kireimochizuki

Rudy never lets an opportunity to pass him by 😆

Toasterfinal5

This is a totally random comment. That said, I initially had my doubts if I was going to enjoy this anime. Now? I’m all caught up with season 2. I really love this anime & happy I stuck to your principle to finish a show so that i may render a credible opinion of it.

Daniel Griffiths

... yes that was a goblin slayer reference lol

falugger1

I suggest you watch the season 1 ova before the next episode as it follows what eris did during this episode

Matheus Vitali

Dam Luke is sharp AF this episode

Orieng

Suggestions for Patreon Anime: - Higurashi - Goblin Slayer - Elfen Lied - The Promised Neverland - Summer Time Rendering

Adam Niemi

Make sure that you watch the special episode in between season 1 and 2!

ArtyGS1

the thing is, with our logic knowing rudy's reincarnation, we know he could have been better so he is kinda in the wrong, but we also have to keep in mind that paul is expecting his young son, not even teen at this age mind you, to be out looking for his family member? his son is not even highschool age yet, paul expectation is totally wrong here. that said, both side could be better, but i would say paul is totally in the wrong here. he just reunion with his first family member as we can see, and the first thing a dad choose to do is critisized his own missing for year and a half son why is he not better? first thing should be celebration.

Gai Valentine

In addition to the comments about Eris cooking for Rudy, in the light novel it’s explained that Geese didn’t wanna teach Eris because back in the day when he was with Paul’s party, he’s the one who taught Zenith how to cook and she cooked a meal for Paul and that’s what started their relationship which ultimately broke up the party and Geese blames himself for ruining it and doesn’t wanna do the same to their party.

Daniel Griffiths

a fair chunk of the kingdom got teleported its was a huge freak disaster

Tinkerlin

You gotta keep in mind how rough the Demon continent is before you judge Rudeus too harshly. Imagine being dropped into the middle of the Sahara (or even worse... the outback... *shudders*) with next to nothing on your back, slogging your way through the wilderness for an entire year, with monsters so deadly all around they make the most dangerous thing back home look like pets. Then you finally find someone you once knew and the first they they say is "why didn't you do more?". As someone with Asian parents this feeling resonats really well with me as there is this constant burden of never being enough. You get the grades? "You think life is just about grades? Why you never help around the house?" Help out? "Why you spend all day at home? Go out more!" Go out and do sports? "You think you can grow up without cooking ah?" Even if you take into account that he is an adult on the inside, he just came back from the literal harshed place in that world and in one piece. As for his detachment from his family... remember that they were the ones who sent him away, they sent him away at 7, I would be hard pressed to remember much from when I was that age, and his most recent years were spent with Eris to make money for sylphy, and even if they were busy they didn't even come for his 10th birthday. Relationships are a two way street and Rudeus isn't the only one to blame for the distance between him and the rest of his family.

Seith

To be honest, I think Luke is harsh on Rudy. First Rudy has no idea about the scale of the mana explosion since he was in the center, Luke himself didn't even know the scale so how should Rudy know. Which means Rudy just assumed his family was safe. Then, the second Rudy got on human territory, he wanted to write to his family (I'm not sure if a message from the demon continent would even reach human territory).

Gai Valentine

Also in the light novel, the woman in the bikini armor and the girl next to her were teleported to a land where they were captured and r*ped repeatedly and were traumatized and are now fearful of all men but Paul was helping them overcome that little by little. The woman in the bikini armor has a stronger will than the other girl and dresses like that to keep all the male attention on herself so the other girl didn’t feel like breaking down whenever she saw a guy. That’s why Paul punched Rudy for insinuating he was messing around with them. The light novel really goes in depth about things a lot of other characters went through and their POV.

Seith

And let's not forget that Rudy has only like 11 years experience in this world.

ArtKi

Ref the teleportation disaster It was bad. SPOILERS Every living thing within a wide range was teleported. Even plants.

Taiga

Rudeus dad is in depression, and fucked by alcohol. It's not like Paul went through more than Rudy. And true, Rudy hadn't it that hard, but it was still quite dangerous for him. Imagine if Ruijerd wasn't with them, it could go totally different. And they had their share of sad moments etc. too. He was talking with excitement, because the 'adventure' was new to him, and exciting, and through all of it, they managed to succeed.

KeanuofRivia

Rudy certainly messed up a lot of things, tho I still think it doesn't quite justify Paul's actions here. Firstly the place where Paul sent the letter to Rudeus, I'm pretty sure, was the Town related to when Ruijerd got smuggled in. They never went to the guild there. Secondly Rudy purposely told his story with a smile on his face to prevent his dad from worrying about how hard the journey was. He made it sound easy on purpose. Thirdly with Rudy at the center of the disaster there's not much chance of him knowing the scale of the explosion unless he researched it

Misteryk

it was not. Mushoku web novel was finished in 2015. i assume these specific chapters were written around 2013. goblin slayer manga started in 2016

Taiga

Yeah, he's like dumping his own duties/failures - looking for the family, on his own son, when it's clearly the FATHER's duty obviously. Afterall Rudy is a child and a son of the family, doesn't matter if he has talent or not. It's like asking your own son to earn money for the family, so the family could live.

Keith Merrington

Luke - some answers... Eris was interested in learning to cook from Geese because that's a way to do something useful and nice for Rudy. The scantily clad woman (Vierra) is actually the sister of the other woman covered from head to toe (Shierra - you may have missed her as you couldn't see her boobies). They were teleported and captured by bandits who sexually abused them. Shierra has PTSD from the trauma and so covers up to hide from the gaze of men, and Vierra protects her sister by showing as much flesh as possible to draw attention away from Shierra. Everyone in the Fittoa region were teleported by the mana disaster. To random places. Those holding onto others were teleported to the same place. Some were teleported far away and some not so far - so some made it back quite quickly to then help to look for others. A lot of people were killed by the teleportation (e.g. some reappeared high up in mid-air and died due to the fall) or by events where they ended up. When you say Rudy wasn't emotional enough, he was in shock and denial. He was so emotional that he threw up (out the window) - so I don't see where you are getting a lack of emotion from. I 100% disagree with you about Rudy vs Paul. Paul was mostly wrong. Rudy had no reason to suspect anyone else other than those at ground zero (Rudy, Eris & Ghislaine) were caught up in the mana disaster. He probably should have tried to make contact earlier (sent a letter via the adventurer's guild) but probably thought he was travelling homeward as fast as any letter. It was only when they decided to linger in Millishion (to make some money) that he set about writing a letter home (you saw him start to write it). So he didn't forget as much as delay it until he thought it necessary.

Arctic

the reunion is so out of left field and really adds so much depth to Rudy and Paul's characters its amazing. It makes things that happen later make more sense also.

ArtKi

Rudy's picture in his mind may have been a Goblin Slayer reference.

Daniel Griffiths

like you said the village was miles from the city, so he didn't even consider it reaching his family. he was at ground zero with no idea of how big the disaster was, a god contacted him and he was dropped onto the most dangerous continent on the planet with Eris to protect... i doubt it would cross my mind either lol Paul just met his 12yr old son for the first time in around 5 years and said do better

Madlen Stauffer

Both are in the wrong. Rudy by downplaing how hard his journey was and not thinking that what happend to him, happend to others. Paul in having to high expectation of Rudy, because prodigy. Paul is also not realy emotionaly stable and put all the blame on Rudy. But thise complexity is what makes MT so good.

ArtKi

watch it between s1 and s2. It has nothing to do with episode 17. 16 & 17 are like one long episode. The main point of the OVA is to introduce Cliff who doesn't show up again until s2.

Daniel Griffiths

i am enjoying i look forward to them every week:)

Tommy Jensen

Given what you said after the end of this episode, I'm looking forward to your reaction of the next episode.

Yu ShangHsin

Pretty much the entire territory was obliterated. The city, the village, everyone anywhere near that territory were involved in the disaster.

Yu ShangHsin

And Rudy thought he and Eris + maybe Ghislaine were the only ones getting teleported, because they were in the center of it. No reason for him to think otherwise I guess.

Yu ShangHsin

Also he just assumed Paul had protect everyone in the family. He hasn't even started to grasp how devastating the entire thing is.

Guilherme Vergne

At the start scene, eris wanted geeze to teach her to cook because she wants to treat rudy, at the novel this was quite relevent. But the anime kinda cutted it. Geeze say that once he taught to an party member and she married other party member and they quited adventuring to live together. And that was the end of the party, after that he wasnt able to find another party since he is "good at everything" but to fight and others parties didnt accept an non-fighter. This Geeze lore also makes an scene makes more sense next episode. Edit: The OVA (Eris the goblin slayer) fits chronologically this episode, i recommend to watch right after they leave this town but you can also leave it to the end of season 1. Plus, it had no enphasis in the anime but they're now at Zenith's home town at Millis continent which is world's most religious place and its basically rule by the church, Paul made the operation base here because Zenith's family provide them money, dunno why anime skiped this.

