No happy endings in Night City

Glad to hear you'll be doing Castlevania after Hellsing Ultimate. I've mentioned before but the Hellsing Ultimate episodes are long and make it the equivalent of around 20 episode anime. Castlevania at 32 episodes is the complete anime too, so it isn't that long in grand scheme of things when you consider most traditional animes tend to have around 24/25 episodes for a season like Reincarnated as a Slime you watched recently. Castlevania is 4-8-10-10 for it's season lengths. It probably won't feel that daunting if you do 2 episodes a week. Restricting patreon to say 10-15 episodes length seasons/series severely limits what animes can be recommended.

This episode is the reason I was excited when you picked up this show. I know its a short show but it is such an emotional journey that gives some intense feelings in the end.

REY

I loved your Edgerunners reations, they were amazing like the show itself

Ara Araragi

I could never listen to "I Really Want to Stay at Your House" the same way after this episode

dragonguard666

THE emotional song for Edgerunners fans. Instant download for me after I watched the show.

Daniel Griffiths

i can never hear that dam song and not feel happy and miserable all at the same time... rollercoaster from start to finish... fucking show lol

I've held on to this since I watched you react to the first episode; not sure if you remember but I commented this on that episode (my YouTube handle is @DJTagz09, also known as The Salty Hyena) that in the Cyberpunk subgenre there are rarely ever happy endings, at best bittersweet ones. Generally the genre tends to be dark, depressing and nihilistic in tone and things don't normally go well for the protagonist who at best can only hope to break even after their story ends, most notable examples would be the first Blade Runner movie where the main character completes their mission but something is hinted at what could possibly be their true nature, The Matrix trilogy (not including the recent fourth movie) with the deaths of many principle characters and how the third film ended, and RoboCop where although the titular character regains some of his humanity, his life is still forever altered and only one of a multitude of horrible things is changed in the world and it's impact is while significant, affects little of the overall world. From the start I kinda knew this was where the story was going, though it was still heartbreaking, but in that world it's unsurprising, like they say in the show "You're not remembered by how you live, but by how you die."

Miklar Sihn

This is the feeling that any Cyberpunk story should leave you with. That is the world of Cyberpunk.

Miklar Sihn

What makes this story special is that someone actually reaches their goal. Lucy manages to go to the moon... Now it is typical in that she really cant be happy there.

Miklar Sihn

Adam Smasher is quite interesting. He started off as a mercenary/runner and a psychopath. He only took jobs that allowed him to have tons of collateral damage without it reducing his paycheck. This led to him taking a rpg during a mission. His body was basically destroyed. Arasaka saved him by turning him into a full-borg. Basically all he had left was a brain and it is a question whether he still has that. Since then he has been working for Arasaka as their boogeyman. He still enjoys collateral damage, as can be seen by his unwillingness to let Lucy and Falco go. Now for the question of why he isnt a raging Cyber-Psycho, there are 2 theories, both very interesting. One is that Cyberware decreases your tolerance for irritation and your ability to control yourself. So if it makes someone without Cyberware kinda irritated if you stand near someone that smells a bit of sweat, then someone with a ton of Cyberware might straight up go into a murderous rampage over that. If this theory is true, then Adam Smasher being a psychopath who basically doesnt hold back his feelings and who doesnt really feel all that many emotions basically makes him immune to Cyber-Psychosis. The other, which the show does a lot to support, is that there are several ways to be a Cyber-Psycho. So it suggests that his high evaluation of himself and his love of murder are both signs of him being a raging Cyber-Psycho, he just happens to be a high-functioning Cyber-Psycho.

If you read this, hellsing ultimate story kinda start on ep 3, ep1-2 is a redo of original story kinda rushed

MAYBE

I fully felt the emotions of this show for like 3 whole days after i watched the ending. The song from the ending (I really wanna stay at your house) still makes me think back on this ending.

Dawe

Devilman crybabay would be good replacement after Castlevania, has just 10 episodes of 25 minutes each

Miilk

This ending will never stop breaking me no matter how many times I see it.

TOMfoolery

You wouldn't believe the amount of people who bought the game just to be able to get revenge on Adam Smasher by killing him in-game xD

zombuster22

please watch Hellsing Dubbed!! much better than sub!

