WAIT... WHAT JUST HAPPENED??????

Here is the FULL and UNBLURRED reaction to MADOKA MAGICA Episode 3!!

Enjoy!!

Comments

Polak Zakolak

This is where the fun begins <3

Nakirium

Welcome to the BIRTH place of “The three episode rule”

Szayel H

The real madoka magica experience begins

Nate Ming

Mami's my favorite magical girl, head and shoulders above the rest

Von Yoosten

Never clicked on something so quickly in my Life!

BlekDimon

Excited to watch this episode. First time when I saw this one certain scene, I got chills all over my body.

MrGaldor123

When I first watched this, I was suspicious of Mami until her heart-to-heart with Madoka, then I thought she was genuine, and I really liked her. Well, that didn't last long... Looking forward to the rest of the reaction!

Animeguy1101

The reason people wanted you to react to the endings is because episode 1 & 2 have a different ending to this one and onwards to represent the big tonal shift in the anime. I think you should react to the original Japanese Digimon openings. I made playlist for all the Digimon Japanese openings so you don’t miss any. I really recommend you check them out. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlHvRFmrcTI9o6BQf_aR9gDRrlUiKZX6P

Von Yoosten

He actually managed to skip the Credits that he DIDN'T know and now doesn't skip the ones he has heard before. Damn what Timing... The whole Effect that People were looking for is gone now lol....

Ohms

I'm sorry but the fact that you (correctly) felt that the vibes were off until like 10 seconds before the moment your suspicions were confirmed had me *cackling*.

Aaren YASS

Insert the "now the anime really starts" comment. The ED is now showing the truth of Madoka Magica. -

Nakirium

To give some context and better understanding: Madoka Magica is very effectively taking advantage of the “magical girl” genre that people were so comfortable with. BEFORE this anime aired, all magical girl shows were cute and uplifting and hopeful in appearance, very similar to how the first 2 episodes portrayed themselves to be. And the fact that this was an anime-original project, NOBODY could expect what happened in this episode. The creators DELIBERATELY advertised this show to be cute and wholesome. DELIBERATELY made sure to keep “magical girl” fans comfortable for the first 2 and a half episodes. DELIBERATELY made a cute and fluffy ED only to snatch it away and give us Kalafina’s darker-sounding ‘Magia’ instead. Because nobody had any prior expectations, the creators made SURE to pull that rug from under you as hard as they could possibly pull. This is the real show. The real show is full of darkness, despair, and a bit of hope sprinkled in. This. Is Madoka Magica.

Von Yoosten

The big Thing about the Anime is that this Twist isn't all there is to it. In Case you weren't caught off-guard, the Rest of the Story now rides the Wave of the Story, not just the Emotions. It doesn't bank EVERYTHING on that one Scene like Gakkougurashi does.

BlekDimon

The reason why people wanted you not to skip the endings is because first two episodes have really chill and overall happy vibes ending, and then in episode 3 comes this one that has obviously quite different vibe from the previous one. Maybe you didn't understand that because you already reacted to Ending 2, but seeing that before episode 3 is kind of a spoiler. Also, pretty sure you never watched ending 1 to begin with.

BlekDimon

I mean, there are darker and more serious Mahou Shoujo that came before Madoka Magica, like Princess Tutu, but they are not THIS much messed up and dark.

Nakirium

as much as i love gakkou gurashi, i do agree with you (at least for the anime) i chose to read some of the manga around that time and it was pretty dark and made me care for the characters a bit more. i never finished it because i was still busy with school and work, but now i kinda wanna go back and read it

Luca Bellan

Trust your guts more Luke ahah

Nakirium

i’m just giving insight for someone who’s never seen magical girl anime before. While yes, Princess Tutu is famous for also being darker, I don’t think it was as popular as many people thought it to be. I’ve seen a lot of CCs who are heavy on Mahou Shoujo, but have only seen the obviously popular ones like Sailor Moon, Pretty Cure (all of them), Cardcaptors, Shugo Chara, etc. One of them is even currently reacting to Madoka as well. So I think Princess Tutu just didn’t have as much of a reach as Madoka Magica was able to

Nate Ming

Honestly, after this and Re:Zero I think you should watch something actually light-hearted and chill There's plenty of anime that are legitimately for adults that also aren't out there to just fuck you up

Linikins

I guess this is a good time to mention that Madoka was written by the same guy who wrote Fate/Zero.

