that shield until it was over.

For Zoro and Law, these days were quite nice. Luffy was taking such good care of them. He let them rest when they needed it, they got to eat plenty, Zoro got to train as much as he wanted, and Law got to study as much as he wanted. Luffy bought Zoro weights to train with and bought Law books, even though their money was tight. What they really enjoyed was spending time with Luffy, the best part of their day was when they got to climb into bed with him every night.

The two had a bit of a rivalry, Law did his best to keep up with Zoro but the dog demi-human had a lot more stamina than he did. He didn’t let that stop him. Law kept trying to train his body as well as his mind. Zoro was a bit intimidated by Law’s intelligence, he turned to meditation to strengthen his mind as well as his body. Luffy didn’t mind the rivalry as long as they didn’t take it too far, a healthy rivalry could benefit the party, but a toxic one would tear them all down.

Their grinding was really paying off, be it hunting monsters, working in the mines, individual training, or Luffy working on making medicines, the shared EXP was stacking up and the levels were rising. Even Luffy’s pet balloons were getting stronger.

As their levels got higher, Zoro and Law felt the signs of the change happening. They didn’t know what Luffy was gonna say or think, they just hoped he wouldn’t hate them.

Luffy decided to head back towards the city, he wanted to check into when the Wave was coming. He almost didn’t want to go back, their time in this little village had been so relaxing, even with fighting monsters. Thanks to Luffy’s sensory skills, even when a pack of Porcupine Monsters ambushed them they were ready.

He trapped one in Shield Prison, while Zoro and Law hunted the other two in the tall grass. The two were competing on who could kill their prey first. Luffy was focused on watching them and let his guard slip for a moment. His Shield Prison time limit ran out and the Porcupine monster escaped, growling and charging at Luffy.

Monkey dodged the charge, thanks to Spider Sense, but the beast shot its quills out and ended up stabbing Luffy in the shoulder. The monster had a natural piercing effect, which ignored some of Luffy’s defenses. “Gah!” Luffy’s balloons sprang into action, distracting the monster long enough for Zoro and Law to dive in and stab it to death. The multi colored balloons were now fully tamed, and mostly just clung to Luffy while in battle, but if he got hurt or were ordered they’d jump off and swarm an enemy with vicious bites.

Zoro and Law each got a kill. So there was plenty to skin, cook, and even feed the shield.

Luffy pulled out the needle and fed it to the shield. He unlocked the Beast Shield: Beast Type Monster Damage Down 2% and the Animal Needle Shield: ATK + 2, Shield Effect: Needle Shield (Small)

“Are you alright Luffy?” Zoro asked, his voice deeper and more manly.

“I’m fine.” He said.

“Luffy-ya you need to be more careful.” Law’s voice was also more mature, having a sexy draw to it. The two weren’t little kids anymore, now looking to be Luffy’s age if not a little older. Zoro was tall, dripping with muscles from his intense training, Law was more lanky but had muscle to him as well. Despite these changes Luffy couldn’t see them. On one hand the two were happy Luffy wasn’t disgusted by their change on the other he was still treating them like kids.

They wanted their relationship with Luffy to grow, but it seemed stuck, and they didn’t know why. “Come on, we need to get you guys some new weapons and armor before the wave.” He said, and they followed.