Inifus

If you want one more story for this series, you should check out the official video for the outro song, "Let You Down" - the music video contains a full short story set before Edgerunners revolving around the previous netrunner from Maine's crew. Once Edgerunners was out, CDPR released an update for the game and added in some content related to the show. You can find a braindance containing the opening scene of the show that says it was a cautionary tale that David Martinez failed to heed, starting a mission that puts you in contact with Falco and gets you David's jacket. Near where the fight with Smasher took place, you can find Becca's shotgun where it fell into some bushes and claim it as your own. You can locate and visit the apartment that Becca and Pilar lived in... the list goes on.

Strang

A word of warning for Hellsing ultimate. It's a show that was very clearly made for fans of the original material, and this shows especially in the first few episodes. It can be very confusing watch if you're not familiar with the series, since it recaps the early story at breakneck speed.

AttackRunRepeat

This episode kills my fav character, Becca and give me my favorite line by Adam Smasher "Who the fuck are you?"

Martin Vaclavik

welcome to anime, we dont do happy endings here too often x) also... "aint no happy ending in night city" was never more true than this

Sefron Zilf

the song... THE DAMN SONG

Kevin Williams

I never saw the poll and still can't see the poll. Edit: Found the poll =)

Iron_claw

This anime the only way I can explain it the only way is that it's like a rollercoaster ride With so many up's and Downs twist and turns and it's going so fast and then you get off and you're throwing up and you're on the ground and somebody starts kicking the shit out of you and takes you over They're knee and snap your spine And then snaps your neck that is the Only way I can explain this anime It's so fucking good I can't even explain In any more detail than that that's just how it feels

Nathan S.

Cyberpunk 2077 game has the famous Afterlife bar. All those who died and made a name of them in NC (night city) get a drink after them. Here's to the 'David Martinez' , a true legend.

Tyler Zeringue

Would be fun to watch the abridged version of Hellsing Ultimate.

Abiyah

Btw if you decide to rewatch this show it becomes 3x more emotional

Rey

Perhaps after he's done with it first, it would be yeah

Jacob

sadly there will probably never be a season 2, studio trigger (unless I'm forgetting some show) never really make extra seasons. the but hey there is always the game and no matter what people said at launch its been fixed up a lot and has an insane story.

Chmuurkaa

That's me lmao. Instantly scored almost 50h in 3 days in that game. Remember first time when I got 'I Really Wanna Stay At Your House' play in the radio... I completely froze and could barely even blink

Tico Machi

A little bit of information you may be interested in... That Adam Smasher character is in the game as well (which takes place after the show)

kiwi

op and ed reaction when?

Jaheem Finnie

Adam Smasher actually is a cyberpsycho but a special one. He's considered a high functioning cyberpsycho who keeps it under control and uses it as a weapon as it's his job. This was confirmed by the creator Maximum Mike (Mike Pondsmith) on Reddit.

NikoCat11

Both Castlevania and Hellsing are kinda western, so they are, in a way, pretty much different from normal "anime", if that makes sense. Having said that, I don't recommend watching those right now as they will take a long time to finish and there's a bunch o gems to watch (if you want to know more anime). I'm not saying that they're not good though, I just don't think they are good recommendations to startes now. But it's just my opinion :)

NikoCat11

Oh and about Cyberpunk, you'll never listen to this song like before again LOL *cry*

Henry

And now you can never listen to the song which was playing in the background in the last part “I Really Want to Stay At Your House” by Rosa Walton, without getting emotional

Metal

Just why Rebecca? 😭

Odinn_AEsir

I seem to be the only one who loves the song and jam out to it. never got sad listening to it. I think rebecca's death hit me the hardest.

kiwi

Every goddamn time. Even though we knew he was gonna die, had our guard up, and yet this show still rips your heart right out of your chest and takes a big fat shit on it.

D3THL0CKE

I was telling myself "I'm not watching anymore if Rebecca dies." I didn't expect her to die at the tense climax of the last episode.

2023-07-14 12:36:41 The ending of Edgerunners really is the epitome of Cyberpunk 2077 in a nutshell. There are no happy endings if you're a glory seeker. The mercs of Night City live fast and die young.

My new year's resolution was to get through that song without tearing up. Still working on that.