Eliana

Exactly this. Just as we didn't know the scale of the mass teleportation before this episode, Rudeus had no way to know they were not the only ones affected by it. News travel very slowly in this world, and he's been at the furthest place from Buena Village as you can get. Also about Paul's expectations, they were way too high for sure. He's worried about his wife that is an very experienced adventurer, but not at all worried about his 11y/o kid?

chengstax

theres no way in hell that paul fell in love with zenith due to her cooking. it was definitely her body.

Matthew Williams

"Food is the fastest way to mans heart", I wonder why Eris wanted to learn how to cook? This question is a mind boogler we may never truly know the truth to this we might need to hire Sherlock Holmes to look into it.

Matthew Williams

Geese is not the Man-God, in fact he is absolutely terrified to leave his "special space".

Patrick Jacobsen

Rudy had a mission, actually two. one to bring his charge, Eris, back home, the girl whom he is responsible for. the second was to restore the reputation of the guy who so selflesly helped him and Eris travel the demon continent. that's a big responsibilty, so no wonder that Rudy didn't have the oversight to contact the people back home... his plate was full. did Rudy word it wrong when he told his father the story, sure, but that didn't warrant Pauls outburst. Paul expectations for a CHILD was just to damn big, even if Rudy has shown himself capable. Paul was 100% in the wrong here.

Matthew Williams

The Mushoku Tensei Light Novels were first released in November 2012-2015. The Goblin Slayer Light Novels were first released in February 2016-Present. If anything the reverse argument could be made that the author of Goblin Slayer stole that idea from Mushoku Tensei. That isn't the case though it's been a common troupe for decades in hentai (Japanese porn) that Goblins are very "grapey", neither author took that idea from anyone else it's just the troupe.

Keith Merrington

Or watch the OVA after E 17 - because that puts it as close to when it happened in the timeline, and where it happened, without spoiling the flow of E16->E17.

Keith Merrington

Yes - good call on the panties on the head thing & for spotting Paul so quickly. Got the bit about Geese being Hitogami in disguise wrong though.

Marvin C.

A lot of the comments are trying to justify Rudy’s behavior but I wanted to chime in that even though in his past life he was 35 he has been a shut in since high school. He had little to no life experience than what he had up to that high school age. He may have been an adult but with the mentality of a child. Yes there are times where he shows maturity but that’s in regard to thinking logically. Otherwise coming into this world he is learning things like forming relationships and taking responsibility for the first time. Rudy was in the wrong for how he downplayed his troubles to his father but it’s believable in his circumstance.

Suichoku

Pretty sure they are marked as regular episodes on Crunchyroll after the season, so hopefully he will not miss them. But I agree we should try to remind him just to be sure. (Technically he could watch the Eris episode now)

Matthew Williams

Actually believe it or not Rudy putting the panties on his head to cover his face isn't something he thought up originally. There was a manga written by Go Nagai of Devil-man fame of all people called Kekko Kamen. The heroine of the manga fights totally naked except for wearing her own panties on her face much like Rudy did, though later on she does don a head face mask still naked though, the attacks are fairly sexual in nature like jumping at her opponents and sandwiching their face inside her crotch and other moves like that. This manga ran for 4 years 1974-1978, had 2 anime adaptations and 1 live action movie based off of it.

Macatony

I think Luke is a bit too hard on Rudy. At the end of the day Rudy, though has the mentality of a 30 year old man, is just a kid. He's been depressed his whole life and for the first time ever after 40 or so years he's finally found happiness. I think it's fair for him to just enjoy the moment. Also, how could he have possibly known that everyone else got teleported? Like you said, the teleportation incident happened no where near Buena Village so it's fair to assume he was the only one who got teleported. Bro's doing the best he can in a harsh world, finally getting to meet his dad after 18 months just to be told he's not doing good enough. I don't think that's fair to say after all he's been through.

TromboneSpartan

Mushoku is definitely one of those shows that answers questions and leaves you with even more questions. Most of your current questions will be answered in episode 17, but after that episode you can watch the ova or keep going with release order then watch ova after season 1. Regarding Rudy and Paul's fight, I originally thought Paul was in the wrong but as the episode went on I couldn't pick a right or wrong side because they both were in the right but both were also wrong.

Cerivex

When i watched the Episode for the first time i hated Paul, i despised him. We know Rudy is reincarnated and all but no one else knows. Rudy is like 11 or smth and to expect that much of him... I am more on rudy's side, to him all that happened was him and a few close people getting caught up in a disaster, as you said, why would a whole ass village far away be affected. While rudy couldve written about his well being he had far more important matters to attend. Like idk. Surviving. Him telling everything with a big smile was to not worry his father, we forget, rudy died nearly a few times, he got imprisoned, while i agree that he couldve thought that maybe his family is worried about him, thats not the priority, if i need to decide whats more important, telling someone youre doing good or trying to find back home or smth then id definetly do the last. Sorry for thw long comment btw, i just get rly emotional when it comes to issues with family.

Matthew Williams

Something you need to know about circumstances with the kidnapping, the woman in the Leia outfit that were left out of the anime. First up the boy, you might have recognized him as one of the 3 bullies who were picking on Slyphy early on in the show, like everyone else he was teleported randomly. He end up in or around Millis was enslaved, bought by a Millis Nobleman and kept as a sex slave for that 1 1/2 years or so that was why he wasn't responsive at all. The Leia outfit woman's circumstances was much like the boy in that she and her sister who happened to be holding each during the mass teleportation event teleported somewhere randomly. Unfortunately for them both where they ended up was near a bandit camp... They were both repeatedly R-worded for months before Paul and his group found them, killed the bandits and rescued them both. She had a strong mind and managed to recover fairly quickly but her little sister didn't. The little sister was the mage who cast the waterball, she is now afraid of men and afraid of being looked at due to her trauma. So the older sister started wearing that bikini armor while they both fight together to force their male opponents eyes on herself and her body so her sister can cast and fight while she takes all the aggro. Edit to add, no as scummy as Paul is he and her (Vierra) did not ever have sex, though she seems to have feelings for Paul and respects him a lot so she would be happy to but never pushes the issue.

Nicholas Johnson

I kind of disagree. Except for asking about Sylphie first. He messed up there. But he probably never thought that the mana disaster hit that far, why would he? They don't even fully understand mana disasters there. Also, Rudy had been out of touch with his family for a long time at that point. He was living with Eris and her family, he didn't even hear from them on his birthday, or whatever special occasion was. Yeah, they told him that Paul couldn't get there because of the monsters but they said it in an offhand way that made it seem like they were lying about it. I think that with him being out of touch and away from his family and that village for so long before the disaster happened it would make sense that it didn't even occur to him that that village was also hit. Hasn't he been away from that village for like 2 or 3 years at that point? And then he was on the demon continent for a year and a half? I mean, his sister was a baby last time that he saw her. Look at how much she has grown up in that time.

Matt

You'll get more of Rudy and Paul and the details about the disaster next episode, which may influence your opinions about who's right. I simply want to point out why I think Paul overreacted and was even violent with Rudy. Paul had been searching for his family for 1.5 years and had made absolutely no progress. He didn't expect any of his old friends to actually help, so the only person left who would have the ability and desire to find the rest of his family would be Rudy. Zenith may have been an adventurer, but she was a healer and can't fight effectively on her own. Paul has clearly become depressed and alcoholic, but the tiny sliver of hope he had left was that Rudy was out there and had found or was searching for their family. Rudy unknowingly tore up that tiny bit of hope and punched him in the face with it. It's difficult to know what realistic expectations of people are when they're in extreme situations like the teleportation disaster. It's a horrible situation overall, and I don't think there's a single correct way to respond to it. One of the great things about this show is that it provokes discussions like these and really makes you think about your own decisions and relationships in life.

patros36

it wasn't mentioned yet that he was in Paul's party so a bit of a spoiler on his mysterious recommendation, but yeah.

hussam abdelalim

so you are telling me after a year and a half of your 11-year-old child went missing in a disaster you will ridicule him for looking after himself and coming home safely from a monster-filled continent and when meeting you and seeing how you have suffered not wanting to worry you so he tells you (even in a nonchalant or dismissive way) that you did not need to worry at all about me, especially after the horror you have seen other people go through your 100% in the right, now I am not saying that your son is completely blameless, but that would not be my first reaction, i would say the are both equally fucked

Timothy Munk

Some added context. Basically the entire Fittoa region was transported. Some into the sky, some into the ocean, all over the world.

Frentzy

does anyone noticed how patreon doesn't show how many comments a post got z.z?

Timothy Munk

The slutty dressed woman and her younger sister were captured and sold as sex slaves. They were rescued by Paul. The younger sister has been so traumatized by the repeated rapes that she can't handle men even looking at her. Big sis dresses provocative to draw men's gazes

Zero2Antihero

One tweak: Everyone is above-board on the birthday thing. In that episode we do actually see Paul fighting monsters and cursing them for keeping him away from the party. I believe that's also when he receives the pendant Sylfie made (not sure).

