NEW IN ALIVE V63

REALISM

A lot of focus lately has been on trying to make the eyes look more realistic. Emphasis on trying! It's complicated but we're getting closer. In this update there are many changes for that including a new system that makes the models look around more as if thinking when talking. The models will also look around more when they move their head around fast, like when dancing, to make them look less robotic and target-locked.

These are not new but there are a few settings that allow customizing how much the eyelids move in case the effect is too strong on some models:

ANIMATION

There's animations that can be played directly from Alive starting this version. They require my Animations Pack that I posted a while ago.

DEPENDENCIES

Alive is now using morphs directly from morph packs rather than including them directly. It was like this in past versions of Alive too but it worked in specific circumstances, certain combos of morph packs would make morphs stack up and cause all sorts of problems. I think I figured it out and it should work ok now. Having too many morphs also was affecting vam performance and I wanted to get rid of the thousand morphs that I had in the Alive var.

ALIVE doesn't have any dependencies that are required, it works without these vars too. But adding the extra packs will make Alive a bit better. You can find them at the bottom of the post. They're all free addons from the vam hub. There's also a Dependencies app in the UI where they're listed and show as green if they're found, or red if not:

VR UI

VR UI should be a bit better starting with v63. Previously, toggling the UI on and off would sometimes cause misclicks, things to be enabled or disabled unintentionally. Now when the trigger is pressed, the UI locks and doesn't permit any clicks, so that the combo Trigger + A or Trigger + X  is safer to use. Also, scrolling the UI will now work with VAM's default VR locomotion system. If the focus is on the ui and you move the thumbstick up and down, it should scroll the UI without moving the player around anymore. There's also a roomscale mode for the VR UI, to have it stay in place rather than follow you around.

CHARACTERS

Creating and interacting with characters should be a little more straight-forward and intuitive now. To create an ALIVE character you can just select any person in the scene and click create character. The character will have the look of that person that was selected. AI chats are now just with characters present in the scene. There's also a new setting in Alive Settings > Chat to control how often the AI gets to respond to touches.

IMPORTANT

Work in progress! Lots of things still to fix and to improve. If you notice anything problematic or if you have any suggestions, just let me know, all feedback is appreciated. There will likely be a v64 in a few days with some small fixes and missing translations for the new settings.

Outstanding update, some small changes that make a big difference

Khrull

Hey thanks for the release! I was playing around with the voice chat the other night and was wondering if Silero could be used as a voice generator? You know, for us plebs that dont want to pay for it voice generation and want something a little better than Microsoft.

SPQRAeternum

Hi, I remember I tried it, Bark tts for sure too, and they were way too slow. I'm pleb too and I'd love nothing more than to get rid of the elevenlabs part and have alive be 100% offline and independent, but I don't want it to be just a tech demo thing for people with 4090s. I found something very cool that would work, I have it running in Unity, but it doesn't work with vam because it's old so I'm tinkering with that. I'll try to take another look at silerotts and see if the speed is decent

Anonymous

any way xtts can be used? its not too bad in terms of power. if you do it right.

Khrull

Ah I see, I've not much experience with these and have not thought much of speed differences or comparing them. Thanks

SPQRAeternum

negative on xtts, license for it is for non-commercial purposes only regarding extensions, lots of things can be added directly to oobabooga but getting things to work in vam takes a lot, things won't magically connect. Models won't speak or react to audio playing in some other thread in the background, isolated from vam. To make things work it would require altering OB extensions code which again could be problematic due to licensing. Alive only connects to their API and similar APIs to get text AI responses through that.

Khrull

Ah I get it. The very reason I thought of it was because I was using it in a similar VaM plug in that uses a patreon access gate too. But I get being a little paranoid on the legal side of things. Just cause they do it doesn't make it legal.

SPQRAeternum

Licenses are very messy. Silero was free to use a while ago. Then they switched it to Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike over a bit of drama, getting salty at some companies. Basically how some vam creators (with me in the frontline too) put CC-BY-NC licenses on some vars just because we're salty and we don't want to see vamx getting even richer off our work and being disrespectful in the process. When I've seen vamx talking on steam about 'their' haptic feature and how they'll look into updating their (my) dll and how they'll do this and do that, when they need meshedvr to write their own code, the first thing I did was to switch the free at the time Alive to my made-up license CC-BY-NoVAMX. So I respect their hissyfit Others might not know about it, it's unusual for resources to change licenses that dramatically. Or just go with plausibile deniability. the drama for those interested: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31807201

Khrull

Ah I see, I did not know such things. I wasn't talking about vamx btw. I've not tried that one and just recently learned about it.

Please don't get rid of elevenlabs lol, I am paying for it specifically because the v2 voice cloning sounds so real, I now have my real-life wife fully in VAM with her permission.
