Chapter 21 Toren vs Mist

The next morning it was time to do some special training to prepare Toren for his gym battle. They left the city and found a nice secluded spot, where they could embrace nature. Toren was basically naked, except for his lab coat.

Ivy faced off with Butterfree, the bug type used Sleep Powder which had no effect on Ivy, and he used Stun Spore. Butterfree countered that with Gust, blowing the spores back and dealing damage, Ivy then healed using Synthesis.

Ponyta and Jam battled hard clashing with moves and dealing damage. “Pan if you would!” Toren called out his Fairy type.

He used Life Dew to heal the Poison and Fire type so they could have a prolonged battle.

Ash’s Poliwhirl battled Rumble, he damaged him with Double Slap, and Rumble would heal using Absorb or by getting hit with Poliwhirl’s new move Bubblebeam. Thanks to Dry Skin the water move could heal.

If Poliwhirl’s health got too low Pan would come in with a healing Life Dew.

Roots and Beedrill mastered their moves, so Ash took Toren to the next step of learning the Agile and Strong style. Brock noticed that those two mastered their moves faster than the others. ‘Is it because of the human seed?’

Under Ash’s instruction Roots learned the difference between the Strong and Agile style. His Strong Style Vine Whip, unleashed two thick vines to attack, Beedrill used Harden to take hits and hone his ability. Agile Style allowed Roots to unleash four vines to attack at once, the power was reduced but the barrage of hits more than made up for it.

All his training till now paid off as he mastered the move. The two started battling it out in a contest of String Shot and Sleep Powder.

Pikachu wasn’t being idle, as he foraged for berries, since they were training moves they needed to recover as much as possible.

Brock approached Ash. “Beedrill and Roots, they are mastering moves much faster, why?”

“That’s because they have ingested human semen, and awakened their potential.” Ash said with a smile. “It’s not impossible for a Pokemon to master moves without it, just takes more time.”

“I see.”

“That’s not all, Toren has evolved in his own way by taking Pokemon seed as well.”

“What do you mean?”

“Let’s just say, the benefits are not just one way.” Ash winked at him and continued to oversee the training.

It left Brock with a lot to think about. When he had time he took to reading his special guidebooks to understand himself a bit more. There was a big question he wanted to ask Ash, but was almost scared of the answer.

“I think everyone’s making good progress, right Pikachu?” The mouse monster cooed happily in agreement.

His trainer was something special, and he was making waves in the world, even if it was just one step at a time. All the mons on his team were getting stronger, and their bond was growing by the day.

After a change up in dance partners, they took a break for lunch and it was almost time for their match.

Roots had mastered all his moves, training with Ivy and Bloom using Sleep Powder and Leech Seed, they in turn used their moves. Ivy managed to master Vine Whip, while Bloom Mastered Poison Powder.

Jam didn’t master a move, but he did learn Toxic Spikes which replaced his Fury Attack.

Rumble’s determination allowed him to transcend his limits and he learned Giga Drain, which replaced Absorb.

Pan for his part hadn’t mastered a move but was praised for all their help.

Even though everyone was working hard Toren had his choices for his gym match. He didn’t know how many battles they were gonna have but he was gonna go with a full grass line up.

Round 1 was Goldeen vs Ivy

The water type was a fast swimmer, he was hoping that speed would help him avoid the grass type moves. Goldeen was able to use a Flying type move which he hoped would help gain favor.

Ivy was on one of the many platforms the gym provided. Toren was keeping his eyes on the water. “Keep cool Ivy, wait for him to come to you.”

“Well if you’re not gonna attack first, I will Goldeen use Horn Attack!” Goldeen jumped from the water, horn glowing as it dove at Ivy, only for the Grass type to dodge out of the way. “Again!”

“Bell bell bell!” Ivy dodged the attacks, using his noodly body to dodge, flip, and roll out of the way.

“What are those movements?” Ash and Brock smirked.

Roots had sparred with Ivy along with Ash’s Pokemon, he learned how to bob and weave using his natural assets. He developed his Evasiveness which was rare for Pokemon to hone.

Goldeen could jump and dive all it wanted but it wasn’t gonna land a hit like that. “Let’s go fishing, Agile Vine Whip!” Ivy launched a vine, it tore through the water and surging forth.

The water type tried to flee, only to be snatched and hauled out of the water. “No way!” Goldeen got slammed. “Goldeen use Peck!”

Their lips glowed and they went for an attack.

“Strong Vine Whip!” He raised one of his legs, and it surged with Grass energy, and brought it down, and with one hit Goldeen was knocked out.

‘So fast…’ Yes it was super effective, but damn.

Even Mist’s sister’s were shocked. “Looks like I’ll have to bring out the big guns!” He called out Starmie.

Toren recalled Ivy. “Roots let’s do this!” His starter took the platform.

Starmie was in a bit of trouble, the only moves it knew was Water Gun, Rapid Spin, Bubblebeam, and Swift. Thanks to the dirty trick his sisters pulled he had evolved his Staryu too early and got a real earful from their father. Now Mist was hoping TM’s could break the gap in move abilities. ‘These style moves or whatever they are, even some simple moves were able to pack more power and ability. I must find out their secrets!’ For now….

Mist had changed Starmie’s move set, replacing Rapid Spin with another move. ‘I got this at the Pewter City Gym.’