Muligan Shinzuo

Whaat? We would NEVER recommend sad heart wrenching (or messed up) animes :P

BlekDimon

I actually know a lot of people that watched Princess Tutu, it's definetly more popular than Shugo Chara. Also what does "CCs" mean? Never heard of this abbreviation and google says nothing about it. But obviously it's popularity is nowhere near to Madoka and especially Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor since they were streamed on TV in a lot of countries all over the world.

Nakirium

oh my bad, CCs is short for “content creators” and fair yeah, people got different experiences with anime so its hard to be objective about popularity in some case. But yeah, there’s no denying Sailor Moon and Cardcaptors

BlekDimon

I would actually prefer him to just watch some fun comedy anime. I think Slice of Life and Iyashikei can be a bit boring to do as a reaction.

Pete Bickmore

For context, in the pre-Madoka Magica world, the magical girl shows had very similar tropes. Young girl becomes a hero to save the world after being approached by a small magical animal. often with their friends becoming magical girls as well. So when this aired, although there was small questions of is everything quite as it seems, no one expected it to go this way. There weren’t really many anime out there that subverted the viewers expectations. The only other one was Evangelion. Nowadays, it’s become a popular thing to do. And because of this show for me, or in your case, Made in Abyss, you are trained to always be wary of these cute shows. I love re-watching this show as much as when I watched it the first time. Luke, this is only the start of what makes this show great.

Anonymous

And we finally hit episode 3. Mami’s favorite type of coffee always was a decappuccino

Keith Merrington

If you want something cute and heart warming to watch (for a change), maybe a good time for K-On! ? Or maybe Dragon Maid for some cute light hearted comedy.

AppyBappy

You should play or watch a playlist of Doki Doki Literature Club. No reason other than a cute game about literature :)

K

The beginning of the end 😈

Michał Koczorowski

I will explain why we asked you to not skip the credits (and why you don't skip openings and endings in anime in general.) Madoka magica starts off as a cute anime, with some disturbing undertones, hints that there is a darkness behind this cute show. However, both the opening and the ending are just cute, nothing more. However, in episode 3, after Mami dies, the ending does a complete switcheroo, and they reveal that this dark, evil song is the true ending song of the anime. The curtains are revealed, no more hiding behind the cuteness, Madoka reveals it is going to be a dark and heavy anime. It is very rare for animes to switch endings without a season or a mid-season break. However, it is EVEN more rare for animes to switch endings so quickly. That's why this switch, and this confirmation about the darkness of the anime are big moments among fans. So i will repeat what i have said many times in your comments. If you want to experience animes fully, DO NOT skip openings and endings. You can talk to us during them, but at least for Patreon, do watch them and let them play. This will be important, especially when you get around to animes like JoJo's bizarre adventure.

BlekDimon

I think it's kinda ruining to recommend a game like that below this series and he possibly couldn't be folled another time, but nonetheless it's a great game and he should play it.

Abe J

I think this episode missed the mark slightly by not being way more graphic in that moment. IMO, it should have been really brutal, like what the hell am I watching. Took an arm, screaming, then chomp. The juxtaposition of horror to kiddie cutie or fun fantasy to reality.

Matej Maxa

Like other people have explained, the reason to pay attention to the ED was that the first two episodes had a cutesy innocent ending and after this the anime switched to its true dark ending. Also, there is a special ending for episode 9 and it is recommended to actually read the lyrics (at least a couple first lines) of the OP in episode 10. However, people tend to make a bigger deal of this than it really is. Yes, paying attention to OP and ED does add to the experience of Madoka Magica, but so do many other smaller things ranging from philosophy, literature, language to the names of the OST tracks, not to mention prior knowledge of the magical girl genre, so there is no possible way to appreciate everything on your first watch. At least I know I did not. But I did fall in love with the anime and rewatched it multiple times, and I feel like there is always something new to notice and uncover.

Nate Ming

Oh yeah, I'd definitely prefer a comedy Something like Bocchi the Rock or Golden Boy

Gun Bunny

I think it was illustrative, really, all those hopes and dreams just... gone. All it takes is one mistake, one missed clue, one moment of underestimating your opponent and you're dead without even a corpse for your family to mourn. That's heavy shit for a combat veteran, let alone a ten year old girl.