Timothy Munk

Rudy absolutely deserved to get punched in the face. He didn't just falsely accuse Paul of cheating, he never gave a thought about his family and made extremely disparaging comments about a rape victim

hussam abdelalim

oh yeah, that was more detailed in the novels, Geese is useless in a fight but he was good at getting resources and info for his former adventuring party and also an amazing cook, so one of the women in the party asked him to teach her how to cook so she can impress another member of the party whom she loved, eventually these two decided to settle down and get married and disbanded the party, now the cooking probably was not the reason the man fell for her, but geese (not really being able to make a living as a solo adventurer) swore that he will never teach another woman how to cook, and as for that seen Eries wanted to learn how to cook for the same reason and Rudey assumed as much and he is being very smug about it

Rur

Paul isn't actually in the right if you think about it. Rudeus had no real reason to suspect that the incident had involved his home village as well since it was far away. Plus he got transported to a barren and dangerous land scarcely inhabited. He also had Eris under his protection and was kinda indebted to Ruijerd for protecting them hence the reason why he helped him. The thing about the letter is that this is not the modern world and letters take time to arrive so he just had to come home fast and that's pretty much what he was doing (went from a continent to another on foot in 1 year and a half). Now taking that into consideration, even if Rudeus could have *potentially* done things more smoothly or acted differently, Paul has no right to expect such things from his son and being the real adult there he should be a father before anything else and therefore he should have acted differently especially since his own efforts in the matter didn't amount to anything. Now Rudeus seems to be in the wrong because we know he's stupid and we know how he thinks but that's only us.

Nicholas Johnson

Yeah, we see it as spectators. But Rudy doesn’t, and when Eris says it she kind of kind of looks down and to the left and moves on really quick. All I’m saying is that it’s easy to not think of them when he’s already been away from them for so long before the disaster happened.

george

Pleaseee have one of the episodes you watch next week be the OVA. It shows things from Eris’ point of view while Rudy was off meeting his dad plus it also shows people that will show up later in the seasons of the show without really spoiling anything. Oh and also because it’ll line up your schedule to have a cliffhanger in like two weeks from now lol. And also it’ll end the season with the last two episodes. That way you can start the new season with both episodes, if that makes sense. Sorry for the rambling lol

Zero2Antihero

I've never thought asking about Sylphie first was actually a character flaw for Rudeus. I'm pretty sure that up until the very moment Paul says she's missing, Rudy still had an ingrained belief common to children: "nothing bad could ever happen to mommy." It makes sense that it might never cross his mind to look for her

MaxValion

Indeed, Geese is god and the founder of the holy village. He is widely known as the Holy Villager. -Once in the past Geese met the previous God of Death - and killed him. -As for the first four of the Great Powers - they are missing because they are all hiding from Geese. -Remember the floating island? It is floating because Perugius, the guy living there, is too scared to walk on the same land as Geese. -Kishirika Kishirisu has twelve Demon Eyes - and she borrowed them all from Geese. -There are three known sword styles: Sword God's Style, Water God's Style and North God's Style. Geese invented them all when he was cutting vegetables for breakfast. -Geese was the truck driver from the first episode.

Roxy’s Holy Relic

I see a few comments here saying to watch the OVA (episode 24) next as it technically happens concurrently to the events in episode 16. While this is true I have to disagree and recommend watching in release order as the OVA introduces us to a (future) important character, provides additional context that isn’t really needed right now , and also helps to bridge the gap between season 1 and season 2. Best to watch it at the end as intended

Matthew Williams

That's the dad in you rearing its ugly head Luke, from Paul's perspective sure yeah Rudy trying to downplay his adventure to Paul to put him at ease is on Rudy. Rudy was teleported to the north end of the Demon Continent to a place where mail isn't a thing and huge, strong monsters are the norm. Him just trying to stay alive much less make sure to protect Eris was at the forefront of everything, yes Rujerd was there to protect them both but how is Rudy to truly know that Rujerd wouldn't turn on them both one day. Since Rudy was at the epicenter of the blast how was he to know that except for him, Eris and Ghislane anyone else was teleported? As for writing his family, Rudy was told not to contact his family while he was away by Paul specifically. As far as Rudy was concerned all he and Eris had to do was get home, have a nice warm welcome to Roa by the Boreas family and that would be it. In that moment of Paul accusing Rudy a 11 year old boy of not doing everything, of not finding every single missing person on his own by himself Rudy didn't even know a single person other then those in his immediate vicinity were teleported. What Paul did there was very deep emotional abuse Luke, regardless of what you think his "parental worry" should be the fact that he wasn't worried about Rudy his 11 year old son one bit but was instead blaming him for not doing more. Paul was almost 100% in the wrong during that whole interaction though I'm willing to give him 5% for Rudy trying to downplay things to not make Paul worry more, which in turn makes Paul even more of an A**hole if you think about it. Rudy wasn't vomiting because of what he said to Paul, he was vomiting because of what his own father said to him deeply emotionally traumatized him.

GTB

"I honestly thought the entire story of Mushoku Tensei was going to be about Rudy trying to find his way home." Um...how can I put this? The story is going to be a bit longer than that lol. And if it wasn't clear for you so far : the mana disaster affected the entire kingdom, i.e. 1/4 of the central continent (you've already seen the massive disastrous consequences in places other than Rudy's home village. And a LOT of people are missing/dead). Regarding the dispute, and what you said about Rudy...the next episode will probably change your view of the situation by clarifying everyone's point of view and wrongs. I'd just say that maybe it's unfair to blame Rudeus for something YOU, Luke, didn't think of either..even though you knew more than he did. You didn't think about his family, you didn't wonder if the "blue light thing" might have had consequences for others, about the scale of what is actually a true and huge disaster while the series has already shown you that it was huge. You didn't think anything of it, even though the series made you understand the gravity of the situation by showing you Zenith/Lilia/Aisha/Norn/Sylphie/Paul just before the mana-disaster; then by showing you the extent and gravity of the consequences with the table of death and missing persons notices when Roxy arrives in Azura, with Paul's letter declaring that everyone has disappeared (in voice-over at the start of an ep), as well as the political consequences with the beheading of Iris's grandfather deemed guilty of mismanaging the catastrophe. As a spectator, you knew a lot more than Rudeus about the gravity of the situation. Rudeus is wrong in a way, yes. So are you, even more. We're in a good position to understand Rudeus. And blaming Rudeus for not being emotional enough at the exact moment when his emotions are twisting his gut to the point of throwing up. Seriously? :p This episode and the next are remarkably well written. A complicated reunion, far from the clichés (as always with MT), more human, because Mushoku Tensei shows once again that it's about flawed characters. ps: Oh, and Eris wants to learn to cook for Rudeus, of course (in Japan, culturally, a woman must know how to cook for the man she loves).

2023-11-20 15:33:15 To be fair to Rudeus: This world doesn't have reliable "mail system" all roads had monsters on the way and you had to send 5 copies of the same letter to make sure that one would arrive. From the Citadel of Roa (where Rudy was) to Shirone (Where Roxy was) took many months and that's on the central continent where monsters were weak. The Demon Continent was the hardest place to live from all. It had no roads, if you go back some episodes you would see they didn't had horses but giant lizards to move since the "roads" were ragged and the terrain was variable, there were many rocky terrain to climb and you would find many monsters going from category D and above in the road. Compared to the Central continent, you would need to go deep in the forest to find monsters of that level. So sending a letter from there was pointless. To be fair to Paul: Once he arrived at Windport in the Demon Continent (Where he missed Roxy) he could have sent letters. In fact in the novel he thought about it many times, be he always got those thoughts derrailed as he got distracted by thinking something stupid and obnoxious. The volumes leading to this moment, his inner ramblings become more and more annoying, and the ramblings he had before meeting Paul were so obnoxious that you wanted to hit him in the head. This is one of his biggest defects, many say that "he is an adult and he should know better" but he locked himself at the age of 14 and never came out until he got kicked by his brothers. He had no socialization and no real life experience, he is an inmature asshole at this point. And he keeps seeing this world as a video game, and he sees "Rudeus Greyrat" as his avatar in this "video game", this is one of many times he will pay dearly for treating this world as a video game but he never loses this defect 100%. In the novels this moment hits even harder because when Paul accuses him of just goofing around he was 100% right and we've been reading all his idiotic ramblings getting worse every chapter until this point. He couldn't deny this and that's why it hit so hard. Also Vierra (Bikini Lady) and Shierra (Mage Lady) are sisters, they got caught by bandits and used as playthings for them. Vierra was able to overcome the trauma by sheer willpower but Shierra couldn't and was scared by men to the point that if a man kept his gaze directly at her she would freak out so Vierra dresses like that to keep the male gaze onto her and not on her sister. Also the mana disaster teleported EVERYTHING in it's radius, rocks, plants, animals, monsters, people, houses, buildings, the earth itself. You can see at the first seconds of the ending and you can see that the energy is lifting the whole land. Anything that existed in physical form that got caught up in it was teleported randomly, to the skies, to the water, below the earth, to volcanoes, to the bottom of the sea. If you look back to when they met Ruijerd, he says that he saw Rudeus and Eris falling from the sky. The only reason they are alive is because they got lucky and Ruijerd caught them. You can also see many shooting stars in the sky when they met him. Those were the unlucky people who were teleported and were falling out. I don't remember this well, but I think that only 3 in 1000 people that got teleported to the Demon Continent was able to survive. Most people who got teleported there died from either heat, eaten by monsters or lack of food.
Suichoku

True, what happened. They have also been really pushing their app recently.. maybe the nerfed the website versio to get people to use the app (don't know how the site is on PC)

Racc

What's wrong with you? He didn't know the girls background, thats something we got as readers. The thing about the insinuation of Paul cheating its something inmature but it didn´t come out of nowhere, Paul was acting like an idiot and "he never gave a thought about his family", even Luke had assumed that, not even the city, just the outside of it got involved in the teletransportation.