Starmie tried to keep it’s distance using it’s long range moves, but Water Gun and Bubblebeam weren’t very effective, and while Swift could land hits, not for long. “Agile Vine Whip!”

Four Vines came out and began to clash with the stars, the moves colliding in a flurry. “Use Razor Leaf!” Toren called and Roots unleashed his own long range attack.

“Use Bide!” Starmie began to glow, taking the hits as he built up energy.

“That’s one of your gym’s TM’s right?” Brock nodded.

“But Starmie’s move set is odd.” He wondered. As a breeder he knew that evolving a Pokemon too early could limit their growth. Some trainers push their mons to evolve even by level up when the mon isn’t ready and it can cause behavior problems after.

Starmie was doing it’s best. They were taking super effective hits but were holding on as it built up power. “That Starmie is tough, moves aside.” Ash was impressed. The mon didn’t have a face but Ash could read it’s aura.

The gem began to flash, showing it was close to fainting. ‘Starmie isn’t gonna last much longer.’ He began to panic, but Starmie’s Bide became fully charged. “Go!”

A beam was fired out surging out and hitting Roots dead on. He took the blast, managing to hold on, for Toren’s sake.

Both mons were at their limit, but Roots managed one final move Seed Bomb! He blasted Starmie and sent them flying. The light in their gem faded showing they had fainted. “Starmie no!”

He had to return them. “You were great.”

Toren returned Roots. “You did great, have a good rest.” He knew even with Leech Seed, Roots couldn’t last another battle.

Mist’s next Pokemon was Staryu, and just at a glance Ash could tell this Staryu was strong.

“Bloom come forth!” Out came the Oddish. “Mega Drain!”

Green energy whipped out and connected with Staryu it turned red draining away his energy.

Staryu fired a Water Gun and it was strong, even managing to push Bloom back and into the water. “Od od od!”

“Now Recover!” The water type glowed with gold energy, allowing their energy to be restored.

Bloom managed to get back to the platform and then came a sharp Rapid Spin. He tried to recover with Mega Drain. “Recover!” Staryu gathered it’s energy shaking off the damage.

“Strong Poison Powder!” Bloom spun, releasing a cyclone of Poison spores, with the strong style the poison was even more effective, Staryu became badly poisoned.

Now Mist and Staryu were on the clock but Mist wasn’t aware of how badly Staryu was poisoned before it was too late.

Bloom fought off Water Gun with Acid.

Staryu dodged the Mega Drain by diving under water but time ran out, Recover couldn’t cure the poisoning and it was taking more of his strength by the minute.

They fainted and Mist was down to his last Pokemon. Seel was technically the gym’s pokemon but he had a close bond with Mist.

His sisters were righting him off, but Mist knew plenty about Seel’s strength. Once he was in the water he swam as fast as a jet. Mist called for an Aurora Beam, an Ice Type move that was super effective on a Grass type like Bloom.

Toren called for a Mega Drain, but Seel dove under water and dodged. He fired another beam, a rainbow of colors that was Super effective. Ash had to admit, Mist was good, he almost wished he had battled him instead of the sisters.

“Headbutt!” Seel rammed Bloom and knocked him out.

“You did great Bloom take a good long rest.” Bloom was returned and he called out Ivy next.

This match wasn’t gonna be like Goldeen’s. Seel had an ability Ice Body, not only did it increase their health in Hail and Snow, but if they are hit with a physical move there’s a chance that the opponent gets Frozen.

Ivy tried his best but a couple of hits left him Frozen, giving Seel time to set up an Aqua Ring. “Aurora Beam!”

Seel blasted Ivy and he got knocked out.

“Wow, I didn’t know Seel was so tough.” Daisy said while the others nodded.

“I didn’t realize Mist was so tough.”

‘This is it, his Ivysaur can’t battle, all he’s got is one Pokemon left, I can do this. I can win!’

“Rumble I choose you!”

“BUG!” Mist screamed.

The whole audience sweat dropped. Ash face palmed, he had almost forgotten. They had met Mist before and he had freaked when seeing Paras the last time. “Seel get that creepy thing!”

Rumble got annoyed, he hopped up and down angrily.

Seel charged in for a Headbutt, but Rumble dodged. “Aqua Jet!” Mist called, and he surged in a current of water ready to ram into Rumble.

This was a mistake as Dry Skin negated the damage, Rumble was ready, dousing Seel in poison. “Use Venoshock!”

The move did more damage and Seel was looking bad, even with Aqua Ring his health was dwindling. “We aren’t gonna lose, use Aurora Beam!”

Rainbow light fired from Seel’s horn and struck Rumble doing a lot of damage. Rumble growled, getting mad. “Use Giga Drain!”

Seel tried to dodge but the energy surged even through the water and caught him, it was super effective.

When the water type resurfaced he had spirals in his eyes. “The winner is Toren!”

Ash cheered and Brock applauded. The whole stadium was in a state of awe, the battle was amazing. Daisy was stunned this applause was more than some of their shows received.

Mist slumped down. ‘I lost...I couldn’t…’

He had to give Toren the Cascade Badge and one of the Gym’s TM’s. He picked Rain Dance. “Thank you for the battle it was great.”

Toren offered his hand, and out of respect Mist took it. “Yeah it was.”

Even his sisters agreed. “Mist, why don’t you take Seel with you.”

“What...really?”

“Yeah, you really showed us his potential, and maybe we have been too hard on you.”

“If you wanna challenge us we’ll be waiting.” Mist nodded.