Omar Roque

Looks like Mami got A-Head of herself....get it....decapitated joke OMG! :(

JOSHUA A STERRETT

I've been waiting eagerly for your reaction to this episode ever since you started reacting to this show. You did not disappoint.

JOSHUA A STERRETT

"I didn't expect it to go from zero to ten so quickly." Oh, Luke. We're still a long way's off from "ten."

LordDanzo

I think a big reason why he doesn't do it, is because he would need to edit it out for youtube. And since he edits the videos himself, it would be less time to watch other anime. I agree though, I would prefer if he didn't skip OPs and EDs.

Hamza Stiti

Hey, yes I am watching along for the first time and I had the same feeling you do that there is some weird tone to the show which is making me interested

Some0neElse

I might be wrong here but theres nothing to stop any of the girls to wish for Mami to be alive and i think thats what would've happened if Homura wasnt there.

Sorcerer

HE SAW EPISODE 3!!!

Sorcerer

The new ending song signals a shift in tone of the series.

Laura

I remember in one ocasion you asked in youtube if there was an anime that started all cute and the took a super dark turn and almost all the comments recomended this one and I think that is the reason that everyone told you to watch it.

Laura

Also this anime was targeted to all the girls that looked the magical girl anime in the 90's and were adults when this one was published given a different perspective to series like sailor moon or card captor sakura and others

mjaomjao2

The thing people were saying is probably because the ED for the first 2 episodes is a happy song and then the ED for ep 3 is what it is.

Emilis2023

You're scarred into thinking this show would take it's dark turn from the shows we've recommended to you before. For me, and I assume a lot of us, this was one of the primary culprits of scaring us into not trusting happy looking anime in the first place.

Slipstream

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the runes yet. I don't Luke has noticed them.

Michał Koczorowski

I get it, He wants to give as much of this content onto youtube as well. But with OPs and EDs, it's impossible anyway, so just cut out these sections entirely. That way it becomes just 2 simple cuts, which shouldn't take more than 2 minutes to do. He could also, when watching, do a clap at the beginning and end of the OP and ED, just so he can see from the audio wave exactly where openings begin and end. Would be even faster

Emilis2023

Also, hang in there. It's really weird to be sure, but you're asking all the right questions. It's on of those shows were if you pay attention, things fall into place extremely well by the end.

Michał Koczorowski

oh of course, there is a lot to every work that you can experience, much more than on a single playthrough. However, openings and endings are part of the show itself, Anime is meant for TV, and on TV, you can't skip anything, so you are meant to watch OPs and EDs. And yes, this switch is not THAT big a deal. But overall, you are losing a little bit of value of anime, not just in this case. I mean, i cannot imagine watching jojo, and NOT experiencing the epic "Za Warudo" from OP 4 version 2 (or any other of the switches they do). Or watching Gravity Falls (which takes influence from anime), and not seeing the Weirdmageddon switch.

Emilis2023

Oh, on another note you were mentioning how bizarrely nice the hospital room looked. I used to thing the setting of the world was slightly in the future because of all the advanced looking stuff you see. Particularly the school. I'm wondering now if it's more like a world with a fictional amount of abundance.... perhaps the result of someone's wish in the past. None of the tech shown looks like things out of our reach on a technological level, just extremely extravagant.

Vex Valor

The person at the beginning is not a relative. He is the boy Sayaka has a crush on. He is one of their classmates, but he is not in school right now because he is sick in the hospital. Sayaka wants to help him, but realistically is that a good idea? They are in middle school and this wish will be for the rest of Sayaka's life. Does he like her, too? And even if he did, would they still be together years down the road? If he knew she wished him better and must do that dangerous job for the rest of her life, wouldn't he feel like he has a moral obligation to stay with her? Is that healthy? There is a lot of questions that come with that wish. As for the ending credits, the songs are important because they sometimes change. Episode 1 and 2 had a different ending theme from 3. The ending theme was to trick into thinking this is your typical cute magical girl anime until Mami dies then you realize how dangerous it actually is. There will be more songs.

Kolben Mayushuuu

Luke predicting that Mami would die, later saying he's probably just overthinking this since we have already scarred him into thinking every anime character could die and that this show hasn't really shown anyone die so far, followed up by Mami dying a minute later couldn't have been better lmao

Anonymous

I dont know why but re-watcing this series with Luke is really enhancing the experience. Lets just binge this luke, otherwise the curiosity will eat you alive. Also one suggestion if you want to exponentially growth your subs, maybe react to Code Geass. Madoka and Code geass really has a special place in anime community, surely young and old weebs will eager to see new anime fan reacting to these masterpieces.