Racc

In my opinion the fact that Rudy didn't think of sending a letter doesn't even matter, if he have had the idea of sending a letter, how long would that take to arrive, where he was suposed to send the letter to? to the boreas? Gone, to his house? Gone. Even the letter Pault put on the guilds didn't get to the demon continent guild and in the first place Rudy could have read the letter was Zaint port but the thing with the beast folk happened and they didn't went to the guild there.

Timothy Munk

Rudy didn't give Paul a chance to explain. Rudy just shot his mouth off. The show literally shows Roxy in front of a whole wall of names from those missing. Let's have someone say something disparaging about a rape victim you know and they can say "what's wrong with you, I didn't know" if you don't react perfectly. I love Rudy BECAUSE he's imperfect. But he absolutely earned that punch

FullHeart

You really have to feel for Paul with everything he's been through. I absolutely don't think he's treating Rudy fairly, but he's not wrong. Rudy is pretty smart, but he's not very wise. Compared to a lot of people of that world he seems like a genius and his dad knows exactly how smart he is, but he's not a genius he just has a modern this-world education. Sometimes there are things he doesn't know and doesn't think about, and it's hard to fault his lapse in judgement when he was at the center of the disaster blast. For all he knew it was a small localized disaster.

Timothy Munk

I think I'm one of the few who thinks Rudy is in the wrong here. Do you remember the first time Paul hit Rudy? That was Paul's fault. He didn't listen that time. Well, Paul learned from that first incident. This time, he listened. He drew the wrong conclusions, but at least he listened. Rudy didn't listen. Didn't make even an attempt to learn what had Paul so upset. First bit of criticism sent Rudy's way and he shot his mouth off. Accusing Paul of impregnating the frequently raped sex slave Paul had rescued. This was imperfect people misunderstanding each other. But Rudy absolutely earned that punch to the face

Kaladjoko

Hmm, feels like just a complicated situation that's even more complicated due to Rudy not being a little kid inside, rather than a situation of who is more right or wrong. One way or another, both are very human. Need to read the novels for more detailed info but just my impression on the EP. On one hand, Rudy has always been a flawed character and the show is quite literally about him getting a chance to better himself. Due to his previous life, he clearly lacks the ability to read social queues and see Paul's depressed mood, but that doesn't mean he was speaking light-hearted to be an asshole, even if it came across as such. Furthermore, as much as he should technically know better due to his actual age, that again is the whole point, he doesn't know better and needs to learn to do so in this life. Also, as much as he should have thought over the implications of what happened to him and worried about his close ones, which he clearly realizes when being told so, his situation wasn't easy anyway. He had to survive in a hostile environment (where he could die), make connections + help out his companions, overcome his anxiety in different situations, etc. For a guy who lived as a traumatized recluse in his previous life, there is plenty on the plate here, and did just the best he can currently do, which wasn't enough. He clearly still has growing and work to do. At the same time, let's be fair, "I'm not confident I will deal with being in such a situation very well despite not having the life Rudy had in his previous life." In regards to Paul, we already have witnessed more than enough in terms of how he is flawed too. We have also seen the complexities of Rudy being who he is (a reincarnator in a kid's body) added to his already flawed personality; he is the only father likely dealing with this weird situation and makes his relationship with Rudy clearly abnormal. He's also suffered a lot on top of that due to recent events and again did his absolute best in his own right to deal with the situation. However, that doesn't mean he should take it out on his son like he did, but with how Rudy was acting and the mentioned view he has of Rudy, it makes sense and you can relate. He's also depressed and drunk, so you will likely make mistakes in that state. I can't help but really respect this show for bringing the effects Rudy brings to others for being an Isekai protagonist in an beyond surface level way. At the end of the day, they are both different people given different circumstances. I think both did their best and need a pat in the back (acknowledge each other) for it but they also both showed their faults, and that's just very human.

Emilis2023

Most people I see who watch this episode are more on Rudy's side it seems. It's a really well written conflict though because you can easily see how both of them aren't entirely in the wrong or right. It's kind of a shame watching two episodes a week you weren't offset by one. The previous two wouldn't have been bad to watch back to back both centering around Dodolia village, and this episode along with the next both go together really well.

Seith

Oh, I'm not saying Paul's at fault, I'm saying Luke's too harsh on Rudy. Both Rudy and Paul didn't handle the situation good in my opinion.

Xaniss

you're saying "Mushoku" wrong btw you keep saying "Mushuko"

Maltheus

Luke, I just want to remind you that there is an OVA episode about Eris and her goblin slaying adventure (It's called "Eris the Goblin Slayer") that you should watch after episode 17 "Reunion" and before episode 18 "Separate Journeys" for best viewing experience. On Crunchyroll the OVA is marked as episode 24 (Eris the Goblin Slayer) of season one just so you know. It's going to be important for you to watch it, since it introduces stuff that's going to be important later on. But keep in mind that you definitely should watch episode 17 before the OVA because of how interlinked this episode (ep 16) and the next episode (ep 17) is, otherwise it will impact the flow heavily (which is why it was an OVA in the first place).

nikum

Actually no, best viewing experience would be after ep 18, the themes are way too close for 16-17 and 18.

nikum

Eris wanted to learn how to cook cause she really likes Rudy and wants to cook for him.

Gun Bunny

Part of the disconnect between Rudy and Paul is the fact that Rudy was literally at ground zero when it occurred. There's no way he could have known the extent of the disaster from the available information. Also, Geese checking in at the Adventurer's Guild is this world's equivalent of logging into Facebook. Roxy, Elinalise and the dwarf found Paul's call to action at a Guild hall, after all.

nikum

Paul was a total asshole in this situation, Rudy didn't handle it well, but the biggest mistake was Paul's for being a total asshole from the start. When you see your son after all this shit, you don't blame him, you are glad and hug him tight, no matter what.

Timothy Munk

Naw, Paul wasn't a total asshole until AFTER Rudy got done explaining his grand adventure where he never thought about, much less tried to make contact with his family. It wasn't from the start

『KANSEN』

i just remembered the eris ova falls into this episode and the next its about eris slaying goblins, it would fall in line with how you watch the story if you were to watch the eris ova after this or the next episode ! in short its a extra episode that happens during this and the following episode

nikum

Imagine a huge natural disaster happens tomorrow and you get separated from your family, you find your kid after a year+ and the first thing you do is blame them for not doing more, no matter how smart they are, or capable or anything and you don't just give them the biggest hug in the world, you're a fucking asshole and you fucked up royally as a father.

Hawk of Battle

Luke, it was called a Mana Disaster, emphasis on disaster. The whole kingdom got hit. Of course, Rudy couldn't have known that, nor would he have suspected it. He downplayed the story, but how was he to know? Also, considering he already had to cross a demon filled desert, an ocean, and spent the last 6 months in a water logged jungle and only JUST NOW got back to human territory, how exactly was he supposed to contact anyone? As for not getting Pauls message at the port; that was the same port they basically bypassed smuggling Ruijerd through, which then led to fighting a slaver den and imprisonment by beast people. So the message was missed.

Stefanos Georgiou

Nah I’m sorry but Paul is wrong, you can’t expect a 12 year old kid to travel the world and survive, even with help it’s a miricle he survived. The fact that he was able to make it back at all, his father should be happy. If he was an adult then maybe but you have to remember they are still kids

nikum

To give specifics about why sending messages in that world was completely pointless from the get go, since the anime skips it. The letter Roxy sent Rudy when she was tutoring the prince, took 6 tries to get to him because it got lost on the way. That's from the Shirone Kingdom to Buena Village. The box she sent him, she hired an A rank party to take it to him, from Shirone to the Boreas manor. That's literally a few days of travel between the 2 countries. Now imagine Rudy sending a message from the Demon Continent, the shittiest place on that planet, I would compare it to being in Australia's Outback, there's no way in hell a message would ever reach Paul, Rudy knew that, so he never tried.

Izayoi Sakamaki

In this case I'm on Rudys side. Of course he downplayed it. If I met my father after 1.5 years after such an incidence I would also tell him that I'm okay and arrived safe and sound and not that I had many hardships which would only unnecessarily worry him. And Rudy was so focused on getting back to them that he didn't think that maybe their village which was a few days worth of travel away would also be affected by that disaster. And I doubt anyone else would in that situation.

