Kind of a spoiler to watch this out of context, since it ruins the surprise and humor of it.

It's not a music anime, and it was super unexpected at the time for the voice actor to come out and sing this song. This anime was one of the early animes that Kyoto Animation was the lead(solo) studio on and so you didn't have as much expectations you would now. So this scene in particular left a huge impact on anime fans at the time. It definitely wouldn't have the same type of influence and impact if it was released like it was today.

The irony is that this anime is actually NOT a music anime, so it has absolutely no reason to go as hard as it did with this song 🤣

Yes, there is one more song: "Lost my Music". Other than that as people already explained, it is not a music anime. I personally really enjoyed it. One of my favorites. But saying anything more would spoil some things you should probably not know yet if you ever want to watch it.

This song, this moment, is absolutely my favorite from the whole series. It isn't really a music anime, though. I think that's why this scene was so unexpected. honestly, original broadcast is better to get the FULL "what the actual fuck am i watching??" experience. just gotta give him the disclaimer beforehand that it WILL be confusing and that it IS intentional.

A part of me wants to just shut down this debate by saying that anything other than broadcast order for a first watch-through is sacrilege 😜 … but I will try to be reasonable and point out that people who watches it in broadcast order mostly loved it, while those who watched it in DVD order found usually said that they found it boring and anti-climactic!

If you like anime with good music You should check out the original FLCL. its super short, only six episodes (not including a sequel series that came out almost 20 years later) and the soundtrack is done entirely by 1 band that the director really liked. look up the song "last dinosaur" by "the pillows" for a preview of the OST. I think you'll love it

I think FLCL on Adult Swim back in the day is what really got me into like actual anime when I was a kid. Going back and watching it now I realized how good of a coming-of-age show it is. Top tier.