ArtKi

15:10 Am I watching this for the first time? No. but I've only watched up to episode 3. I'm trying to stay 1-3 episodes ahead. The *reason* I'm watching it is because you started reacting to it. I've noticed other reactors I like have done it or are doing it now and that piqued my interest. so far, so good! -------- Ref Mami for the theatrical release on a Madoka Magica movie they printed Mami on the movie ticket. she was placed so that when the usher tore the movie ticket - the tear went through her neck. so yeah, this is that kind of show.

ArtKi

Yeah, something light-hearted and fluffy... like Narutaru.

Tatersalad666

People were asking for you to react to the ending because it is different from the first two episodes. Basically, the first ending is really happy, and makes you think the show is a standard magical girl show, aka super lighthearted and carefree, and this ending is much darker and reveals the true nature of the show. At the time this aired, it caught everyone off guard. Making a magical girl show where someone dies, and in such a brutal way, really hadn't been done before.

Dj

The wormy witch thingy reminded me of powerpuff girls cartoon style . I dont hate it. Its a very interesting combination on the animation style.

Arctic

the credits song is a BANGEWR thats why we want you to watch it lol

Louispul5

This is why you always watch the credits, Luke. You didn't see the end credits of episode 1+2 before seeing how it changed in the credits of episode 3... Also like half the animes ever made just continue the plot and put the credits over it while it's happening.

Louispul5

That and it's entirely different from the end credits of episode 1 and 2...

Louispul5

didn't princess tutu come out after this though? I remember hearing a bunch of people say "If you liked Madoka Magica, you'll like this."

Nakirium

nah princess tutu came out like 9 years before madoka magica ever did

Louispul5

Nah, he needs to watch Guren Lagann! Something where you can push through anything because of sheer force of will!

Louispul5

Nah this show is meant to be watched repeatedly. Your idea works if you only watch it once. But you'll see why you're supposed to watch it again later. Mami dying was... not that important to the viewpoint character.

Louispul5

a world with less entropy you might say. Where things don't wear down and break.

Sakomi Arorim

While Madoka Magica was indeed not the first dark magic girl/Mahou Shoujo series, it was the one that basically popularized dark Mahou Shoujo

Anonymous

Definitely the biggest thing that this anime did was be one of (if not the) first to truly take a genre known for being happy and positive and subvert the expectations with the sudden twist. It is why so many people stand by the "3 episodes" rule on how long to give an anime to see if it is worth watching or not. Certainly, there are other anime out there that have amazing twists like this and are arguably better done in certain ways. This one is just one of the primary pushes to the industry that influenced everything to a new level in mature story telling.

Sakomi Arorim

For some anime like this one, skipping the opening and ending of an episode can indeed causes one to miss certain things But there are also openings/endings that just spoil everything (some might say) Luckily though most anime openings and endings also show content that will not be shown outside of that opening/ending, and for people who do not know, would not know what part of an opening is a spoiler or not until said spoiler happens in the series as for a good reason to skip openings & endings (after seeing it once) while skipping them only saves like 3 minutes per episode and a few minutes for editing Those few minutes saved would be over an hour already after just 20 episodes and for content creators that is a lot of time so it might be better for him to skip them after seeing them one time unless with series like this were we could just tell him which episodes to not skip the opening and/or ending

The Large Amoeba

Your going to miss so much plot if you don't switch to the movies. The movies ARE the series edited together with extra context as well as the actual ending.

Sakomi Arorim

I agree with you Gun Bunny (although I do not think Mami had living parents as she was shown to be in a car crash this episode before she made her wish) but to clarify they are not ten year olds they are in middle school which in japan starts at 12-13 for first years 13-14 for second years (Madoka Kaname is here) 14-15 for third years (Mami Tomoe was here) after that they would go to high school also for me the scene was fine as it was, kinda shows a cold reality about her dying and no time to really think about that or mourn (at least not at that moment they started mourning her at the end of the episode)

Sakomi Arorim

Abe Jensen if the witch did not go for the head with their first bite killing Mami instantly, Mami might have survived and the witch would not risk such things. As for showing that scene but in more graphic/brutal ways I do not think that was possible (12 years ago) without revealing that the anime was that dark before that scene, as gore is hard to do in anime most of the time depending on age rating and on what time in the day it airs

Sakomi Arorim

one could argue that if you have not seen everything yet and only stay a few episodes ahead then you are kinda watching it for the first time :P as I watched the movies online I did not know until today that they did that with the tickets, that is quite an evil prank

Michał Koczorowski

I hear people proposing some lighthearted animes next. So i'm putting my hat in the ring.