Hitsters

Yeaaaah. I kind of agree on the whole "Rudy is wrong there, he was kind of not interested on how everyone was doing etc..." BUT. You're way too harsh. And so is Paul. I can understand Paul's state, but how he met his son was SO wrong. "Oh yeah ? You've been telling me it was kinda hard, and even that you got jailed ? That it seemed fun times because "you told it this way but it wasn't really" ? That you had "your hands full with the situation" ? You're a grown ass KID you should have known better ! " No Paul, no. First of all you didn't fackin talk to your son since AGES ago. Secondly, you didn't even know he was alive, could you seem a bit relieved if anything ? Thirdly, Rudy didn't know the catastrophe was on the whole country. And most of all, even IF he seems mature (for obvious reasons, we know, but he doesn't) HE'S STILL SUPPOSED TO BE YOUR FACKIN CHILD, and not even a grown one ! The demon continent was a really dangerous situation, even with Ruijerd along. Rudy almost died fighting this sword saint in the doldia village. And even before that, the situation was not always fun and giggles the whole time before at Eris's house. And what then ? He proceeds to throw a fully blown punch to his son because of some remark about being with beautifull womans when his wifes are not around... While he just did the same thing to a child ? I mean, yeah, Rudy didn't know Lilia and Zenith are still missing, so it's really not a good thing to say... And I guess he KNOWS for a fact he's a womanizer and he even raped some. Truth hurts. Both sides were hugely wrong in this situation. Not one more than the other.

Burezu

I totally get both parties here and that both parties don't get what the other has been through. Paul thinks of his son as this super smart boy who got through the demon continent basically on his own, but didn't think once about his family and friends and "goofed off". Meanwhile Rudy had all hands full with somehow keeping Eris save and while doing that he couldn't send letter or the like, we see that he wants to write one as soon as he enters human territory so we can guess that postal service to human countries isn't a thing in the demon continent. Also Rudy couldn't have known if anyone else has been teleported, the only teleported people he knows are himself and Eris, everything that happened after that is unknown, he doesn't know how wide this beam was.

2023-11-20 15:33:15 Paul is completely in the wrong here, Rudy wanted to send a letter as soon as he stepped foot on an actual human continent, telling people in the Demon Continent wouldn’t have done anything. The Doldia people can’t tell anyone that would matter and neither could Roxy’s people. After this long of not seeing Rudy he gets pissed at him because he “could’ve done better” what the hell is that reasoning?? Your child is alive after all this and that’s your thoughts? Nah Paul is completely in the wrong and Rudy has been BUSY trying not to die every city or major encounter he’s come across. Not to mention the monsters he must’ve fought in the Demon Continent that we didn’t even see.

plus he knows that both his mother and father were s-class adventurers once, so it is fair for him to assume that both of them can handle themselfs, Paul did so (even if he looks worse now)

You have been really harsh on rudy this time all the other comment explain it better but how can rudy knew that evryonehe know was missing. in his mind he just wanted to bring Eris back home safely, they had a lot of rough time too.

John

Not just travel the world, but the absolute most dangerous part of the world.

I think this is the worst take on a situation you've had, and I think It'll be explained to you why next episode. Rudy screwed up sure but he had no idea that the teleportation disaster was so massive, he thought it was Geilane, Eris, and him. Geilane wasnt with them and could take care of herself so he focused on Eris and repaying Ruidjerd kindness. You saw that it wasn't a fun and safe trip (Ruidjerd being quick to violence and not getting along with Rudy (yes Rudy was in the wrong most of the time but not always) and the countless near death situations they were in) so would you think that he was making it sound good to not worry his dad? Rudy would of been capable of more if he had information but he didn't. Lastly, his only fair screw up was not contacting anyone once he was off the demon continent (which he wrote a letter at the beginning of the episode and probably would of beat home anyway)

Paul

City didn’t dodge the mana disaster. Everyone in the whole Fittoa region got caught up in it. Rudy was at ground zero he had no idea how big it ended up. You prove this since even you thought the city was spared and were confused how the village was hit. Also you criticize him for worrying about Sylphy first, but I’d cut him slack his Mother was an S-ranked adventurer before Rudy was born. She can handle herself. Kids often see their parents as infallible or godlike. Even someone with a previous life grew up in this new world with them as his parental figures. Sylphy was his weak childhood friend. He’s instantly worried about her because she probably couldn’t survive in the demon continent. Even Rudy and Eris would have struggled big time without Ruijerd. Rudy also failed to explain when he arrived in Zant port he didn’t stop by the adventurer guild but went to the smugglers den and immediately afterward was imprisoned in the Doldia village. If he had just said it more accurately Paul may have forgiven him not seeing the letter. And if he had explained he was at ground zero and didn’t even know it hit the city of Roa, he probably wouldn’t have had the fight at all.

Racc

Rudy didn't knew how big was the area affected by the teleportation. Even Luke had assumed that it was just where they were near the city. He wasn't supossed to make contact with his family or went to his home until he was 12 so in his mind his only preocupation was to get Eris to Asura.

Timothy Munk

It's not about whether Rudy knew everything. It's about how he didn't TRY to learn before running his mouth. Paul missed the mark when he started talking smack, but at least he gave Rudy time to speak first.

Timothy Munk

Also, while Rudy wasn't supposed to contact Sylphy during his time as a tutor, that's a poor excuse after being sent halfway across the world. Whether Luke connected the dots before Rudy and Paul reunite is irrelevant. Rudy didn't give Paul a chance to speak before running his mouth.

Wong Kk

I think luke need to know that this is a drama focused show instead of a show about "I want to become the very best". Don't expect to have a lot of action because its never the focus of this show

KDaBHoo

Oh boy, some of these comments rea really heated. It shows it's a really well written conflict though. I remember when the episode came out, everyone was fighting on forums and such about who was in the right.

KDaBHoo

"And blaming Rudeus for not being emotional enough at the exact moment when his emotions are twisting his gut to the point of throwing up." I found this really funny when watching, can't lie. I think what put Luke off was how Rudy was still trying to sort things out like a plan, which I guess he can't relate to in situations like that. It's how I do these things though. Whenever I had a huge dispute with someone I cared for, I'd do the exact thing Rudy did. Try and think of how things can still be fine. Still doesn't get rid of the feelings though, which we saw with Rudy vomiting.

Wong Kk

I think luke need to know that this is a drama focused show instead of a show about "I want to become the very best". Don't expect to have a lot of action because its never the focus of this show

David

What's the right attitude, the person happy it worked or for the one where it didn't? Who's the selfish one to set the narrative? I definetly love this show on so many levels... I'm just that selfish. ;)

Whata Save

it should be nice if u reacted to ep 16 and 17 together, but its fine

The Pots

no. he don't need to watch the OVA immediately next as it's too out of place with the conflict happening. he can just watch it as a side story after S1

maratreus ,

The thing is that Rudy was lying because he wanted his dad to be proud

Aliziel

Eris wants to learn how to cook so she could cook for Rudy and he wants her to spell it out but that would mean she's seriously preparing to be his wife.. if you remember in his 10th birthday they're practically in an "arrange marriage" relationship right now. 🤭

Timothy Munk

Do you remember the first time Paul hit Rudy? That bully lied to his mother about the fight. She tattled to Paul and Paul didn't listen to Rudy. Well, Paul learned from that lesson and this time he listened first before getting angry. Rudy spoke about adventure time, but never offered a reason to not write home and never asked about Paul's situation or anyone else in his family. I'd be pissed if I were Paul. And Rudy responds to criticism with his own accusations. But Rudy never listened. In this area, Paul has grown. He's still not perfect. But Rudy doesn't even do that much. I love that this is two imperfect people with imperfect knowledge having an imperfect reaction. Few fictions do that. But Rudy earned that punch over getting mouthy like he earned Eris punches over getting handsy

Trey

I love this episode because their argument is very real, they both have valid points but it all boils down to poor communication and not being able to see the others point of view. I think Paul handled it quite poorly but it makes sense why he would as Rudy never explains to him that he had no idea how big the disaster was because he was at ground zero, and also that he didn't even visit the adventurers guild in Zant Port because of the whole smuggling/beast people incident. Paul is arguing based off what he knows and ASSUMES Rudy knows, and Rudy tries to defend himself without realizing there's a break in communication which can happen in emotional arguments. All in all I think Paul is in the wrong but I can fully understand why he would get so upset in the moment.

Racc

I get what you are trying to say but I still think that my point is valid. Rudy subconsciously assumed his family was safe so i guess he really didn't worry about them and Yeah, assuming the village wasn't affected and still were a place where he could send a letter to and were someone to receive it he probably should have sent a letter like "Father, mother i am alive" or something like that realistically by the time the letter arrived if it arrived at all they would have been at milis already which is an easy ride already from there to asura. And the thing you say that "he didn't TRY to learn before running his mouth", Paul didn't even let Rudy finish what he was saying and started atacking him and then, as inmature as it is Rudy insinuates that Paul is having an afair with the girl that has the revealing outfit, commentary wich you by some reason thinks is insensible to the girls because they were raped which is something Rudy doesn't know and it wasn't related, and then Paul punch him in the face without saying why he was angry with him.

