Chapter 10 Blooming

The group continues on Route 3 to Nacarene City for Ash and Cress’s first Contest. Chili had obtained a new friend in Darumaka. Cilan and Cress were eager to catch a new friend of their own, especially after Ash showed a special reward.

For some reason Iris was still following them. The boys had enough. “Do you need something?”

“I uh...um...yes!” She pointed at Cilan. “You’re a Pokemon Connoisseur so I want you to help me with me and my Axew!”

Cilan couldn’t say no, it was his job and his passion. It seemed Iris hadn’t battled with Axew before, so asked for a special test battle. B, A, and S Class Connoisseurs were able to give test battles, as their Pokemon were powerful enough and skilled enough to handle it.

Ash and his mons sat down to watch, curious on how Axew battles, but was soon very disappointed. “Is she serious?” Pikachu’s jaw dropped.

Iris kept calling Axew to use Scratch, but Pansage was easily able to hold it back. “Come on Cilan, this is serious!”

“I am serious, blocking an opponent’s move can be key in battle.”

“Come on Iris, doesn’t Axew know any other moves?” He was wanting to see how the dragon type battles but this was sad.

“Well there is one…” She twiddled her fingers. “Axew use Dragon Rage!”

The mon tried to ready the attack, only to. “Ax-chu!” He sneezed and the attack blew up in his face.

“That was more of a Dragon Sneeze than a Dragon Rage…” Ash pointed out.

“Shut it!” Iris snapped.

She explained that she just got Axew not too long ago from the Elder from her village. “So you are a member of the village of dragons, I had suspected.” Cress said.

“Village of Dragons?” Chili nodded.

“It’s a place where the trainers are said to raise and train dragon types. I’ve heard that Dragon Masters there have the power to connect to a dragon’s heart.”

‘Kinda like I can do with my aura…’ Ash thought. “Are you able to do that Iris?” The girl tensed.

“Well no...I’m just a beginner…” Ketchum twitched in annoyance as the girl had been acting mighty high and mighty to him when they first met.

“So is Axew your first Pokemon?”

“No...he’s not...he’s my first dragon but…” She pulled out another monster ball. It seemed to be a sore subject.

“Why don’t you have a battle with Ash or Chili, some real battle experience will help Axew a lot.”

Chili and Ash were pumped up.

Iris huffed. “No way...I don’t want to lose!”

“That’s a rotten way to look at it, if you keep that mindset up, neither you or Axew will ever grow.” Ash said.

“Shut up!” Iris got up. “What do you know?”

“A lot more than you. No matter if I won or lost, I always tried my best. When I won it was great, but losing taught me about what I was lacking. If you’re too scared to lose, you won’t try, and you won’t grow.” His mons nodded in an agreement.

Pikachu knew it from the start as he’s been Ash’s partner from the beginning. Iris should listen to Ash it was her fear of losing that was restricting her potential and creating the rift between her and her first Pokemon.

Not that Ash liked losing, and he took losses pretty hard when he first started out, but he’s grown a lot since then. Even Ash recognized his mistakes, realizing had he known then what he knew now he’d have been able to do things a lot differently.

Iris was adamant on doing things her way.

It was almost lunch time so they made camp, and Cilan got to work on making lunch.

Ash and Chili were practicing a double battle, Oshawott and Summer vs Pansear and Darumaka.

Cress had gone off to look for a new Pokemon. He might have needed two in the upcoming contest so he wanted to be prepared.

Cress returned to the group, and Ash was finishing up his double battle. Oshawott had learned Aqua Jet replacing Tackle. It was good battle experience for Chili and Darumaka, the monster having Taunt, which could effect an opponent from using their non damaging moves.

“Let’s see!” Cilan said.

“Purrloin are wicked tricksters!” Cilan was shaking.

“One took a fancy to Cilan when we were kids, it was a pest. It constantly stole from him, and after a time he began to deduce it was him stealing his stuff, but everyone found it so cute they forgave it or didn’t believe Cilan.” Simplifying it quite a bit, the thing stole his food, his tools, even his underwear and swim trunks. It enjoyed Cilan’s reaction the most so Cilan became it’s favorite.

It got so bad Cilan got the chills whenever it was near or lurking. Even after a trainer caught the wild cat, the fear of Purrloin remained.

“Loin?” It looked at Cilan and the greenette ducked behind Ash.

“Well a captured Purrloin will be more chill.” Cress said and he gave his new mon a scratch under the chin.

Cilan was a tad embarrassed showing this side of himself in front of Ash. ‘Dang it…’ Suddenly Ash’s hand came to rest on his head, and a wave of calm washed over him.

“It’s okay…” Ketchum didn’t judge him, he’s met many people with phobias over different types of Pokemon, Misty was scared of Bug Types, a nurse Joy he met was scared of Water Types. He met kids who were scared of all Pokemon after having a bad experience with one or two of them in the past. “I’ll admit I had a bad experience with an Aerodactyl, it tried to eat me, so when I’ve met others I got really scared deep down.”

Fear was a tricky thing, and depending on the trauma it may be something that never goes away. Sometimes the fear between trainer and Pokemon can be helped, and their issues hashed out. It went both ways as there had been Pokemon who had bad experiences with humans and it made them distrust, fear, and even hate humans.

There’s even been enemy Pokemon who’s been used to hurt him, but he’s never held ill will to the monsters themselves. “Please relax…”

Ash reached out to Purrloin with his aura. “Hmm, I see, you aren’t quite human, interesting. Tell the green one that he need not worry. I don’t steal from family.” Ketchum relayed the message. “Though he does seem the type that’d be fun to tease.” He didn’t relay that part.

Cilan calmed down, but was still a little tense. It would be something he’d have to get used to. “Great job on the capture Cress!” The bluenette blushed, a shiver racing up his spine, his arousal increased. “Want your reward?”

Even still she didn’t want to train with Ash, Chili, or even Cress. “If you’re so battle crazy why don’t you battle yourself!”

“It has been awhile since we did that.”

Ash had his mons attack him. It was crazy, even before he had become a satyr, but Ash was able to get an understanding of a move by seeing it first hand. As a monster he was able to toughen out the stronger attacks.

Tepig learned Rollout, replacing Odor Sleuth. It was a good combo move with Defense Curl. “Tepig with this, we can have you learning something special the Spin Guard!” He’d seen it used before with Whitney’s Miltank and Bugsy’s Scyther, to name a few.
