2024-02-26 19:05:26 This set of episodes pretty much perfectly encapsulated my love/Hate relationship with this show the concept of how the Gate works creating a world full of otherworlders is ridiculously cool. What man cannot have his blood boil in a battle between dragons and jet fighters/artillery? Also leilei's combo of magic and science is so well conceived and written.... and yet it can't resist the overt support for imperialism in the other world, disregarding every non-japanese country in our world, cheap and offputting sexualization and gags including the worst of all trope of Itami's "slave", and turning Itami into a reluctant Harem protag.

There was a poll on discord, 1st Luke asked what should he do as a reward for 1k sub goal 2nd people created several options to vote for 3rd only 5 options went into the poll, some were samples with 5 animes: -Shojo/Josei sampler > 31% Winner -Anime Kahoots quiz > 16% -Anime themed Tier list(s) > 12% -Sports anime sampler > 18% -Psychological anime sampler > 22% The Shojo/Josei sampler had: -Kimi ni Todoke -Cardcaptor Sakura -Kids on the slope -Yona of the Dawn - ? (can't remember the last one) So we will watch 1st episodes of these 5 animes. And I hope we continue watching them in near future.

I know some folks don't like how this show glorifies Japanese imperialism and makes Japan look like the best military in the world, but given that the USA (where I'm from) has done a lot of the same in its own media, it's actually kind of fun for me to see another country doing it. The maker of this show apparently thinks well of their military, and I enjoy seeing their perspective.

2024-02-28 08:35:43 making your nations military look good is not a problem at all. It's when you combine that with giving every other countries military negative, bad motivations that don't hold up to logical scrutiny where it becomes a problem for me.

Sure and this show is definitely touting the line of nationalism pretty closely but lets not pretend most western media doesn't also portrays Russian/Chinese military as incompetent all the time.

It's a bit of a shame the anime didn't emphasize how Leleil was able to penetrate the dragon's skin, in the manga that moment was very hype, as she used the principles from our world (our weapons and her chemistry studies), propulsing those heroes' swords with her magic instead exactly like bullets. Enabling Tuka to do some damage with that lightning attack later (the stuck swords made him feel the lightning from inside). Even if in the end it's the bomb alone that kills it.

It may sound wild, but even in our world there are democratic countries that have diplomatic relations with empires like Russia or China. "disregarding every non-japanese country in our world" - This is normal, replace Japan with the United States and the producer with Hollywood and you will get the same thing 😂 I agree with the other negative aspects

overt support for imperialism include: claiming land on the other side of the Gate as "part of Japan". Taking full rights over resources without compensation in the other world by taking advantage of their ignorance etc. A bunch of free space for resource extraction was basically the wet dream of Japanese imperialists in the lead-up to WW2 and the world of the GATE is often spoken of as a way to achieve exactly those ends with no self-reflection

I'll be straight. The Dark Elves had a majority of their village people burned to death by the Flame Dragon. They are low in population and young people to produce off spring. Yet they chose the the young ones to go fight with itami who are at the age to get married and have kids. Why send the youth off with a greater risk to die instead of the older warriors who can't produce off spring anymore? That doesn't make sense to me. The Dark Elves are pretty dumb on how they want to survive especially against a force of nature such as a Flame Dragon. Sure they killed it, but at what cost? The last few remaining young warriors of the Dark Elf tribe? Like really?

Also it's shame they skipped a whole arc at the holy city where Hardy resides. Had it not been skipped this would have set up for future seasons. But we aren't getting another season because the Holy City Arc was cut.

Well it's not too far from the truth. China is always looking to take more land and aggressively tries to claim places that their ancestors has step on as their own despite not even making good use of their own land. US has literally become a meme of going to war for oil at this point. All the big power is this world would go crazy over a land of free resources especially if the gate open up in their own land.