Nicolas Castro

As for the issue that Rudy never sent a letter is because he knew that he was not going to arrive from the demonic continent to his home, it must be taken into account that in this world it is not easy to send a message, when Rudy was still in Roa before the disaster of Mana and letters were sent with Roxy, these generally never arrive at the destination and they had to send the letters multiple times and if they arrived at destination they could take several months, now imagine sending the letters at a distance 6 times greater, when Rudy arrives in human territory is the first thing he tries to do since at least he has some chance in reaching the message, certainly Rudy does not have a great attachment to his family but it is not that he does not care about them, in case both Paul and Rudy handled the situation badly, but Paul is the one who did the worst, He simply decided to blame his son for something he couldn't get to know about the scale of the mana disaster and its repercussions

Timothy Munk

My issue isn't that Rudy doesn't know. My issue is that he doesn't ask or make any attempt to learn. Paul asked Rudy what had happened. Then Paul asked follow up questions. Rudy could have asked the same back. He didn't. He just threw accusations around.

Timothy Munk

We're clearly at an impasse here. Rudy didn't screw anything up and Paul never gave him a chance. Or something like that. I'll tell you this much though. If my friends are ever sold into sexual slavery and raped on the regular and you start making sexual accusations about them.... you'll eat my fist too and "it's OK because I didn't know" won't mean a damn thing to me

CoreTendency

I love that this episode really changes how you feel looking back at everything that has happened since the disaster. And obviously Rudy has a long way to go, but in moments like this, you can really see forced to do a lot of self-reflection. It really stood out how his sister called him a bully when he was someone who had been bullied in his previous life.

Aliziel

this is why you should've just watched Eris OVA You'll have to wait a week for next ep now or you can just watch it and record post it on next week like you sometimes do..😅

Aliziel

well we are all just as clueless as Rudy cos the explosion happened right in front of me and who would've thought it would go all the way to my house which is 10days or months away from where I am?🤷🏻

Ryan Clark

Given your feelings that Paul is primarily in the right, I cannot wait for your reactions to the next episode or so when a character in the show drops some absolute S tier truth bombs about this. Even if his feelings are justified, which they are, just like Rudy's. Pauls' a grown man and a parent, and his actions here show just how not ready for parenthood he always was. Which was why I though you as a parent would be little less on Pauls' side here and would instead lean towards the idea that they are both right and justified; and wrong and narrow minded; in their own ways. Given that, I can't forgive Paul for lashing out and hitting his own son for failing to better than him or living up to his absurd expectations just because Rudy has magical talent. It comes across as supremely childish to me. Though the feelings Paul has are totally fair his approach to dealing with the inadequacies of his son are entirely unacceptable. Still, this is why I love this show and I think the character drama here is a highlight of the first season to me. The humanness of both character being right and wrong, failing to deal with it perfectly and then the emotional fallout that results is so compelling and highlights just how much room for growth both characters have. After this fight and it aftermath both Paul and Rudy solidified their spots as my two favourite characters in the first season despite them both being terrible people. Oh, and your comment about Rudy being too focus on helping Ruijerd rankles me, I'm not sure how you got that impression, I always though it was pretty clear that his primary goal was to return Eris safely to Fittoa (outside of the time he spent in the demon city where both goals were equally important and that caused some trouble). Though its definitely true that goal and Rudy's own bias and narrow-mindedness got in the way of Rudy analysing the teleport situation properly and how he could have made contact earlier, instead of just treating the ordeal like a grand adventure. That's totally on Rudy.

Lucas Gianini

Yeah man, others have already explained why your take on this situation is something I’d disagree with, but at this point you’re working with incomplete information. Once the next episode hits you’ll probably have a bit of a different outlook on their argument. Something to keep in mind, especially with this show but also with a lot of other series in general, is that you can’t have such a black and white view on a lot of issues. Pretty much no one is really good or bad, but rather somewhere in between. Anyway, excited to see how you’ll react to the next episode haha, so far I’ve enjoyed your reactions to MT, even when I disagree with you. Side note, but can someone on discord PLEASE teach this man how to say “Mushoku” instead of “Mushuko?” It’s not that big a deal, but it has been a while now and I’d think someone would have mentioned it by this point lol.

Kyle

I would also like to add that right before the teleport incident, Rudy was a little preoccupied with someone(the guy with the fox mask) trying to kill him.

Kyle

You were asking why Rudy wasn't acting emotional from the realization of what happened to his family. He was clearly playing mental games with himself and trying to reason out some plans of action to try and suppress his emotions only to fail and literally puke his guts out from the emotional trauma.

Dat_Saucy_Boy

So just to answer a couple of the questions you had throughout the episode 1. Eris wants to learn how to cook well because we can assume she wants to be able to cook for Rudy 2.The mana disaster affected the village because it was just that big. You'll see the full extent of its impact later on 3.You definitely didn't realize it but you've actually already seen Sylphie post mana disaster, you just didn't recognize her, plus she was kind of just in the background. If you don't believe me check out the ending of episode 14 where Eris' grandad gets executed. A couple of things I wanted to highlight regarding Rudy's fight with Paul, Rudeus told the exciting and fun parts of the story because it made for a better story, if you go back you'll see that he says that's just how he told the story when Paul says it sounds like a had a great time. He left out most of the nasty bits because it definitely wasn't all sunshine and rainbows trying to get to where he is today. Another thing regarding why he didn't write and why he was so focused on other things like helping Ruijerd, was because that's what the Man-God told him to do. Most of what he's done up to this point has been overarchingly directed by the Man-God. The fact that he missed Paul's message was purely coincidence and since he was so focused on the directions he was getting he didn't think to reach out. It's a valid criticism for Paul to have since he doesnt know about the Man-God, but I don't think it was worth socking your 12 year old son in the face over it. We all know Rudy is actually like 40 years old on the inside, but Paul and everyone else doesn't know that, which is why Paul's team told him to cut Rudy some slack because to them he's a kid who just made it through the demon continent.

Racc

Oh, i didn't know I was talking with an alpha, megachad, sigma male who would punch another person without talking first. 🦍 If we were in a situation like you describe, wich problably nothing even similar would happen because hopefully you live in a safe country, and I without realizing make your friend remember something traumatic I wouldn't expect a punch in the face, I would expect something like "dude, don't say that ever again because x, y and z" and any normal person would be like "I'm sorry, i didn't know, i didn't mean to, i apologize" what i meant was that he doesn't know the girls background and to me is the meaning/intention behind the words that matters not what you can interpret to get offended and he was trying to diss on Paul, the guy who have already cheated on his wife with the maid, not the girls who had gone trought something terrible. Fuck, this got to serius over a freaking anime, we have different opinions but that's fine, it's nice geting to know others opinions rather than only having your own. Wish you a good rest of this year.❤️

AngelGxbriel

He's gonna cry, i just know it

Kamil Butala

I found it funny how many UK's reactions has problems pronouncing japannesse names/words even tho they look so simple to us..as for me i am from slovakia and its like speaking normaly to pronounce those words for me but this is purely dependant on a person :)

Ttsukasa

His Dad is 100% wrong, you don't have your son tell you "Hey dad I just surfed out of literal HELL on earth, man met this dude with demon horns, struck body guard deal, saved damsel in distress, did a little dance, learned how to lock pick my way out of a cell, fought some bad guys ya da ya da bing bang i'm home" And ignore the "I just came from hell" part. Paul is an S ranked adventurer. He knows better than most that the Demon Cont. is named appropriately. If your son just came from Hell, regardless of what he tells you, you should be happy your son survived hell. And how stupid are you to believe he had a magical good time there? My brother is a Marine, he served and went over seas. We had to sign docs saying it is what it is if he doesn't come home. He came home. I've asked softly if he's okay and it was okay. He gave me some story of peace and boredom, but has slipped in stuff about IDES and rules of engaging the civilian populous, defending bases, etc. I am not oblivious enough to ask further details. I'll err on the side of safety and let him know i'm happy he made it back and hug him to death rather than act like he should have done more. If he chooses not to give me the grim details of war. Thanks, he's doing it because he thinks he's doing me a favor. I'm not going to treat him like he went on a vacation. He didn't, he went to war.

Ttsukasa

Rudy was lying because he saw the sorry sack of shit state his Dad was in and didn't want to add more worry, he was trying to lift up his fathers mood by telling an overtly positive story.

Peter Parker

this episode never fails to make me tear up!

FraaD

23:35 Rudy is just like you Luke ,he doesnt think the WHOLE village is missing ,he think just him eris & ghislaine

Pete Bickmore

Why you are right in a lot things that were said about Rudy, the main thing to remember is that he would have had no way of knowing the whole village disappeared. We as the viewer knew it because we were told it through Roxy and her party. But Rudy's context is that him, Eris, Ghislaine and a random dude were in a field out of the city, there was a big light and they were teleported. They had no idea of the scale. Paul is being very obtuse assuming Rudy would know. One of Paul's weaknesses as a father his accepting that Rudy is very different to him in a lot of ways. But you are right about the way he handles other people and their emotions as well as his own. In his old life, when things got hard for him, he locked himself away and threw himself in to anything that wasn't his actual life. When he came to this world from birth, he stayed in his house and shut the outside world out by learning magic. Roxy being a great mentor got him out of that and he was ever improving. But when the disaster happened, he fell back to type by throwing his emotions to the side and getting lost in the adventure. He's a great character to watch because he's a lot more human than a lot of fictional characters. The final moments of this episode where the emotional guilt hits him hard after he catches himself trying to hide from the situation by going in to adventure mode again are what makes this series so good.