Mike Baker

There are things cut out of the first two movies, too. And I find the pacing in the movies is a little bit off. One thing (of many) that makes the TV series great are how each episode is story-boarded out, and some of the cliffhangers. The movies are good to watch, but I would recommend people watch the movies as a second watch-through or a refresh/rewatch.

Aaren YASS

We've been saying! Especially since he watched death note. I think it was in a poll already

MoeBlargus

I highly recommend Ascendance of a Bookworm for your next watch. It is not only wholesome but fascinating and really well done, with great world-building and side characters.

Ttsukasa

Yeah but not many other girls are willing to put their necks out there to save people like Mami.

Harley Burnie

Sadly, if you've been skipping the end credits, the point is lost. There's a handful of anime that sweep your legs out from under you with the sheer, bottomless darkness that overtakes the story suddenly, and their end credits(and sometime opening) chage to reflect that. Luke, if you see this, go back and watch the credits from episode 1 or 2, though it magic will be lost if you've already seen this one(get it...magic..lost..she died!!!).

Harley Burnie

Anyone else wanna see Luke react to Magical Girl Raising Project?!? I'd LOVE that. It blew me away!

Renagale

I thought I remembered her being Eaten being much more graphic and not off screen

AchmodinIV SWE

I watch the episode before your reaction but i have not seen Madoka Magica outside of clips before

yuzu hibiki

same i remember her being eaten while her head was being crunched on and the show ended the episode there.

Lu C

I am watching this for 1st time... Generali I don't like this anime. The pushing them to become magical girls just screams 'It's a Trap!' (insert your favourite Admiral Akbar meme). But OST by Yuki Kajiura saves it for now.

Thamor

Yeah it's sad that he isn't watching openings and endings even in these single episodes that he records outside of twitch. So there isn't the twitch excuse for not watching them.

Thamor

I want to see him be oh finally happy story and then SURPRISE!

Thamor

Haha, you once again paused and told us that you think you are scarred, but you think this will not go that route...few moments later...shocked pikachu face.

Tom Boggess

now we get to the heart of the matter. you've seen what happened so here is what this show is: this is a deconstruction anime. The magical girl genre is all about high school girls going around and stopping bad guys. Happy and upbeat. Here we have a philosophical anime that is dark and depressing that takes all the tropes from traditional magical girl anime and says "eff that. lets go for depression" also the ending doesn't relate to madoka specifically. a lot of it relates to homura mostly

RudeusGrey4t

"They just moved on from it so quickly." Well, I think that's supposed to be representative of how actual combat works. If someone dies in front of you, no matter how messed up it is, there's no time to grieve. If someone doesn't act fast, the enemy will kill even more. After all, the enemy doesn't care about giving you room to process your shock and sadness.

CurseMark4Life

I watched half of the show when it first came out and never finished for whatever reason. So this will be my first full watch through of this series.

noah van den berg

same. i also only watched a couple of episodes, but then rnadomply decided to just stop watching it. so i'm really excited to finally finish watching it with luke

ChaosDragon

There is no plot being missed by watching the series. Madoka Magica is not an adaptation, it is an original anime. This IS the story exactly how it was intended to be enjoyed. Anything in the games, Manga, and movie retelling that isnt in the series itself is all added in after the fact.

Thanny

The reason they mention the credits is obviated by your bizarre habit of reacting to openings from animes you haven't watched. The whole point was that the first few episodes opened and closed with typical magical girl sequences - happy and/or girly music. Then this episode ends with a gut punch, and you get the dark end credits. Beyond that, you should avoid all opening and ending credit sequences until you've watched the anime season in full, because they nearly all contain spoilers. Some spoil future characters, or a change in the relationship of characters you've already met. Some spoil major events - the opening of Attack on Titan season 3 did this with the very first image.