Hamo

she wants to cook for rudy thats why btw

dartcp

Luke between episodes 16 and 17 there is an OVA episode that shows this day from Eris's point of view (Eris' Goblin Subjugation). The episode is called episode 24 but it takes place on the exact day where Rudi meets Paul and shows the day by eris. It would make sense to watch it next and not at the end of season 1

GTB

Guys, about the ova ep 24, stop saying that Luke has to watch it between ep 16 and 17 just because it takes place at the same time. These 2 episodes are thematically directly linked and must be watched one after the other. Ep 24, as its name suggests, was released after the end of season 1, and now you know that in a way it makes sense to watch it between season 1 and 2. In the original Light Novel, this episode is an interlude chapter set after episode 17. So, to follow the Light Novel, Luke can watch it between episode 17 and 18. But it makes no sense to watch it between ep 16 and 17.

GTB

Next episode, Luke will surely see things differently...thanks to a character he likes :).

Chris Gama

Yep and remember that one episode where it shows that elf woman and dwarf that were old companions of Paul's, they were standing in an area looking at a board of names, I assumed that was around the village with all its inhabitant's names. The place looked like it was wiped out. The mana disaster probably had a radius of hundreds of miles.

Chris Gama

Whats even more kinda heartbreaking is that even though this is the first time Rudy realized that the whole village was affected, that the scale of the mana disaster was much more than he thought, but like what would he tell Eris? I mean for all he knows, Eris' family got caught up in it too (and well, we know that repercussions did happen, since we saw what happened to her Grandfather). Like you would think Eris would have that on her mind too.

Some0neElse

The cooking part is basically about Eris wanting to cook for Rudy. In anime its a constant theme that girls cook meals for the boys they like. Its very overused in school animes where they prepare lunch boxes etc

Ricko Andrew

Rudy tells the story the way like it's not a burden to him, because he doesn't want to make paul worry. Then here is paul, thought that Rudy would be fine and search the other vanished people even though he is like 10 or smth, no matter what genius you are, you shouldn't rely on a kid. You might be in paul side because you yourself is a dad, but the first thing paul should do after seeing his son again is to celebrate it, hug him, not angry to him because he did not met your expectation and he got it easy. Both of them is at fault at something.

Darian Torres

You probably missed it a couple episodes ago ( I did too )Paul was reading out his letter in the beginning of the episode , it was the episode where Rudy initially joined the adventures guild & you was like “do I know these people , I don’t know these people “ 😂, when Pauled named Aisha , Lillia , & Zenith .

yuzu hibiki

One of the best part about this series is the fact that they don't just toss out the whole person char in the previous life and make the guy an godly saint that overpowers everyone in the world. Rudeus trauma still remains since he still has his memory and we see it resurface every now and then. He is hindered not only by his past life memories but also the way things work in this world. I rmb a few episode back you were saying rudeus isn't doing shit, but if you look back, every time his tries to do something that he wouldn't in the past life, the world seems to say "fk u" to him and bites him in the ass. This time around he tries to "save" a stranger, he gets judges and has his trauma resurface. When he tries to Prevent unnecessary death, he got blackmailed by the horse demon. Ruijerd definitely played a part in their survivor but the fact that Rudeus could make it this far with him is because he went out of his way to learn the different language used by the demon and beast people

face

love from norway <3

声優 何でも

yeah Luke, I agree, let's blame the 12 year old kid with a 30+ year old trauma for not doing better and think more about other people than himself even though he holds a deep people trauma for 30+ plus years and still manages to cross the most horrendous hell of demon continent, several deaths, smuggling syndicates, and being locked in a cell. Not like he had his hands full or anything pshhh~

BRUNO Marques

Geese isn't the Man-God. But yes there is more to Geese, which is the case for many characters in the show as they have their own motivations and plans. They don't just exist to make Rudy a convenient self insert.

charlymoon

Rudeus said it himself, he just didn't think about it, he didn't know everyone went missing and in the port he didn't check the guild's board because he was focused in going throught the ocean. one thing most people forget it's that rudeus dropped out from school and became a shut in, he may be 30+ old when he died but not only adults can also make mistakes, he never actually matured, so he is, as you can see in the anime, basically just a horny teenager

Daniel Costello

That’s maybe because that’s not a trope, it’s literally how real life works. What’s the best way for a woman to impress a man in her life? Cook an amazing meal. Same for a man impressing a woman. That’s not an anime trope, it’s reality lol

rostikowb

Luke, you stepped into Paul's shoes, but forgot to do the same for 12-year-old Rudy, I'm not saying that Paul is completely wrong, but 99% of the time he is

draggo

People also don't realize that you can go through life and completely lack certain common experiences. In my case it was probably related to a disability, but I was always at least a couple years behind everyone else when it came to social matters. There's also lots of "teenage drama" I didn't go through until my 20's. I do suspect his maturity partially halted in his previous life due to some sort of trauma, as well. Trauma and mental illness is complex and can be confusing from the outside.

draggo

I think that's the best way to put it. I was frustrated with both Rudy and Paul watching this episode. Rudy for making his adventure sound like a cake walk, Paul for reacting so badly... but its important to remember that they've both been through a lot. The next episode really helps balance perspective and put it all together.

TromboneSpartan

It does not make sense to watch it after 16. OVA will just feel out of place because 16 and 17 go hand in hand.

dragean greyfield

It also doesn’t help that even as a baby he saw his parents as children themselves due to his mental age being near or a bit older than his current parents. Not only that but given how he lived previously I doubt he had any real attachment to his last parents towards the end but more akin to resentment due to them pushing him repeatedly to go into society again. When it comes to bonds he still has a ways to go.

slipstride

Having never put myself into Paul's shoes it's interesting to see your take on his attitude and actions tword rudy and I agree with alot of the points you made I've always been more on Rudy's side mostly because we have seen his journey and know it wasent the cake walk he makes it out to be but looking at it from both sides I don't think either side is in the right paul expects too much from a kid and Rudy's thoughlessness has its consequences over all its a sad reunion but it's what makes this show so compelling the characters aren't perfect and they're struggles feel so real

iAmMe

I think that he didn't ask about his mother because he just assumed that she's safe with paul.

Dorcusss

there was a bit of glitching in this video. not sure why. it didn't impact it too much, but it's there.

The Pots

I think people are telling you to watch Mushoku Tensei OVA after this episode, please don't. that OVA was released after S1 so you should watch it AFTER S1. I know chronologically, that should be watched next but the way the OVA was made feels like a teaser to S2. You're just gonna feel weird when you watch the OVA after this episode, not to mention you're in the middle of the Paul vs. Rudeus conflict

Moon

i just realized you have the same mole under your left eye as rudy and paul does…huh

Aaren YASS

Honestly, Paul himself said that he wouldn't talk to Rudy the entire time he was there. His 10th b-day was going to be the exception. So of course it wasn't different for Rudy. He didn't have any daily back n forth. If i never habitually contact anyone, why would I suddenly do it? His circumstances are less desirable but he's still using his brain and doing his best. Let's not forget the important context his father sent him to that place with to train that "rich girl". Rudy coulda just said that because Paul is so capable (his mother too), he assumed they'd be together already. -

ziarno pl

yeah bur Also Rudy I think missed the bad parts to not make Paul worried he left out being locked up naked in a prison being threatened byt demon adventures and stuff he didnt had that great of a time he said it in a cheerful tone to not worry his father at least thats what I think of it

Ron Hal Farmer

Rudeus was snickering at Eris wanting to learn how to cook so she could be more "wife" like. :D

Brandipity

"thoughtlessness" hes been struggling and fighting for his life for the last 1.5 years trying to figure out how to get home. You arent going to be thinking about other people being sucked into the magic teleportation. Most people when watching it go "oh, i didnt even think about other people getting sucked into it" and they arent fighting almost daily to survive and make enough money to travel home.

EGGY MCNUGGETS

You guys are taking lukes points about defending and understanding paul way too seriously, yes obviously both paul and rudy have their right and wrongs about their circumstances, but luke is also a father just like paul and it would make sense to feel some sort of animosity when your kid who didnt even bother asking for help to find you and is just "having fun" from pauls perspective. Like luke said from pauls perspective EVERYTHING he had except his daughter had disappeared in an instant and he's been looking for everyone, including his townsfolk for a year and a half... just to hear that the son he sent off for school is "lallygagging" around the map and going on adventures to restore a "demons" reputation and doesn't even bother sending word to let his worrying father know.

Szadek96

The thing that makes me side with Rudy on this a LOT is how little he actually knew about what happened. He was a couple hundred feet from the point of impact. For all he knows Eris and Ghislaine were the only other ones to get teleported besides himself. He had Eris with him and Ghislaine is trusted to take care of herself. He has no reason to assume that the teleportation affected the rest of the city, forget reaching far enough to affect the people back in the village. He knew NOTHING. He thought it was a very local and limited phenomenon. HE WAS WRONG.

Chrono 1002

This was an episode where I would want to punch Paul in the face. Rudy may not have handled the situation perfectly, but that doesn't mean that a child should be expected everything and from Paul's perspective he is a child. While I can understand Paul's reaction because of his despair, he was still the one at fault here. He was clearly just venting it out on Rudy. The only thing that I thought was weird of Rudy and could be blamed for was that he asked about Sylphy first even if he expected his family to be safe with Paul. I can't even imagine why anyone would take the side of Paul. How should have Rudy known that the scale of the teleportation reached the village too? Also he just wanted to repay Ruijerd his kindness for saving them. I don't see any problem with that either. And we don't even know how letters and communications work in that world, especially from a different continent.

DevDSilver

People watching this series that blames Rudy seems to forgot he came from a world where if something like this happen he would have to anything but find his way back ours world is so convenient that we can send a I’m fine and well through a text as well as the news and social media would do all the work on letting everyone know who is missing or dead. Rudy is adult in a child body but at same time he is effected by the child mind to an extent which is proven multiple times also he is not good at planning things out so no Paul is in the wrong he lost everything yes but what was his choice when looking for them become a drunken jackass that expect everyone to feel sorry for him and takes his anger out on his son he just found all because Rudy kept a positive mind even throughout everything he has been through while Paul wallows in self misery/pity. Then everyone jumps on Rudy once he punches Paul back after attacking him but not a single person said anything to clear things up or about how paul was out of line which is terrible in my opinion.

Technosage

I mean, Spoiler alert hear if you don't wanna read it. But the man calling him boss is a servant to the Man God, but not him himself. So you're Very close, just a bit off.

Technosage

I think you're under estimating how much Rudy had to do. He had to protect them, and he also had to help the superds reputation. While also just in general Finding a way back home, he never even got to the adventures Guild in the port city. 'cause they just left almost immediately. Just to clarify, I'm saying neither of them are in the right. They share equal parts wrong

Technosage

Also, to be fair, Paul didn't knoe, what happens fully until getting home either So yeah

Arcade'owy Łowca

His father is also to blame. Instead of helping him, he just said "naah, he'll manage". It's almost like Rudy is not a part of his family. Plus to expect a Child to just understand everything is beyond stupitidy.

CaptainVanisher

In this instance he was and wasn't wrong. If he did know the real age of Rudy, he'd be 100% in the right. Of course he forgot in all this commotion that his son was still 12 even though he was extremely mature and strong. Also how is Paul 99% of the time in the wrong?

CaptainVanisher

Tbh for anyone watching from outside, Paul is 100% right. Rudy is 40something in terms of age, he was extremely incompetent and ignorant of anyone else besides himself and Eris and later Ruijerd. Paul's feelings were also 100% on the right because of how Rudy acted and how he was talking about his adventures. He also made it even worse after accusing his dad of cheating and then worrying about Sylphie before his own mother and sister. However Rudy is still 12 years old in this world and of course Paul was out of line with his expectations if all we knew was that Rudy was a 12 year old prodigy (and not a full grown man). Even then though, Paul was treating Rudy as more mature than his age since forever because Rudy was weird since birth. Paul had been doing everything in his power up to that point to be a good husband and a father. I mean he literally held his urges as an adamant polygynist for the shake of his wife for years, up until he was literally seduced. He understood his mistakes pretty well. Besides hitting your child isn't all that people crack it up to be. In fact a lot of the time it's pretty good for a child's development to learn to behave and to learn who has the authority through a few hits/spanks. From what I've experienced people who had their asses handed to them a couple of times as a child were better behaved and more whole as people.

CaptainVanisher

Well if you've paid attention to the show, it was clear the scale of the disaster. Even Rudy was describing it as "huge mana disaster". It would only be normal to write back home AT LEAST any time between those 1.5 years. It would also be fully reasonable for his time try and find out about the disaster or at least spread his name around in hopes of finding someone that has any connection to his family or father.

CaptainVanisher

Well if that were actually true, why didn't he use deductive problem solving to understand why his dad may be in that predicament? Why would his dad be drunk and beat down in the Millis continent rescuing a random child? In fact he was so full of himself that he added oil to the fire by accusing him of infidelity and worrying first for Sylphie and then for his mother and siblings.

CaptainVanisher

His expectations were big however, knowing what we know they weren't big whatsoever. Rudy is not in fact a kid and rudy should've in fact thought about writing home or trying to find out about the disaster. So in a way Paul is 100% correct. Having said that, even with what Paul knew, he is still mostly correct. Rudy for some time did just goof off and from how Rudy was saying that he was going on the adventures so happy and proud, his reaction was 100% valid. Rudy was that hope Paul had, Rudy was extremely mature and strong from the age of 6 so Paul was accustomed to talking to him as if he was older than his actual age. So following that, Paul had this hope that his genious and mature son would've put two and two together and has somehow managed to search for his mother, sister and family.

CaptainVanisher

He could've wrote. He was in at least 2 coastal cities, delivering messages would be for sure possible. Besides I am certain that they did transport messages through birds, so yes he could've wrote to them. He could've also tried to find out about the disaster. How could he have known? Putting a little thought into it, he would've asked himself. "We were close to Roa, is Eris' father and mother okay? Could the disaster have been so massive that it even hit my home village?" Any put together mature person would first worry about their family, before they worry about themselves. Rudy not only downplayed his story, he accused his father of infidelity and then went on to worry about Sylphie when hearing about the news instead of the rest of his family. Of course Rudy is 12 and his father had a lot of expectations for his age, but he knew Rudy was mature and strong, so he had the hope that his prodigy son could've somehow manage to at least bring some good news of his wives and other daughter. Instead all his genius son brought was happy and exciting adventures while he was trying all by himself to bring his family together. Paul was 70-80% on the right on this one.

Why put stuff like this here. Its a terrible thing to do, very selfish.

Matt Tucker

Rudy wasnt in the wrong simply because he did not think about it, they were on the impact point, they never heard about any other people being teleported. Roxy and crew were almost the very first ones on the scene of the incident, and traveled to the demon continent straight from Asura, the news of what happened might not have even gotten to the demon continent much before Rudy and crew got to the port.

The way the Light Novel portrays this "family squabble" was a lot more balanced. Not entirely Rudeus fault. Not entirely Pauls fault. They both were wrong. The Anime cut a lot of inner-monologue and key bits of detail from Pauls side of the story, which really makes you lean to Rudeus defense. They both handled it poorly. Paul overestimated his son (rightly so, to be fair. Rudeus truly is a genius who is more competent than many adults). Rudeus didn't think enough about the overall situation and the larger impact. He was stuck in survival mode, even after hearing Man-God explain the situation to him about the Mana Disaster.

Alpha Beta

Well the father is like that as he knows rudeus would be able to manage himself. Their first fight showed that rudeus is much more powerful than himself. Throughout the fight, Rudeus was taking it lightly as none of the "thugs" were severely injured, whereas Paul, with full intention to kill and launching his strongest attack, could only destroy the panties. Also Ghislainne had told paul that it would be difficult even for her to beat Rudeus if he had enough distance at the start of the battle. Regarding helping, would you focus on helping the most capable person in your family (even though he is a child) or other members of your family?

And, you see, that's how I know that you don't have kids. Because answer is pretty fkin obvious, no matter how "talented" your kid is. Second thing, if you call almost-pass-out-drunk Paul as "full intent", then congratulations.

I cant see anywhere Rudy did wrong, how could he know everyone got teleported with him and in that circumstance, you cant expect anyone to not only help themselves to survive, but also help others.

I had to suspend my disbelief on this plot point. I never thought Paul should have discredited Rudy because Rudy was at the epicenter of the event, how was he suppose to know the extent that people were teleported. At the same time, I understand that Paul didn’t know that, but that piece of information should have deescalated the entire argument.

The references in this one episode are numerous and wide ranging: Goblin Slayer... Shimoneta... incredibly hilarious.

It's because from the moment Rudeus destroyed the upstairs of the house with a water ball Paul has placed him on a pedestal with expectations he could never hope to satisfy. "Rudy is exceptional... Rudy is so smart... Rudy can do anything..." combine all of this with Paul being drunk out of his mind and likely not even thinking about Rudy all that much himself for the last year and a half (because he's Rudy and he can take care of himself)... and the story Rudy told that was meant to put Paul at ease instead triggered him. To be fair to Paul, he's worried sick about Zenith, Lillia, and Aisha, and instead of searching for them has instead been rescuing Fittoans who have been enslaved as a result of the Teleportation Incident, but it doesn't excuse the fact that Paul forgot that Rudy is a 12-year old boy who just survived probably the second most dangerous continent in the entire world.

Phuck Paul man. One of the worst scumbags in the show. Hate him so much.

These openings really were something else. I mean you could probably write an entire story just off a random building in one of them.
